El sonido de la ansiedad: 3 canciones industriales | The sound of anxiety: 3 industrial songs

Hace un par de semanas, más o menos. Hice una publicación sobre tres canciones que me resultaban relajantes, que me traen paz, porque es el tipo de música que más suelo disfrutar. Sin embargo, tengo otras facetas entre mis gustos musicales, y de vez en cuando me gusta la música abrasiva y pesada, no por nada fui criado escuchando metal, algo de ese gusto debe quedarme. Por lo que también he explorado muchos géneros que se concentran en el ruido, en la agresividad, en temas relacionados a la muerte, el dolor y demás. Cualquiera que esté acostumbrado a escuchar metal entenderá más o menos por donde voy. Sin embargo, hoy no les mostraré canciones de metal, les mostraré canciones de géneros derivados del "Industrial", un género que honestamente me cuesta mucho describir, pero que definitivamente tiene algunas de las canciones más inquietantes y terribles que existen. Así que, les daré una pequeña probada de este particular sabor con 3 canciones.

A couple of weeks ago, more or less. I made a post about three songs that I found relaxing, that bring me peace, because that's the kind of music I usually enjoy the most. However, I have other facets to my musical tastes, and from time to time I like abrasive and heavy music, not for nothing was I raised listening to metal, some of that taste must stay with me. So I have also explored many genres that focus on noise, aggressiveness, themes related to death, pain and so on. Anyone who is used to listening to metal will more or less understand where I'm going. However, today I will not show you metal songs, I will show you songs from genres derived from "Industrial", a genre that I honestly have a hard time describing, but that definitely has some of the most disturbing and terrible songs out there. So, I'll give you a little taste of this particular flavor with 3 songs.

Antes de entrar de lleno con las canciones, quisiera intentar describir el sonido de la música industrial. La verdad es que es algo que me resulta muy complicado y las definiciones que pueden encontrar en internet no ayudan mucho.

El sonido del industrial, aunque depende mucho de la vertiente, es un sonido muy experimental centrado más que todo en la música electrónica. Y aunque es muy común ver que la música industrial toque temas controversiales o transgresores, la verdad es que musicalmente no se corresponde a muchos patrones más allá de la tendencia de subvertir el sonido a través de las texturas, el Industrial suele tener un sonido extraño, metálico y disonante, pero sin corresponderse a una rítmica o a una melodía. Su sonido puede recordar al del Krautrock y del Noise, dependiendo del artista o banda, sin embargo, muchos proyectos de Industrial suelen apoyarse a través de hacer collages con sonidos. El estilo tan errático e impredecible del Industrial y su fijación por los temas controversiales, hace que el Industrial sea, a mi parecer, uno de los géneros musicales con más potencial de sonar terroríficos.

Before going into the songs, I would like to try to describe the sound of industrial music. The truth is that it is something that I find very complicated and the definitions that can be found on the internet do not help much.

The sound of industrial music, although it depends a lot on the aspect, is a very experimental sound focused mostly on electronic music. And although it is very common to see that industrial music plays controversial or transgressive themes, the truth is that musically it does not correspond to many patterns beyond the tendency to subvert the sound through textures, the Industrial usually has a strange, metallic and dissonant sound, but without corresponding to a rhythmic or a melody. Its sound can be reminiscent of Krautrock and Noise, depending on the artist or band, however, many Industrial projects often rely on sound collage. Industrial's erratic and unpredictable style and its fixation on controversial topics, makes Industrial, in my opinion, one of the most potentially terrifying sounding genres of music.

Comencemos con la que probablemente sea la canción más fácil de escuchar de esta lista (si esta no te resulta escuchable, te espera un camino tortuoso), incluso a pesar de pertenecer a una vertiente del Industrial llamada Death Industrial que se caracteriza por ser más pesada, ruidosa y agresiva que la música Industrial en general. Pharmakon es una artista bastante fuerte cuya música está plagada con el tema del dolor y el sufrimiento en general. Muchas de sus canciones no van de una temática específica más allá de retratar el dolor de forma sonora. Por lo que esta canción es el ejemplo perfecto, una canción titulada literalmente "Dolor". A través de texturas electrónicas y de un sonido metálico y vibrante que pisa atronando, Pharmakon grita con todas sus fuerzas al micrófono, rasgando su voz mientras las atmósferas vibrantes van haciendo ecos y creando una cacofonía que te absorbe y envuelve, y su envolvimiento no es agradable. Yendo al final de la canción, los gritos desaparecen y comienzan a aparecer voces fantasmales creando un coro infernal. Si hay una canción que retrate perfectamente el estilo de Pharmakon, definitivamente es esta.

