Cheddar gorge - dramatic gorge in England

Last year we did a road trip through the UK, and along the way found some truly amazing sights. Not only does the UK have some amazing drives and scenery, but also loads of history aswell. One of the most incredible drives we did was through the Cheddar gorge - surprisingly in Cheddar. It was only a short drive, but well worth it with some of the most dramatic cliff faces I have seen.

Dramatic scenes

It is possible to drive through the gorge in both directions, and as it was a short drive we drove back up to get a different view - this was worth it! Although not overly difficult to drive it was a bit intimidating, and so driving back up we knew what to expect and took it in a bit more.

Welcome!

There isnt to many places to stop along the way, and there was some paid parking, but I didnt see anyone pay as most people just stopped for a quick photo and carried on. From memory the price of parking was fairly high. As long as you are careful and respectful then you can stop along the way to get photos without to many problems.

We found some goats

Near the top we saw some goats which was pretty special. There was a family of them and we stopped and checked them out. Near the top is also a great place to stop and admire the cliffs and peaks - they are remarkable and would make for a great movie set. I believe there is a walkway near the top where people were walking to the very tip. We didnt bother with this as I read somewhere you had to pay for this, and would also have to pay for parking.

Shops at Cheddar gorge

Although this place seemed remote to me, it was a tourist hotspot, and thus on the way down we came across some shops. We didnt bother checking them out as we knew they would be very expensive! They did look nice though and was cool driving past them.

Amazing scenes

All in all this was a great drive, and had some amazing scenery. Not something that took along time, but could have if we had done the climb and checked out the shops. We also read that there were some caves here to visit, which we also didnt do because we were poor and already seen our fair share of caves.

All photos taken by me!

I was here a while back...Did the cave walk to see the stalactites and stalagmites which was very cool. This is where they found the Cheddar man England's oldest most complete skeleton. The original is in the Museum of Natural History in London, which we also saw, but they have placed a replica at the spot they found it inside the caves. It's pretty spectacular and well-worth going into the cave system.

The drive was incredible. It was hard travelling on a budget as we had to pick and choose what we saw. Just couldnt afford this one at the time. Luckily there are many caves here in New Zealand!

It does sound pretty cool and now I am feeling like we missed out :(

I understand, and England is a costly place, or so we found it. Maybe you'll go back...It was pretty spectacular. But then there's so many spectacular places in NZ too right? We loved it there.

Yea it was costly! Much more so than other places such as Poland, Spain, France - most of Europe actually apart from Scandanavia. Yea theres loads of great stuff here to see - pretty costly here too

Yes, we found NZ to be costly as well. $2.38/L for fuel we were paying $1.38 in Aus for! The supermarket was expensive too.

Price has gone down because of Covid-19 its about $1.8 now. Probably gone down in Aussy too?

Yeah, down to about 0.80. I buy diesel though, which more, but that's also down. $1.35.
