DARK: Mid-Show Review

in GEEKZ11 months ago

Late last year, @soyrosa recommended the show DARK on Netflix. Stuff happened. The holidays, Life, etc.

And then recently one of my boys suggested we watch the first episode. That's when I remembered the recommendation, and said "Yeah, let's do it!"

It's a German show, so unless you speak German, you'll need to follow the subtitles. However, we've found that subtitles are actually a good thing! If you're an English-speaker, it forces you to put aside all distractions and focus on the screen. This is critical, because the show will definitely require your full attention.

It doesn't take long before the viewer finds themselves caught up in one of the most intricate and intellectually thought provoking stories I've ever watched. The show jumps around between a variety of characters, locations, and timelines. In doing so, it weaves them all together in such an elegant and hauntingly beautiful manner.

It's almost shocking how perfect the casting is. It's hard to explain until you watch the show, but once you see how spot on the casting choices are, you'll include that as one of the show's finer points (along with acting, writing, directing, all of it).

There are 3 seasons total, and so far we're about halfway into season 2.

So far, it only seems to get better and better!

If you like shows like Lost, Fringe, or...perhaps shows that straddle the fence between science fiction and the supernatural...give DARK a try! It's pretty awesome!

NICE! Always great to hear a recommendation was actually a match for the person you thought would like it :D German isn't my native language either so I watch with subtitles too, but I'm used to that as my native language, Dutch, would not provide me with a lot of content :D I always hope people would watch more European series, as the subtitle thing is something you get used to and it opens up a whole bunch of great series - I promise! If you need additional recommendations after Dark I will gladly look up a few and share them :-)

PS: I still have to watch season 3! Will put doing that a bit higher up the list now.

Yeah, it's funny, because my family has now gotten into the habit of watching all shows with subtitles--even if the show is in our native language! It's surprising how much you miss because the character is mumbling, muffled, talking fast, has a strong accent, or maybe there's something else going on. People should definitely NOT avoid good shows just because of subtitles.

Any other recommendations are always welcome!

Ah, that's funny! Yes, subtitles can be quite nice support while watching! I watch American shows with English subtitles as sometimes I just can't follow all accents, but I do the same in Dutch, with Dutch subtitles, as our small language has huge diversity, even bigger than the difference between American English and Australian or British English, and some variations on Dutch I just can't understand at all without subtitles :-)

Anyway, I have been planning on writing a 'European shows to watch in Netflix' so maybe I'll finally do that and tag you so you can figure out what to watch next! Also, finally started Season 3 of Dark myself ;-)

I agree, that's definitely a must watch! The soundtracks are excellent too!

Very true! The music is great.

Get your priorities in order. What can be more important than watching TV?

Playing games on #HIVE? LOL #HIVEGames

The best tv show of the year.

It is an amazing show and I am glad that also non-German speakers enjoy it. Usually, German productions looked weird in the past but coming from Netflix, it feels very much like a US production - but taking place in Germany and with German actors. Apparently, it is the highest rated show on Netflix. It also has English dubbing, for those who don't like subtitles. I have already finished the final season and I absolutely loved the ending. Something I cannot say about Fringe (ending was ok) or Lost (ending was terrible).

The show is full of occult symbolism, like the Ouroboros, the keeper of time. I also found the ever appearing St. Christopher very intriguing. The makers certainly have an esoteric message hidden in this show but that is something we are used to in pretty much everything these days. 33 years to jump forward and backward in time? lol

And what was 1986? The Chernobyl disaster with a nuclear power plant in the Ukraine (Chernobyl literally means Wormwood, from Revelation 8:11). I still remember the nuclear clouds coming from there over north-east Germany (Berlin) and my mother stocking food in tin cans for an entire year. And the nuclear power plant is the central element of the show, down to the coloring of Jonas yellow rain coat.

And then the Tabula Smaragdina or Emerald Tablet of Thoth/Hermes Trismegistus. Truly a hermetic show.

Check out Babylon Berlin for a 100% German made show of the highest level.

But if Nate's post didn't already have me, your comment now definitely led me to queue 'Dark'.

You definitely add another layer of meaning to the show!

Thanks for sharing, I have heard many good things about this show. I will give it a chance this week.

Thanks for the reminder!

I watched the first episode and did think it could be an interesting one to continue, but my TV time is so minimal at present, I've not watched anything (bar the football) since!

Will see if I can get rolling on this one...

you got my interest peaked ;)

@nateaguila, Real Life Events and Series or Web Series everything have something to offer. Stay blessed always.

Hello @nateaguila,

Thanks for the recommendation, the suspense and mystery plots, if well structured, often catch the viewer. In my case, science fiction has always caught my attention.

Have a great day.

Ahhh I want to read this but I'm scared of spoilers. I have been told to watch Dark and now I'm seeing this aswell, its a sign!

Haha, I made sure there's no spoilers.

Oh Hell Yeah!!!

I feel like I gather more with captions even when they speak English