Let's start with what is probably the easiest song to listen to on this list (if you don't find this one listenable, you're in for a torturous ride), even though it belongs to a strand of Industrial called Death Industrial which is characterized by being heavier, louder and more aggressive than Industrial music in general. Pharmakon is a pretty strong artist whose music is plagued with the theme of pain and suffering in general. Many of his songs don't go for a specific theme beyond portraying pain sonically. So this song is the perfect example, a song literally titled "Pain". Through electronic textures and a metallic and vibrant sound that stomps thunderously, Pharmakon screams with all his might into the microphone, tearing his voice while the vibrant atmospheres are echoing and creating a cacophony that absorbs and envelops you, and its envelopment is not pleasant. Going to the end of the song, the screams disappear and ghostly voices begin to appear creating a hellish chorus. If there is a song that perfectly portrays Pharmakon's style, this is definitely it.

De entre los grupos y proyectos más representativos del género Industrial, Throbbing Gristle es definitivamente uno de los más importantes. Habiéndose hechos tan conocidos gracias a su disco "20 Jazz Funk Greats", cuya portada y título prometían algo ameno y fácil de escuchar, para resultar ser un conjunto de canciones muy experimentales, erráticas y metálicas. Sin embargo, su máximo potencial (a mi parecer) ya había sido alcanzado con su disco anterior: "D.o.A: The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle", el cuál contiene esta canción, titulada "Hamburger Lady", una canción lenta pero que pisa fuerte. Con un golpe atronador constante, sonidos atmosféricos distorsionados que suben y bajan, ruidos disonantes, sonidos como de sirenas y alarmas, motores, etc. Una orquesta de sonidos extraños acompañados por una voz temblorosa, robótica y con ecos, describiéndonos a una mujer que se quemó todo el cuerpo a tal punto de quedar como carne de hamburguesa. No importa como lo veas, Hamburger Lady es una canción muy perturbadora.

Among the most representative groups and projects of the Industrial genre, Throbbing Gristle is definitely one of the most important. Having become so well known thanks to their album "20 Jazz Funk Greats", whose cover and title promised something pleasant and easy to listen to, to turn out to be a set of very experimental, erratic and metallic songs. However, their full potential (in my opinion) had already been reached with their previous album: "D.o.A: The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle", which contains this song, titled "Hamburger Lady", a slow but hard hitting song. With a constant thunderous beat, distorted atmospheric sounds that rise and fall, dissonant noises, sounds like sirens and alarms, engines, etc.. An orchestra of strange sounds accompanied by a trembling, robotic, echoing voice, describing a woman who has burned her entire body to the point of becoming hamburger meat. No matter how you look at it, Hamburger Lady is a very disturbing song.

Probablemente mi proyecto de Industrial favorito y definitivamente uno de los más extraños también, Nurse With Wound, grupo liderado por el músico Steve Stapleton y uno de los proyectos de Industrial con más trayectoria de todos. Es demasiado difícil encasillarlos, han hecho de todo cuando se trata de Industrial y derivados, desde la música más experimental y extraña, hasta música ambiental opresiva y negra. Esta canción en particular, pertenece al primer grupo, una canción de veinticuatro minutos (sí, 24 minutos), que podría hasta definirse como la antítesis de la música. Ladridos de perros en reversa, mujeres españolas hablando y quejándose, como en un call center. Sonidos de oficina, chillidos repentinos. Ruido metálico, golpes atronados, vibraciones extrañas. Casi nada en esta canción parece "musical" y precisamente por ello, es una especie de purgatorio auditivo.

Probably my favorite Industrial project and definitely one of the strangest as well, Nurse With Wound, a band led by musician Steve Stapleton and one of the longest running Industrial projects of all. It's too hard to pigeonhole them, they have done everything when it comes to Industrial and derivatives, from the most experimental and strange music, to oppressive and black ambient music. This song in particular, belongs to the first group, a twenty-four minutes song (yes, 24 minutes), that could even be defined as the antithesis of music. Barking dogs in reverse, Spanish women talking and complaining, like in a call center. Office sounds, sudden shrieks. Metallic noises, thunderous thumps, strange vibrations. Almost nothing in this song seems "musical" and precisely because of that, it is a kind of auditory purgatory (pun intended).
