Howdy, Hivers. On many occasions I have covered several bands with my electric bass and as a bass player, I have been asked which are the best bass players or the best known of the bands to which I do these reviews and covers, in this was born the idea of also talk a little of the member of the bands that may be ignored, which are the bass players; but although it seems arrogant to say it and more by a bass player himself, the bass plays an extremely important role in any group for the harmonic and melodic importance it represents. At the beginning of the 80's a bassist used a very particular technique in Slap and Pop, hitting the bass strings with his thumb and plucking the other strings, this is “Mark King” a British musician, singer and bassist born in 1958 and was one of the most influential bassists of his time for his style and for his contribution with a new form of technique in bass performance. This bassist is mostly known for being the lead vocalist and bassist at Level 42.

En muchas ocasiones he realizado cover de diversas bandas con mi bajo eléctrico y como bajista, me han preguntado cuales son los mejores bajistas o los más conocidos de las bandas al cual les hago estas reseñas y covers, en esto nace la idea de también hablarles un poco del miembro de las bandas que tal vez sea ignorado, que son los bajistas; pero aunque parezca arrogante decirlo y más por un propio bajista, el bajo juega un rol sumamente importante en cualquier agrupación por la importancia armónica y melódica que representa. A principio de los 80´s un bajista uso una t5écnica muy particular en el Slap and Pop, golpeando las cuerdas del bajo con el dedo gordo y punteando las demás cuerdas, este es “Mark King” un músico, cantante y bajista británico nacido en 1958 y fue uno de los bajistas más influyentes de su época por su estilo y por su aporte con una nueva forma de técnica en ejecución del bajo. Este bajista es mayormente conocido por ser el vocalista principal y bajista en Level 42.
MUSICAL HISTORY
Mark King is a bassist who has a well-known trajectory for being the main voice of Level 42 and for also having collaborated with renowned bands such as: The Police, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Mark Knopfler and Elton John, although at the beginning of his life his desire was to be a drummer, he tells in his biography that when forming Level 42 they needed a bassist and despite being an excellent drummer he had to make the decision to play bass. But despite this, it did not stop him from being a consecrated bassist and contributing new styles in the execution of the bass, being recognized for his creativity. He is currently active with the band and also has his own line of amplifiers.
Mark King es un bajista que tiene una trayectoria bastante conocida por ser la voz principal de Level 42 y por también haber colaborado con bandas de alto renombre como: The Police, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Mark Knopfler y Elton John, aunque a principios de su vida su deseo era ser baterista, cuenta en su biografía que al formar Level 42 necesitaban un bajista y a pesar de ser un excelente baterista debió tomar la decisión de tocar el bajo. Pero a pesar de esto no le detuvo a ser un bajista consagrado y aportar nuevos estilos en la ejecución del bajo siendo éste reconocido por su creatividad. Actualmente se mantiene activo con la banda y además tiene su propia línea de amplificadores.
1. Techniques used by Mark King.
As I have commented in other posts, the technique of certain bassists that make them unique have given an incredible range of playing forms and Mark is one of them, using the bass in the Slap and pop where he hits the neck strings with his thumb. tapping the others with the index and middle fingers, this style of playing provides a very funk style, quite striking also is a very good player while singing which is another of the enviable skills of many bassists.
Como he comentado en otros post, la técnica de ciertos bajistas que los hacen únicos han dado una gama increíble de formas de ejecución y Mark es uno de ellos, usando el bajo en el Slap and pop donde golpea las cuerdas del mástil con el dedo gordo punteando las demás con los dedos índice y medio, este estilo de tocar aportan un estilo muy funk, bastante llamativo además es muy buen ejecutante mientras canta que es otra de las habilidades envidiables de muchos bajistas.
