Food Photography Session: Indonesian Tofu Salad with Soy Sauce

B3304F35-8132-4EAC-9E7E-D06F8C707B03.jpeg

We named this salad 'Fried Tofu' (in Indonesian: 'Tahu Goreng'). Because this dish is a salad, of course how to make it very easy. I just need to prepare the sauce for the dressing and some complementary ingredients for the topping.

Let's follow me to prepare some ingredients into a serving of delicious Tofu Salad!

Hope you guys enjoy my food photography this time.

THE INGREDIENTS

B5212FCC-7595-4D4E-B2FE-EE0722BF93E4.jpeg

The main ingredients are fried tofu and chopped cabbages. Then, sprinkled with chopped celery leaves.

The type of tofu used in this dish is yellow tofu. The texture is more solid than white tofu in general. But you can still use white tofu for sure if you have no yellow tofu.

The cooking method for tofu is deep-frying. It creates an authentic taste and the taste will be completely different when the tofu is roasted. But once again, it doesn't matter if you want to roast the tofu to avoid using too much oil.

It's just that if you want to get an authentic, authentic taste, you have to fry the tofu.

Next, for cabbages, before chopped, we have to dip the cabbages in boiling water so that the taste doesn't become disgusting.

An important tip, use the young cabbages to get a fresh and slightly sweet taste. Also, the texture is still crunchy. Meanwhile, old cabbages with wilted texture and taste are not fresh and have a slightly unpleasant aroma.

So, make sure you use young cabbages, then dip them in boiling water.

After dipping it in boiling water for a while, then chop the cabbages thinly and lengthwise.

Next, let's talk about the sauce. The ingredients are soy sauce, green small chili, garlic, and salt. Add only a little red chili and brown sugar.

The taste of this sauce is sweet and spicy, a Javanese favorite taste. This is also a recipe from my mother, who still carries out the original Javanese recipe to this day.

Then, let's look at the ingredients for topping. Even though it looks like only small and simple ingredients, they are one of the characteristics that create an authentic taste.

Fried red onion.

Red Crackers.

Fried red onion, and red crackers. So the two ingredients are sprinkled at the final stage of serving after the soy sauce is poured on the tofu and vegetables.

TIME FOR SERVING!

Add fried tofu and chopped cabbages on a salad plate. Try to get a balanced portion of tofu and cabbages.

Then pour soy sauce. As usual, I do it neatly. Pour little by little and patiently. Don't let soy sauce drown the cabbage and tofu.

We also have to pay attention to the portion of soy sauce, don't overdo it. Well, it tastes spicy too. So for those of you who are not familiar with spicy taste, it's best not to pour too much of this sauce if you don't want to end up going to the toilet. Lol.

LET'S SPRINGKLED SALAD WITH FUN THINGS!

B88CAF22-6F6C-4441-9E60-E0474DE7344F.jpeg

Sprinkled something is certainly a fun thing. Is not it? So the final stage of serving this tofu salad is sprinkling chopped celery, fried red onion, and red cracker.

F6D88FB8-CAF5-4F7B-93BA-98146AD4028B.jpeg

Well, the three topping ingredients are inseparable from this dish. They must exist and complete the dish, like a spark of love in your happy heart. Oh, yes!

THE RESULTS

B3304F35-8132-4EAC-9E7E-D06F8C707B03.jpeg

A plate of fresh salad is ready to give a sweet, savory, and spicy surprise as an after-taste. It will make you excited, and want to sip the sauce to the last drop.

The crunchy texture of the young cabbages makes you addicted to eating on this salad, then, of course, the spicy sauce feels sexy.

SERVE WITH WARM RICE!

Not enough without rice? Alright, we can serve this salad with warm rice. It will bring pleasure to your dining plate, for sure! The combination of warm rice with soy sauce creates a unique story for your tongue.

When I was little, I even had to taste a few spoonfuls of rice and soy sauce before I went to bed so I could sleep well!

7A74DA06-A8FC-4BE7-A8CE-5A5BFE01B94A.jpeg

Especially with the sprinkling of fried onions, it's like my childhood memories which always carry a delicious fragrance in my days.

How about you? Have you ever seen a salad like this, maybe when you visited Asian countries? Or do you even have a traditional recipe that is similar to mine?

I always have a light issue in our apartment, and I can't wait for summer to arrive so that I can start taking these food pictures outside again.. Makes such a difference, but yours rock! I love that addition of pieces of red crackers on top...bringing a nice crisp on the salad.
And it is so true...fried tofu taste much much better than roasted...now that's a choice of someone willing less oil...but again...fried is just another taste!

Your plating is star Michelin level my friend...
👍👍👍

It is a very curious salad, but as I always say you need to learn so many things in life. I have lived in many countries and I have eaten different kind of dishes, and I love asian food, but my favorite is Italian. Beautiful colours and agree with you: rice and soja is gorgious.. When I was little I always ate milk with sugar and coconuts candies.
