At 9 PM The Steam Whistle Blows

I was standing in the rain in Vancouver's Gas Town district waiting for the steam-powered clock to blow its whistle. I had my shot all planned out... the metal posts & chain for a foreground, the reflections off the wet cobblestones, and steam pouring out of the clock. The problem was these other photographers. They had waited as long as me and they weren't about to move, so I decided to "feature" them in the shot.

This is my entry for Deranged Photography Contest, Night Theme, in the Pro tier.

Want to hear the clock? Check out the video I found on Youtube.

A superb night shot @keithboone I reckon those two photographers are in exactly the right spot to provide the perfect composition.

I enjoyed listening to the sound of the clock too.

Thank you, Trudee! I think next time I'm there I will have a make the shot more about the clock.

Great photo, so many points of interest.

All the things you mentioned of course, but also the row of street lamps with the bright light clusters gave it some happy glow.

Oh, what a fabulous capture, Keith. I love this clock and they just don't make them like that anymore! You have captured the essence of that magical moment, really making this image stand out. You were really in the right place at the right time, clearing your awesome planning.

I really love the touch of steam you captured and the reflections from the rain. You really have such a trained eye for detail.

Thank you, Denise. I think I would do it differently next time. This is not actually a picture of the clock, it's more a picture about the clock, or about the scene surrounding the clock. I have no idea if that's good or bad but now I think I'l like to actually see the silly clock... if you know what I mean. :-)

I could tell it was about the clock because if it were a picture of a clock, you would have forced my eyes to see it and only it. :) You are sneaky that way.

The clock is cool. Get out and grab another shot. Ask for rain. I loved the rain that night.

Come on, man! You are retired! No time like the present to go mix with 675,218 of your best friends.

Ah... you've been googling I see... That's the population of the downtown core or something. The real population is 2.5 million people and they all want to sneeze on me. No thanks, I'm staying here on the island for now where we are officially clear of the virus!

Haha! I sure didn't pull that one out! Google and I are besties - and yes! It is downtown as I know you would be able to photograph it from the burbs.

Are you kidding? If I had a Victoria Island right now, I'd be hiding out in it. My shore house isn't even worthy. the area has one of the highest rates of COVID in the area.

Beach crowd, dang them!

Are you tired of the madness yet? I'm worried the border will be re-opened too soon. No offence, but all you Americans can stay on your own side of the border for just a little while longer. A recent story in the news tells of some people from Texas who are out on a road trip. They managed to cross the border from Montana to Alberta by claiming they were on the way to Alaska. Later on they turned up in Banff, no masks, and telling people they were just having a little vacation and not planning to go to Alaska. They were eventually tracked down to a campground where they've been told they must now isolate for 14 days. Unbelievable... At least here on Vancouver Island, the ferries from Washington are shut down. Everybody stay home please! (Including people from the city of Vancouver!)

OMG. What disrespectful jerks. And not even in their own country? Who has the gall to push over to another country and spread their cooties?

Honestly, I would be putting them in jail for their two-week isolation. It is stories like these that make me dislike Americans. Sorry. This is sort of where the ugly American comes from.

Not that it doesn't happen from other nationalities, but, as an American, I am ashamed that we have people that are that selfish. Sorry. I just want everyone to isolate within their own borders so that we can clean this thing up.

Some people just feel entitled I guess. The best part is, the campground they've been restricted to had to assign a full-time assistant to this group of people... so now they have their own nanny/personal shopper running errands and bringing them food and beer and supplies for two weeks! It's not an isolated event either. This is being called the "Alaska Loophole" and cars with plates from California, Texas and New York are showing up in our national parks. I can't even go there myself but these people found the loophole.
