Komainu or lion-dog statues can be found at the entrance of Shinto shrines in Japan as well as other sacred grounds. They are the guardians. At first glance they can look rather frightening and the thought does come to mind, “did these type of animals actually exist?” Your guess is as god as mine. But interestingly, these guardian statues can be found in China (where they are called foo dogs),India and Korea, where many believe they originated. Ko is actually short for Korean and Komainu, short for Korean dog. In my mind, they are much like gargoyles, set in place to scare away evil spirits.

Location: Sano, Tochigi, Japan: Mikamo

Hmm I never made the connection with gargoyles, but you're right, it is kind of the same purpose. Interesting. Now that makes me curious about the origin of gargoyles.

Great photo, buddy. My wife's hometown is not far from Sano, so I have been there several times.

Yeah the thought just came to mind as I wrote it. They serve the same purpose as gargoyles and are kinda scary! Hmmm I should mint this but let me wait for some more good snaps.

Sano is nice. I pass it every day. If you know of any cool spots for a shot let me know.
