From Si Phraya Pier to Small Market (Talad Noi), เดินเที่ยวตลาดน้อย

This is a second part of my tour of Chinatown with my old friend whereby we first visited the oldest banking building in Thailand. (You could browse the post here.) This whole day tour made us explored the old Chinese community along Chao Phraya River which huddled along narrow backstreets leading to Chinatown. It was quite an adventure for us as we had to keep asking local residents whether we could reach Chinatown through these very dim and narrow alleys.

The boat trip gave us a chance to enjoy the river scenery and breathe fresh air. The small Si Phraya Pier sits next to the Portuguese embassy; the exit has a nice shade from the big trees in the embassy garden. An old ceramic tableau hand-made in Portugal hangs quietly on the wall.

The weather was just right for our walking expedition and the lightning was very favourable for photography. I have become very dependent on my old iPhone 6SPlus thought I had drop it many times; the protective film had been changed three times in six months. My small pocket camera, a Canon IXus, had been tossed in the basket for ages. The edit function on iPhone is very easy to manage and the uploading of photos is very fast. However, my photos could be improved if I had a proper camera with nice lens. Blogging has made photography my main hobby which continues to bring me a sense of joy and wonderful discovery about my own country.

The Portuguese embassy is opposite a very interesting company which makes large size brass statues, fountains and animal models. It was incredible seeing these very large and heavy statues.

I did wonder who would buy these heavy and expensive statues. The buyers would need lots of space for displaying them nicely too. I would have to pluck up my courage and venture into this office with my questions.

เมื่อสัปดาห์ก่อนเรากับเพื่อนเก่านัดไปเดินเที่ยว ที่แถวสี่พระยาและเดินเลาะตามถนน และตามตรอกแคบๆที่เป็นย่านของคนจีนสมัยก่อนที่ข้ามน้ำข้ามทะเล มาปักรกรากในเมืองไทย แถวนั้นเรียกว่าตลาดน้อย เป็นแหล่งที่มีสถานที่เก่าแก่น่าสนใจหลายแห่ง เราก็ขึ้นเรือด่วนที่ท่าน้ำสี่พระยา ออกมาก็เจอสถานฑูตโปรตุเกสที่มีต้นไม้ร่มรื่นมาก ตรงข้ามมีบริษัทที่ทำรูปหล่อทองเหลืองขนาดใหญ่ที่น่าทึ่งมาก เราสงสัยว่าใครจะมาซื้อรูปหล่อขนาดใหญ่ที่มีราคาแพง แถมยังต้องใช้พื้นที่มากด้วยในการวางแสดงให้ดูสวยงาม เราอยากได้นํ้าพุมาตั้งในสวนสักอัน

A few minutes stroll further along the quiet street, we found a square with a roundabout. There were many motorbikes parking around this square which has several fast food stalls and convenient stores. The steel art work in the middle of the roundabout caught my attention. It looked like a steel dragon but it turned out to be something very unexpected.

I had a good laugh looking at this very funny and creative used of cooking utensils for making the steel dragon.

เราเดินตามถนนเงียบเหงาเส้นนี้ไปอีกประมาณห้านาที ก็เจอพื้นที่เหมือนลานจอดรถกว้างๆที่มีวงเวียนอยู่ตรงกลาง แถวนั้นมีรถมอเตอร์ไซด์จอดเต็มพื้นที่ รอบๆมีร้านขายอาหารตามสั่งและขนมไทยๆ และมีร้านขายของชำและร้านกาแฟด้วย เรามองไปที่กลางวงเวียนก็เห็นรูปร่างโครงเหล็กแปลกๆ พอดูดีๆเราก็ต้องหัวเราะออกมา เพราะเขาเอาช้อนและเครื่องมือในครัวมาสร้างเป็นมังกรเหล็ก ตลกและแปลกดีจริง คนทำนี่มีความคิดสร้างสรรค์และ อารมณ์ขันมากทีเดียว

This area is called Talad Noi or Small Market as there used to be a wet-market serving the Chinese community in the old days. Nowadays, there are newly built townhouses along the narrow street while the old shop-houses in the alleys remain the same. Some of the oldest houses, Chinese shrine and mansion could be found deeper along the alley. We were quite famished by our walking exercise, so we started looking around for some food or snacks. The choices of street food around the square were impressive and we started with the tasting of traditional Thai dessert.

เรากับเพื่อนเริ่มหิวนิดหน่อยหลังจากเดินออกกำลังกาย มาตามถนนตั้งสิบนาที พวกเราเริ่มมองเห็นอาหารและขนมไทยๆที่แม่ค้ากำลังเตรียมขายกัน เราก็เลยต้องทดสอบของกินแถวนั้น โดนเริ่มจากกล้วยเชื่อมร้อนๆที่พึ่งเอาขึ้นจากเตา มันอร่อยมากจนเราต้องสั่งอาหารมาทดสอบด้วย พวกเราตัดสินใจถูกที่นั่งกินอาหารกลางวันที่นั่น แต่เราลืมถ่ายรูปอาหารที่เราสั่งมา คนขายใจดีมากและทำอาหารอย่างตั้งใจ คนแถวนั้นเขารู้จักกันหมด และอยู่กันเหมือนในหมู่บ้านเดียวกัน ชุมชนตลาดน้อยมีอะไรที่น่าสนใจหลายอย่าง มีบ้านและวัดจีนโบราณที่มีอายุหลายร้อยปี และบ้านของเจ้าสัวจีนที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในกรุงเทพ ร้านขายอาหารที่นี่มีหลายร้านมากที่เราอยากกลับไปทดสอบฝีมือแม่ครัวพ่อครัวที่นั่น

One of the vendors had a special pet which she put him out in the sunshine in front of her good stall. This seemed to be a very effective way to attract our attention. I rarely saw this big lizard in orange colour; he was very calm and peaceful.

แม่ค้าร้านหนึ่งเท่มาก เขาเอากิ้งก่าออกมาตากแดด นี่เป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงราคาแพงและหาดูยากมาก เราไม่เคยเห็นกิ้งก่าสีส้มมาก่อน เราก็เดินถ่ายรูปร้านอาหารสองสามร้าน ดูแล้วน่ากินหลายอย่าง

We did enjoy our early lunch at this Small Market. The vendors were very kind and polite; I was quite impressed by their earnest service. We promised them that we would be back there again soon. After refueling, we were ready for our long walk through all labyrinth of narrow alleys ahead of us.
