The Ancients (part 10)

The bottom of the ocean was mainly formed by silicates and basalt, it was remarkable the lack of calcium minerals and the low concentration of dissolved salts, the oceanic ice layer was almost devoid of traces of life, only some complex molecules based on nitrogen, seemed to show remains of some form of life based on this element.

-Whatever lived here left almost no trace of its existence -said Faith Ibraimovich, looking at the electron-scanning microscope images-. Just a few complex molecules.

-The sublimators will soon reach the level of the city, probably in the deepest layers something will be found, or in the city itself - answered Valentina Riquelme, a student of Saul's, who had been assigned to assist her.

-I don't think so, if what happened here is as I think it is, the event was so devastating that these cities are still standing, it's really amazing, but we won't know until the team in the ship, finish with their inquiries.

-What do you think happened, Dr. Faith?

-That distant, almost invisible reddish glow over there is the answer. I think that was responsible - answered Ibraimovich

-But how could this species prosper here, I'm not a biologist, but I guess this environment is not suitable for life to proliferate -commented Valentina.

-I don't think it thrived in the presence of the black star, but before the collapse of the original red supergiant -said Ibraimovich

-So you think they were here during the collapse, that's inconceivable - said Valentina, surprised by Ibraimovich's assumption-. A civilization with the means to make interstellar travel, and even more so with established colonies, which is known, at least on another planet, could have left this world and been saved from catastrophe, the collapse of a star is predictable enough that it can take an entire advanced race by surprise.

-Your statement is absolutely correct- Ibraimovich replied-. At least by our standards we humans ourselves left the Earth before it was completely uninhabitable, but what if, for the ancients, their world had a different meaning than the Earth had for us, and if it were impossible for them to leave it?

-I understand, but it is still incomprehensible to me, to stay and wait for the end, having the means of escape.

Hours later, the data package sent from station BN34 would contain information gathered from the exploration of the colony of the ancients, found twelve light years away, according to the preliminary results, the colony was a mining station, under its now flooded surface, the crust of the planet had been extensively excavated and its material was supposed to be massively extracted from the planet.
