Hoy vamos a hablar de uno de mis artistas favoritos del EDM, el cual aún mantiene el género vivo con sus vivas melodías, y sus beats enérgicos y etéreos.
Estoy hablando, como ya sabrán, de Porter Robinson, y su nuevo álbum: Nurture.

Hello, Hive community!
Today we are going to talk about one of my favourite artist of the EDM, who still keeps the genre alive with his lively melodies, his energic and ethereal beats.
I am talking, as you all know by now, about Porter Robinson, and his new album: Nurture.

Porter Robinson es un músico de Georgia, Estados Unidos, el cual se centra en los géneros del EDM: Electro-house, Electropop y el Synth-pop.

Porter se ganó renombre en la escena del EDM desde su disco "Worlds", publicado en 2014, el cual es uno de mis álbumes favoritos de la música electrónica.
Worlds es un disco que se caracteriza por su ambiente atmosférico y efímero, y sus temas existenciales y densos filosóficamente, ya que en este mayormente se trataba a las máquinas en un caso hipotético donde pudiesen sentir.

Sea of Voices es mi canción favorita de dicho álbum, y en ella se entiende todo lo que Porter quería expresar.

Porter Robinson is a musician from Georgia, United States, which focuses on the EDM genres: Electro-house, Electropop and Synth-pop.

Porter gained renown in the EDM scene since his album "Worlds", released in 2014, which is one of my favorite albums in electronic music.
Worlds is an album characterized by its atmospheric and ephemeral atmosphere, and its existential and philosophically dense themes, as this one mostly dealt with machines in a hypothetical case where they could feel.

"Sea of Voices" is my favorite song of that album, and in it you can understand everything Porter wanted to express.

Ahora, luego de siete años de silencio debido a muchos problemas emocionales, vuelve con un nuevo álbum que busca tratar la vida, la belleza de estarlo, y lo hermoso de la naturaleza y las cosas más simples. Un disco que me hizo sonreír la primera vez que lo escuché, y que me hizo recordar por qué amaba este género.

Now, after seven years of silence due a lot of emotional problems, he comes back with a new album that looks to talk about life, the beauty of being alive, and the beauty of nature and most simple things. A disc that made me smile the first time I listened it, and that made me remind why I loved this genre.

Luego de la breve introducción de Lifelike, el disco empieza con su single, y uno de sus mejores temas: Look at the Sky.
El track empieza haciéndonos sentir en casa. Se puede escuchar de fondo a Porter respirando, y dando click en la PC para empezar a grabar su voz.
Ese piano se volverá parte inicial de muchísimas canciones en el disco, junto con una guitarra acústica.

Esta canción trata del ciclo del arte. Robinson dijo en la descripción del vídeo oficial de la canción que tendemos a pensar que el arte es una actividad de creación solitaria, no obstante, los instrumentos usados en la grabación de este disco los inventó alguien más. La teoría musical necesaria para juntar esos sonidos fue creada por alguien más. Los programas que utilizó para grabar y mezclar los instrumentos los hizo alguien más.
Todo es un ciclo invisible indestructible que trata de cómo el arte existe por y para las personas, y cómo siempre será así.

Se notan las intenciones de Porter, y las representó fantástico; la canción tiene ese tono agridulce que te recuerda lo corto de la vida, pero también tiene ese beat animado para reafirmar que todo lo que hagas en ella sirve de algo. El arte crea arte, e inspira arte.
Algo que también veremos mucho a lo largo del álbum son las vocales andróginas de Robinson, dando una sensación de combinar el mundo electrónico con la naturaleza del ser vivo.

After the brief introduction of Lifelike, the album starts with their single, and one of their best tracks: Look at the Sky.
The track starts off by making us feel at home. Porter can be heard in the background breathing, and clicking on the PC to start recording his voice.
That piano will become an initial part of many, many songs on the album, along with an acoustic guitar.

This song is about the art cycle. Robinson said in the description of the song's official video that we tend to think of art as a solitary creative activity, yet the instruments used in the recording of this album were invented by someone else. The music theory needed to put those sounds together was created by someone else. The programs used to record and mix the instruments were made by someone else.
It's all an indestructible invisible cycle about how art exists by and for people, and how it always will.

Porter's intentions are noticeable, and he represented them fantastically; the song has that bittersweet tone that reminds you how short life is, but it also has that upbeat beat to reaffirm that whatever you do in it serves a purpose. Art creates art, and inspires art.
Something we'll also see a lot of throughout the album is Robinson's androgynous vocals, giving a sense of combining the electronic world with the nature of being alive.

