Chippewa Banks Disc Golf Course a #wednesdaywalk

No matter how many disc golf courses I play on in my life, Chippewa Banks is always going to hold a special place in my heart and likely be my favorite. It wasn't the first course I ever played on, but it is definitely the course I have played on the most.

I remember when I got cut to part time from the job I had before my current one. Through the summer I would spend my mornings working and my afternoons on the disc golf course with my teacher buddy who I got into the sport.

After I moved a county away to a city with exactly zero disc golf courses I kind of got out of the habit of playing. Now, this summer I have already played more times than I probably did the last three to five years combined.

My aforementioned teacher friend has a son that has recently been bit by the disc golf bug. This has led him to spend more time on the courses and therefore I have been tagging along as well.

One of the things I love about this course is the fact that it gives you a little bit of everything. Even a slight water hazard if you happen to overshoot some of the holes that run along the banks of the Chippewa river. See where they got the name now?

They recently moved all of the baskets to make the holes longer. They also made pretty much all of the holes par 3 (which is pretty standard for tournament play) so some of the old par 5's that used to be a birdie or par for me are now bogey's if I am lucky!

Yesterday I got there a little early, so I used that opportunity to take some pictures.

Another thing I love about this course is the fact that this whole area used to be a neighborhood longer before I was born. All throughout the course you will find old foundations and bits of concrete and stone work from when there were houses here.

The city has put a fair amount of money into this course which is nice. As you can see from the map above there are only two par 4 holes on the course and the longest hole is 428 feet.

My friend who has been playing more than me lately told me about the UDisc app yesterday. I installed it right away and I am probably going to start using it to keep better track of my scores as we play through the summer. I am hoping to get a lot more throws in this summer. Maybe even making it a weekly thing. Since my friend is a teacher and gets the summer off I think he has been playing pretty much every day!

This is the view from the first tee. The basket is straight ahead and to the left. You can't really see it in this shot. Splitting those two trees is probably the biggest challenge of this hole. Many people choose to arc around to the right or left. The problem is if you go too far right you end up out of bounds on the road.

This is a view from the fairway of the second hole.

This is the section of the course where you really start to get into the woods. This hole cuts hard to the left. The key is to bend your disc around the corner just right or lay up straight ahead and then make your approach from there. Since it is only a par 3, laying up can come back to bite you in the butt sometimes.

This is one of the holes that you love to hate. It cuts hard to the right after the trees. Looking at it from the tee pad it seems almost impossible. I am pretty good at bending my disc to the right, so I usually end up in a good position on the fairway. Sometimes I end up in the trees though.

Finally, this hole on the back nine is probably one of my favorites. It is pretty much a straight shot. If you look really closely there is a small clump of trees to the middle left and then another clump of trees just beyond them a little to the right. My tee throw yesterday landed just past the second clump of trees. It was an easy par for me.

There used to be some lower hanging branches off that tree to the right on this hole. It made it a bit of a guessing game whether you should try to go under it or over it. Sadly, those branches were damaged in a storm or flooding several years ago.

Lucky for you I didn't take a shot of every single hole. This is the extent of my #wednesdaywalk through Chippewa Banks disc golf course. If you are ever in the Midland, MI area hit me up and maybe we can play a round!

Looks like a beautiful course I have never played disc golf and maybe only ever thrown a disk a couple of times but it’s something I would live to try sometime

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk

It is great fun! Anyone can do it really no matter their skill level. That is part of what makes it so cool. Plus it isn't expensive to get started. I meant to schedule this for tomorrow but accidentally posted it today. I am afraid my rewards are going to suffer due to my mistake :)

I had to google this, never heard for it! I used to play regular golf and was looking at your hole with the split trees. A golf ball may ricochet off those and hit you hard. It has happened to me in the past... I know!

That's part of what I love about disc golf. Cheaper to buy the equipment, you can play 18 holes in ninety minutes or less, and it is much less dangerous. The community is really cool too. I have never met an angry disc golfer.

I have never met an angry disc golfer.

I have met several angry regular ones. The sport is a real stuck up one here.., and they are very protective about their sacred clubs which are were mostly built around 1900.

Good to see you comment voting now, did you know it's extremely lucrative on curation compared to posts?

I have been comment voting for quite a while now. I finally found a good balance that allows me to keep my VP up. You should totally try disc golf sometime. It is really fun and laid back.

I'm not sure where you are, but I think you might be wrong about that... my map indicates there are courses on all the inhabited continents.

Been living in Spain for years and never seen of heard about it but you´re right it has 18 courses although they are really spread out and only at the coasts. So for my future plans it seems there is lots

of room for one more course

That is pretty weak compared to some countries. I wasn't sure where you were located. Maybe one time if you take a holiday... The equipment is much cheaper than traditional golf to get started.

I've always wanted to try this, as I love Frisbee, but I dont think there are any courses near me.

It's quite fun! You should try it. Even if you just choose a tree to throw at. you can really make your own course anywhere.
