Horny Toad: Battle Strategy and Considerations
Hello friends,
the protagonist of this post is the card Horny Toad which is also the protagonist of the Splinterlands contest entitled "Share Your Battle" of the last week.
The topics that I will cover in this post are the following:
Topics
- Card: Horny Toad
- Description, Statistics and Skills.
- Cost, Levels and Ratings
- Level considerations
- A battle of mine with Horny Toad
- Initial Statistics.
- My battle formation.
- Battle Sequence
- Considerations on Horny Toad
Card: Horny Toad
Description, Statistics and Abilities
Horny Toad is a card from the Untamed collection, is a Common card and is a card of the Neutral element.
Horny Toad level 1 has the following statistics:
- Has a low mana cost (3)
- Has 1 attack point
- Has 2 life points and has no armor points.
- Has a very low speed (1)
- Has one ability: Reach.
Thanks to the Reach ability Horny Toad can attack from second position instead of only first.
Cost, Levels and Evaluations
- Level 4: Compared to Level 1 it increases its attack points (1 -> 2) and increases its speed points (1 -> 3).
- Level 6: Compared to Level 4 it increases its armor points (2 -> 4) and acquires a new ability: Poison.
- Level 10 (Max level): Compared to Level 6, it increases its life points (2 -> 4), increases its attack points (2 -> 3) and increases its speed points (3 -> 4).
Level considerations
The level that I think has the best benefits / price ratio is sixth level.
Spending almost $ 9 more to bring Horny Toad to the maximum level does not seem to me to be a convenient choice because there are cheaper cards to buy and which I consider stronger to be deployed in second position such as Grumpy Dwarf of level 8 which only costs $ 3.60.
Now let's see how Horny Toad behaves on the battlefield.
A battle of mine with Horny Toad
If you want to see the battle you can do it from this link: https://steemmonsters.com?p=battle&id=050212ba5b5a70954b6affdb99ea04e611667c40&ref=libertycrypto27
- Silenced Summoners: Summoner card abilities are canceled.
- Lost Magic: Cards with magic attack cannot be used in battle.
- Mana Cap: 17.
- Usable Summoners: All except the summoners of the Fire element.
Initial Statistics
In general, I always choose a balanced battle for the Share your Battle contest.
In this battle, however, I start with an initial advantage relative to the attack points of my battle formation.
Level 4 Brownie is one of my favorite cards and one of the cards I recommend buying.
Today, July 27, 2020 Brownie (Level 4) has a cost of only $ 2.53 and in my opinion it is a really useful card.
In fact, in the battle of this post, if I had chosen to deploy for example Creeping Ooze instead of Brownie, my opponent and I would have started with the same total attack points and I would have lost my initial advantage.
Although the initial statistics are in my favor, the battle is still interesting because my opponent and I adopt different strategies:
- my opponent chooses to bet mainly on cards with distance attack
- I choose to bet on cards with melee attack.
Furthermore, having an initial statistical advantage does not always lead to a victory ...
My battle formation
First position
Why did I field Flesh Golem (Level 4) in first position?
The battle in this post only has 17 mana available.
When there are few mana available my choice is often Flesh Golem (level 4).
It has excellent statistics:
- Has a relatively low mana cost (6)
- It has 9 life points which are many for a card that costs only 6 mana.
- Has an average speed (3) that becomes 4 thanks to the combined use with Brownie.
- Has a good attack (3) which becomes 4 thanks to the combined use with Brownie.
- Has an excellent ability: Heal.
Second position
Why did I choose Horny Toad?
Honestly, it's the first time I've used Horny Toad in a battle of mine because I have better cards in my collection.
The second position is the ideal position for Horny Toad because thanks to the Reach ability he can attack from the second position.
A use of Horny Toad in first position is to be excluded because it has only 2 life points and a low speed and would be eliminated immediately and before being able to conclude a single attack.
Third position
Why did I choose Brownie?
As I wrote before, Level 4 Brownie is a card that I really like.