Esta clase de temas serán recurrentes en las canciones del disco, además de las referencias sonoras a todo lo que inspira a Porter en su música.
Por ejemplo, la introducción del disco "Lifelike" recuerda mucho a la banda sonora de "Undertale", un conocido video-juego RPG caracterizado por su gran OST.

These kinds of topics will be recurrent in the album's songs, in addition to the sonic references to everything that inspires Porter in his music.
For example, the album's intro "Lifelike" is very reminiscent of the soundtrack of "Undertale", a well-known RPG video game characterized by its great OST.

Además de esto, en muchas canciones hay referencias a que esto está siendo grabado, rompiendo la cuarta pared y devolviéndonos a la realidad. Un ejemplo de esto es el glitch que hay en "Wind Tempos" a mitad de canción. Esta clase de detalles nos hacen conscientes de que esto no fue algo producido por miles de personas, sino la historia que Porter quería contar, hecha por él mismo.

Por cierto, el título de esta canción parece una referencia muy evidente a The Legend of Zelda, y al Wind Temple (Templo del Viento).

Beyond of that, in a lot of songs there are references of this album being recorded, breaking the fourth wall and taking us back in reality. An example of this is the glitch in "Wind Tempos" at the half of the song. This kind of details makes us conscious about this not being produced by thousands of persons, but by Porter, telling the story that he wanted to tell, made by himself.

By the way, the title of this song it looks like a refference pretty obvious of The Legend of Zelda, and the Wind Temple.

Este estilo de canciones hechas por Porter me dan vida.
Suelen ser mayormente instrumentales, y siempre son un crescendo al cual se la van sumando instrumentos para dar una sensación de profundidad sonora y ambientación tan espaciosos que me fascina. Aquí no hay un "break", que es la parte más enérgica de las canciones de música electrónica, sino que sencillamente sigue en línea recta hasta que entran las voces. Todo se calla excepto el piano, y este da paso al silencio y las voces, junto con ese ruido blanco del micrófono.

Este ruido me parece una parte importante de la canción, porque recuerda al viento, el cual nunca deja de soplar.

Aquí se puede ver la habilidad increíble que tiene Robinson a la hora de mezclar sonidos e instrumentos para crear una atmósfera. Y es que la mayoría de sus canciones exudan eso: una atmósfera.

This Porter's style of songs give me life.
They tend to be mostly instrumental, and are always a crescendo to which instruments are added to give a sense of sonic depth and ambience so spacious that it fascinates me. There is no "break" here, which is the most energetic part of electronic music songs, but simply continues in a straight line until the vocals come in. Everything goes quiet except the piano, and this gives way to silence and vocals, along with that white noise from the microphone.

This noise seems to me an important part of the song, because it reminds me of the wind, which never stops blowing.

Here you can see the incredible hability of Porter when he has to mix sounds and instruments to create an atmosphere. And it's that the mayority of his songs exude that: an atmosphere.

Esta canción me hizo llorar.
Porter busca retratar un sentimiento muy específico, y es el tenerle miedo a la muerte. Pero, no por nada, sino por amar tanto a alguien que tienes miedo de morir y no poder verla nunca más.

Esta es una de las canciones más hermosas que he escuchado jamás, y me hace recordar las razones de por qué estoy vivo, y por qué seres que amo lo están.

Luego de haber pasado por momentos muy oscuros en mi vida, muchas personas me anclaron a seguir en ella. Me hicieron esforzarme por encontrar mis motivos, y seguir en esta larga carretera que llaman vida por ellos, por ella, y por todos.

This song made me cry.
Porter seeks to portray a very specific feeling, and that is being afraid of death. But, not for anything, but for loving someone so much that you are afraid of dying and never being able to see them again.

This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and it reminds me of the reasons why I am alive, and why people I love are alive.

After going through some very dark times in my life, many people anchored me to stay in it. They made me strive to find my reasons, and continue on this long road they call life for them, for her, and for everyone.

Nurture es una celebración constante de estar vivo, y de todo lo que eso conlleva. No puedo hablar de muchas de estas canciones sin tener escalofríos, y su felicidad y alegría despreocupadas me recuerdan el porqué quiero seguir en este mundo. Y eso es algo que no puedo ignorar.

Nurture is a constant celebration of being alive, and all that comes with it. I can't talk about many of these songs without getting chills, and their carefree happiness and joy remind me why I want to stay in this world. And that's something I can't ignore.
