Rewriting history - Reescribiendo la historia
Today is October 12, the date on which Christopher Columbus is supposed to have arrived on the small island of Guanahaní in what is now known as the Bahamas and discovered America.
I say that it is supposed because I have already read so much about this that I have to question everything, the date for example; Apparently it came a day later, on October 13, but as in those days the number 13 was despised for being one of the bad luck names, the kings of Spain or their advisers decided that it was better to say that it was a 12 than it also coincided with the date of a saint, which is now irrelevant.
They taught me at school that the queen donated her jewels to cover the expenses of the expedition although now it is said that it is not true, it seems that the Spanish crown had to collect a good sum of money from the city of Palos de la Frontera, a small maritime town located in Huelva, Andalusia, as fines for smuggling and piracy, for which the municipality was ordered to dispose and supply two caravels (yes, two) for the Italian navigator to make his dream trip to the Indies. The Italian thing was also controversial for a long time but they finally agreed that Columbus was indeed born in Genoa.
I do not know if they paid attention but at the time I said two caravels although at the last minute they added one more although the reasons I do not know, the third and largest that became the flagship or captain was called "La Gallega" but it was renamed as "Santa Maria".
Columbus's idea of sailing west to get to the east was not original either, it was later discovered that Aristotle, who lived almost 2000 years before the adventurous navigator had written about it. Surely if you dig further you will find several others who said the same thing, many have been awarded the idea something like if Twitter had existed in ancient times.
Even the sighting is in doubt, according to reports the first to see land was Juan Rodriguez Bermejo, better known as Rodrigo de Triana, who became more famous for not having received the prize of ten thousand maravedis to the one who first saw land than the sighting itself. Indeed, the Admiral argued that from the location where the cabin boy was placed, he could not have seen the candles (they arrived at night) and that, on the contrary, it was he himself who first saw them.
What everyone agrees on is that no one had the slightest idea that they are working from a new continent and not from the Indies. (Something that remains true).
I don't know if anyone other than me cares about all this, it is like having been deceived for many years.
In recent times there have been discussions and resolutions as or more disconcerting, all over the world there is an anti-Columbus feeling, it seems we lost our freedom, our culture, our way of thinking and even our religion and the culprit is that man.
The truth is that I believe that many are taking it with whom they should not and I do not even believe that someone should be blamed for something that is not known. Nobody can know what would have happened if Spain first and other European countries later had not "colonized" America. I do not understand the accusation, the entire history of humanity is full of conquests, discoveries, wars. We are cruel and insensitive in certain situations, there are plenty of examples of this.
Historical events are never exactly as described because we write history ourselves and always the one who writes it is the one who wins.
If we leave Colón alone and dedicate ourselves to solving many other enormous problems that we have, we may do better and the story will be simpler or at least more joyful to tell.
Hoy es 12 de octubre, la fecha en que se supone llegó a la pequeña isla de Guanahaní en lo que hoy se conoce como Bahamas y descubrió América Cristóbal Colón.
Digo que se supone porque ya he leído tantas cosas sobre esto que todo lo tengo que poner en duda, la fecha por ejemplo; aparentemente llegó un día después, un 13 de octubre pero como en aquellos tiempos el número 13 era despreciado por ser una de las denominaciones de la mala suerte, los reyes de España o sus asesores, decidieron que era mejor decir que fue un día 12 que además coincidía con la fecha de un santo, no viene al caso ahora a cual.
Me enseñaron en la escuela que la reina donó sus joyas para solventar los gastos de la expedición aunque ahora se dice que no es cierto, parece ser que la corona española tenía por cobrar una buena suma de dinero a la ciudad de Palos de la Frontera, una pequeña población marítima ubicada en Huelva, Andalucía como multas por contrabando y piratería por lo que se conminó al municipio a disponer y aprovisionar dos carabelas (si, dos) para que el navegante italiano realizara su soñado viaje a las Indias. Lo de italiano también fue controversial durante mucho tiempo pero finalmente se pusieron de acuerdo en que Colón había nacido efectivamente en Génova.
No sé si prestaron atención pero en su momento dije dos carabelas aunque a último momento agregaron una más aunque los motivos no los conozco, la tercera y más grande que se convirtió en la nave insignia o capitana se llamaba “La Gallega” pero fue rebautizada como “Santa María”.
La idea de Colón de navegar hacia el occidente para llegar al oriente tampoco era original, se descubrió luego que Aristóteles, quien vivió casi 2000 años antes que el aventurero navegante había escrito sobre eso. Seguramente si escarban más encontrarán varios otros que dijeron lo mismo, muchos se han adjudicado la idea algo así como si hubiera existido Twitter en la antigüedad.
Hasta el avistaje está en dudas, según reportes el primero en ver tierra fue Juan Rodriguez Bermejo más conocido como Rodrigo de Triana quien se hizo más famoso por no haber recibido el premio de diez mil maravedíes a quien primero divisara tierra que al avistaje en si mismo, efectivamente el Almirante argumentó que desde la ubicación en que estaba colocado el grumete no pudo haber divisado las candelas (arribaron de noche) y que por el contrario fue el mismo quien primero las vio.
En lo que todos están de acuerdo es en que nadie tenía la menor idea de que se trabaja de un nuevo continente y no de las indias. (Algo que queda como cierto).
Yo no se si a alguien más que a mi le preocupa todo esto, es como haber sido engañado por muchos años.
En los últimos tiempos ha habido discusiones y resoluciones tanto o más desconcertantes, en todo el mundo hay un sentimiento anti Colón, según parece perdimos nuestra libertad, nuestra cultura, nuestra forma de pensar y hasta nuestra religión y el culpable es ese señor.
La verdad es que creo que muchos se lo están tomando con quien no deben y ni siquiera creo que se debe culpar a alguien por algo que no se sabe. Nadie puede saber qué hubiera pasado si España primero y otros países europeos después no hubieran “colonizado” América. No entiendo la acusación, toda la historia de la humanidad está llena de conquistas, de descubrimientos, de guerras. Somos crueles e insensibles en determinadas situaciones, hay sobradas muestras de ello.
Nunca los hechos históricos son exactamente como se describen porque la historia la escribimos nosotros mismos y siempre el que la escribe es el que gana.
Si dejamos a Colón tranquilo y nos dedicamos a resolver otros muchos y enormes problemas que tenemos quizás nos vaya mejor y la historia será más sencilla o al menos más alegre de contar.
