Belief and Reality

As human beings, we have many things we believe in and many we don't. These beliefs are personal.

Some are as a result of personal conviction, personal encounter and others are based on parental narrations.

Which ever way you look at it, we have things we believe in and things we don't believe in.

My article today is based on a conversation i had with a friend who claims she doesn't believe in certain things. She claims she doesn't believe in magic.

The response made me wonder if she has experienced magical moments before or has seen anyone perform magic before to not believe it?

So i asked further if she believes in gods, fate and spirits.

Her responses were:

I believe in only one God and He is the creator of heaven and earth. Fate? Not really but I believe in coincidence. Spirit? Yes and that's the Holy Spirit.

Her answer struck me with the inconsistencies and misconceptions in her claim.

God exist so also gods. Believing in them is one thing, denying they are real is fallacious. Religiously, gods were mentioned in scriptures which clearly shows they exist.

I was surprised to see that coincidence which should be a mere belief was given priority ahead of fatalism.

For the record, God is a purposeful God. Nothing happens by chance or accident. It might look as such but God never does things accidentally.

On spirit, denying that there are other spirits is another rejection of what the scriptures say about them. Many who were possessed by evil spirits were cast out by pastors and Jesus did that first.

It is logical to believe there are gods, spirits and fate. Fate is something we have no control over but happens.

It should be noted that things do not stop to exist simply because you don't believe in them.

Because some Africans believe in demons and spirits walking around 1-3pm in the afternoon doesn't mean they are not real. It just mean you don't believe in them but doesn't deny their existence for those who have truly experienced them.

If you don't believe in Yoruba (tribe in Nigeria) deities, does it mean they are not real? Does it mean they have no powers at all?

If you don't, then how do you explain your prayers against witchcraft, demons and evil spirits? There are people calling these deities and spirits to work against you which you simply use prayer to counter.

Believe it, they are real and wont stop being real because you simply deny that or reject within you that there are such realities.

Thanks for your time.