It only costs one point in terms of mana and has two excellent abilities.
Thanks to the ability Switfness it increases the speed of itself and of the friendly cards of a unit.
Thanks to the ability Inspired increases the attack of itself and of the friendly cards of a unit.
I deployed Brownie in third position because it only has two life points and therefore is a card that needs to be protected.
Fourth position
Why did I choose Screeching Vulture?
Screeching Vulture is another card that I often use when there are few total mana available.
For the same reason exposed for Brownie I chose a central position because Screeching Vulture has only two life points and the central positions are the most protected positions.
It costs only 3 Mana and has two abilities: Opportunity and Scavenger.
The Opportunity ability allows it to attacks the weaker opponent card.
Thanks to the Scavenger ability, it increases its life by one unit each time a card (both opponent and friend) is eliminated.
Fifth position
Why did I choose Halfling Alchemist?
It is a really useful card and the Halving ability allows you to halve the attack of the card that is hit by an its attack (generally the card in first position).
It is a card that I deploy almost always in the penultimate position because it has only one point won and only one armor point.
It is therefore a fragile card but its ability is really useful and can often be decisive for the victory of a battle.
Sixth position
Why did I choose Furios Chicken?
It has a mana cost of 0, it is always a useful card that I deploy very often.
I almost always place it in the last position.
Summoner
Xander Foxwood
Summoner of the Natura element
The summoner I chose is Xander Foxwood.
Xander Foxwood has no abilities but only costs 2 mana points.
When the battle rule is "Silenced Summoner" it is almost always one of the best choices because it saves me some mana points that I can use to deploy monster cards.
Battle sequence
ROUND 2
During the first round my opponent loses two cards while I remain with all the cards in play. My initial statistical advantage increases even if slightly.
In fact at the beginning of round 2 the difference between the total (life points + armor points) between me and my opponent increases (goes from +1 to +2).
My advantage on attack points also increases (goes from +5 to +7).
ROUND 3
At the start of Round 3 all my cards are still in play even though my Flesh Golem has only 2 life.
Halfway through Round, my opponent's Screeching Vulture is eliminated and Javelin Thrower comes in first position.
Javelin Thrower cannot attack from first position and my opponent remains with only two effective attack points.
At this point the battle is decided in my favor.
ROUND 5
The battle ends in round 5 with a victory of mine.
Horny Toad resists until mid-round 3 and contributes to the final victory by managing to complete three total attacks.
The cards that have most decided the battle are:
- Flesh Golem and his useful Heal ability.
- Brownie
- Halfling Halchemist
Horny Toad Considerations
Horny Toad is a card that I have never used before participating in this week's "Share Your Battle" contest.
The reason?
It has two major flaws:
- has a low speed
- has few life points (two life points are very few for a card to be deployed in second position)
A further reason is that in my collection I have better cards to deploy in second position.
But...
... Level 6 Horny Toad is a good card to use in particular with the summoner of the nature element.
For all the other elements there are cards that in my opinion have a much better benefit / cost ratio than Horny Toad and that play better in second position such as:
With this post I participate in the weekly Splinterlands contest entitled "Share Your Battle".
I really like to participate in this contest and if you are registered in Splinterlands you must absolutely participate too.
Haven't you registered on Splinterlands yet?
You are missing out on a more unique than rare opportunity to enjoy yourself and at the same time to earn tokens and cards.

.Interessante questa informazione. Il livello 4 di questo mostriciattolo mi piace.
Grazie @stefano.massari è davvero una carta che ti consiglio di portare al livello 4 perchè nelle battaglie con pochi mana è davero molto utile

.@libertycrypto! Hi!
Great article!
Ah! I LOVE all the reach monsters! But yes, probably still love this little stinker the least.😏
Love the lineup. I generally would choose melee over ranged in this situation. Plus, that Halfling Alchemist. Awesome. I always like putting him in there.
I think the Horny Toad could do well in very specific rulesets... if only we remember him when the time comes.
Thanks for another great post!
