First Light at Glen Helen Gorge

First light hitting the cliffs at Glen Helen Gorge on the Finke River. It is surprisingly chilly out there in the mornings before the sun has risen. Thought to be perhaps the oldest identifiable river still seasonally flowing in the world it predates the mountains around it which formed in an uplift 300-400 million years ago. The gorge is located in the West MacDonnell National Park or Tjoritja in the Northern Territory of Australia.

I have been going internally berserk for the last 30 minutes, CV lockdown announced here in SA and G-dog ain't happy...And then I see this and I feel a little more settled...Isn't Australia beautiful...Best country in the world Robert. As always, thanks for the injection of normality and beauty in the CV world of ours.

It is beautiful out there. I must say my respect for Australia has gone down a notch with how they have essentially abandoned overseas citizens (against all human rights charters we have ratified).

I might become Canadian yet.

I agree with you especially since at 12pm yesterday they announced a strict lockdown here which began at midnight of the same day. It's all a bit draconian. Having said that, the second wave that sparked the lockdown came from a quarantine hotel from returned Australians from overseas.

Canada looks nice. :)

How does one identify how old a river is?

The colours that first light brings out :O

You cant tell how old the river is but you can date the mountains around looking at the radioisotope decay of the rocks. In the case of the Finke river there are meanderings which predate the uplift of the mountains (you can tell if they were formed by the run off from the existing mountains). So we know its older than the mountains around it; but not sure how much older.

That's pretty cool. And on asking Rainbow Snake, that would also be pretty cool though I feel like I might get eaten XD

Australia is my dream location, and seeing shots like this make me want to visit even, I'm 45 now, but I am hoping I'll be going for my 50th Birthday, so just have to start saving for my dream visit.
