Visit to Penang, Malaysia
Ah Penang! What memories I have from there, new and old. I hope this finds you well and adjusted. Today we'll go to Penang, Malaysia. Over the years, I have been there so many times for visa runs from Thailand and stayed longer and longer each time. Recently, I lived in Penang for 6 months. Having lived in India previously, I was so pleased to find proper South Indian food along with normal North Indian food, proper tea and all for a very cheap price. Not as cheap as India, but the considerable higher degree of cleanliness is well worth paying a bit more for. Penang is absolutely such an interesting place with such an incredible mix of cultures all co-habitating proudly together, that it's impossible to properly document but here a few photos to check out and get a feeling of the place.
Teh tarik. You can find this anywhere anytime. My friend's stall is 24 hours. A perfect way to start your day and normally there's a local there to have a good chat with.
A Penang hawker stall. Tea and cheap meals provided for everyone.
The Bengali mosque
Some more Tek tarik made to perfection every time.
Bamboo art installment. A bit dark but a nice contrast ...
Cycling is fun in Georgetown even though some alleys are very narrow
A classic building left over from the British. A lovely park across the street with an art exhibition. Penang has wonderful art, music, and food festivals
Obviously, they've never seen the "Don't mess with Texas" motto
Bicycle rental shop in the middle of tourist central
Didn't know Malaysians knew Tavis Smiley. Many Americans don't. He's great
The subtle beauty of the Chinese temple
The five foot way Penang style
One of the many Chinese gods. Happy guy
Street art exhibit. Actually a recyclers cart... a lot of old Chinese people do it
Respect. The riskshaw wallers are out there rain or shine. Most come from the mainland and sleep in their rickshaws. Mainly tourists ride them these days...
An Indian Malaysian rickshaw waller . We had a nice chat. Its a hard life for them
A Chinese goddess
Cats hanging out in the alley with tables w/o chairs
Another random alley. I just love the different colors and perspective. Cats love to pose for pictures here. Georgetown just breaths secret history in the back alleys

I love those photos. We were going to go to Penang to renew our visa for Thailand in February, but the cost was less to go to Kuala Lumpur so we changed our minds. K.L was still a good experience though.
Yes Kl is also cool in a very different way. I'm amazed how modern it is. Last visit there I had time between buses and trains so went walking in the huge park nearby the central station in the rain. Absolutely beautiful in the middle of the city. One of the most underrated cities in the world I reckon. However, Penang is so special and warms my heart immensely every time I step on that ferry from the mainland. The first thing I do is drink tea and eat samosas haha. Hope you get to visit there in the future. Thanks for the comment as always.

The Indian food is quite good in Malaysia, some of the best I've had outside India.

Agreed. Especially the South Indian food. Mostly Tamils in Penang. Shame I don't have pics of their temples... Somewhere perhaps. Thanks as always for the comments. Hope all's well in Surinam. Not too serious curfew now?

Oh Penang. I think I'm due to go back, especially when you started talking about the authentic Indian food that does NOT come with a side toe nail fungus! Have a great day brother!
Haha.. well said. Seems each time I've been there I've stayed longer. Last time was 6 months. And yes a bit of cleanliness can go a long way!! You also have a good one brother :) Keep the sunny side up.. I'm due for a visit there as well. Some really true friends there.
I've been to Penang a few times and have fond memories of those 24 hour Indian food joints that have so much amazing food that is prepared so quickly. Getting a Tandoori set for $3 is just amazing.
It really is amazing. Even the Malaysians know of Penang as having the cheapest and best quality Indian food around. I lived in India off and on 10 years and concur. Real quality :)
Thanks for the upvotes and reblog as well!
I was in Penang before the bridge existed.... so yeah, it was a while ago. I enjoyed it and felt that getting out of Georgetown on a scooter was a great experience as well. As soon as you leave the city and head towards the other side of the island the crazy traffic just disappears as well!
Indeed. I'm a cyclist so my ride was around the island :) Great ride with a stop for coffee along the way. The other side of the island is just quiet village life. Found some amazing spots actually. I've another article coming about the national park... Oh must have been great before the bridge. Locals tell me the bridge brought much more traffic. Georgetown is great but the traffic can be tiresome... I still love the ferry. Even if I take a bus I'll take the ferry across to the Butterworth terminal first :)
