Phuket Street Art - Part 1

PHUKET STREET ART.png

Hello everyone! Hope this post finds you well and healthy. Since no one can travel at the moment I'll show you some of my neighborhood scenes. I live in Phuket, Thailand which is a very famous tourist destination renown for beaches and crystal clear water. And rightfully so. Tourists flock to the beaches which ring the island.

Street Art in Phuket?

Recently however more in the interior of the island, Phuket Town has began to draw some tourists of its own with street art as one of the attractions just a block away from Old Town. Today I'll show you Part 1 of a series on Phuket Street Art.
I live just a few blocks from here and have to admit I never really checked out the street art very closely. Normally, there are tourists taking photos or I'm just on my way somewhere. Today I decided to stop and take some photos. Pleasantly, I was surprised at the number of pieces of art, the high quality of the paintings and how well they depict historical scenes of Phuket Town. Due to so many pieces, today we'll look at some paintings based on local girls.

This is a painting of a local Chinese/Thai girl with Chinese lanterns in the background. Phuket has a huge population of Chinese Thai, especially in the downtown area.

A closer look shows that her long hair reveals her Chinese heritage as Thai women would traditionally wear their hair short in the past.

The full view shows the location as the side of a local private residence.

This part of the artwork shows a mother escorting her children to school with an old style food carrier with lotus flowers for praying at the temple. At the end of this alley is a Buddhist temple with a school attached. In Thailand many temples have free schools for the local population. Residents must pay for uniforms and books however.

This is not the attack of the monster lobsters in Phuket! Stay calm haha. This is outside of a quite popular seafood restaurant with another local Chinese/Thai girl sitting atop a Chinese container smiling down at passersby.

This artwork is outside of a local Chinese temple across the street from the giant lobster. The style is quite different and seems that there is a power struggle over who is the puppet master...

This picture is difficult to get to because after the artist completed the beautiful work the local electric authority decided to obstruct it with electric boxes and cables. I suppose they aren't art fans. I do love the way the girl looks so beautiful and relaxed taking a nap in the afternoon heat.

IMG_20200704_123743.jpg
These are local Chinese style cakes baked for certain festivals. Very local style. I love when the street art portrays the local culture.

IMG_20200704_123724.jpg
The lovely girl taking a rest after a hard morning of work. Phuket is quite hot in the afternoon normally. Best to relax at this time. She is wearing old style local style clothes perhaps from the Baba tradition.

IMG_20200704_122130.jpg

A local scene of people perhaps waiting for the bus... Nice that they show a Muslim man as the population of Phuket is almost split evenly between Buddhist/Chinese and Muslim.

IMG_20200704_122144.jpg
A vendor selling local style roti to a local out of her window. These types of carts are still the norm in Phuket and found everywhere. People normally sell roti, soy milk, noodle soup, or any number of other items. Thailand is famous for food and the local food is by far the best!

Thanks @asean for the curation and reblog! Yeah it also blows my mind Justin. Such a mix of modern and hip with traditional culture. I was blown away to see top quality break dancing in the park my first trip here in 2000.

These are fantastic. I remember when I was last in Peanang, Malaysia they had recently transformed the streets into a "street art" walk of some sort and it was really cool. It's good to see Phuket doing this as well.

Thanks @trip-hop. Yes its a nice idea. Actually there is a long history between Penang and Phuket. At first I was disappointed truthfully because it seemed like just a copy of Penang but the newer art has taken a life of its own unique to Thailand. Part 2 is coming up soon... Thanks for the reblog as well!
