White Nights Are Upon Us

Until about mid-July, this is as dark as it will get here on the 61st northern latitude. I shot these a couple of hours ago at midnight.

That mast in the distance is the tallest structure in the country. It's on the tallest point of the esker about 223 meters abole sea level. The lake is about 81 m above sea level. The tower itself is 327 m tall. I made a post about it with some pictures taken of it with a teleobjective a couple of months ago.

This pub on a boat has been open for since last Monday. Today, it has been mostly rainy but next week should be sunny and warm, about 23-25 C.

Easing the corona restrictions was a godsend to all these restaurants.

Your not much farther north than we are at 60.55 north for Kenai. But your temps are a bit warmer than ours. 18-22C with 20C/68F being the most comfortable temperature for me, when we get in the 70's it just seems way to hot. I love all the pictures, and how the Business have some mood lighting going on. Very nice location with the water the boats, the bars, and that nice brick walk way. Here in Alaska we are not quite old enough of a location to have many nice areas like that, although we do have some nice restaurants.

Lahti (80 km to the north of the south coast) is warmer than Kenai (south coast of Alaska).

Our climate is like this:

This is Kenai:

The harbor area used to have factories and a railway station built in the late 19th century. The railway station was turned into a warehouse in the 1930s when the current railway station was built two kilometers to the north near the city center. The harbor area used to be an industrial area until the 1980s when it was landscaped. In 2006, the concert hall was built. That's the wooden building inside the large glass box that you see in the background in one of the last photos.

The pub on a boat was closed when I took the picture. Normally, it would've been open until at least midnight. But because of the corona situation they had to close at 11 pm.

Lands of extremes, I think that is what makes northern life so interesting and varied. I another 80 to 100 years I am sure that parts of Alaska will develop a style that shows the natural beauty and the man-made beauty of city, small town life, (Character).
