Lately I've come across some interesting graffiti on urban surfaces... got enough stuff for a few months of competition. I'd like to share this one first, but the main thing is to tell the story behind it.

So, the story goes... I've driven past this nook two hundred times. It's on a busy street, but it's quite secluded - in a solid recess between houses, not very visible from the outside. And the area is quite industrial. I can't say exactly when this picture graced the place (but you can pinpoint exactly when it stopped - more on that later). Obviously it came along with the covid, somewhere in the process of this marathon, the artist was inspired by the subject and made the sketch. The actual address is: St.Petersburg, Blagodatnaya str., 50. #geotag: [59.876528, 30.338806]
But if you come here you will dont see it anymore.

I was always itching to take a picture of it, but I never got around to it: riding the tram in the morning, rushing to work... somehow it wasn't convenient. And I kept putting it off for later: one day... walk by instead of rushing on the tram, and then!

Do you feel that since I'm talking about it, there must be a catch? And there is... But a little more patience. The building on the right is a bus depot, a repair depot or something like that. And on the left is the building of the district outpost of Ulmart, one of the biggest chain retailers, where I used to buy flash drives, DVDs and other useful IT stuff in the 2000s. The need to visit this place has not happened to me for a long time, all needs are satisfied. Well, almost all of them. So the picture pleased me only through the window. And so in January this year, that is after almost a year, I finally got there; walking on my own, without any tram, and with a camera in my backpack...

...only to discover that reconstruction of the entire block was in full swing - read: the demolition of Yulmart and the clearing of everything in the way of the new business centre. The whole huge block was in ruins.

But! the most amazing thing was that I was lucky (gypsy luck!): a day or two later, and I would have found only a pile of rubble. But I could not simply walk up and take a picture either: a solid fence had appeared between me and the work of art. My thoughts were rushing round in a circle for a couple of minutes, and I seriously considered a possibility to walk along the fence (long!) to find an entrance and to try to penetrate to the forbidden territory, and then to return along the fence to the place I needed. Ridiculous, really. Clearly, this is an option somewhere in the realm of utopia....

Then I did the only thing I could do: I pulled myself up, hung on the fence and took a few shots with the camera in my outstretched hand without aiming. I had a 16-35mm wide-angle lens with me that day, which was generally adequate for the task at hand. The camera was able to focus for me and it was a good thing that the horizon was crooked. Of course, to go into the territory and take a picture from an arm's length would be more pleasant and the picture would be of higher quality, but - an excavator was digging a lot... you could end up without a camera, so it's an option for extreme people. My little adventure turned out to be quite safe.

Now a glance at an image that I managed to save and immortalise at the very last moment reminds me first and foremost of how ephemeral this genre is. How ephemeral and transient urban art can be, even in the most "trustworthy" places... sometimes disappearing along with those very places... I'm sure everyone has similar cases.
