Cycling Vietnam - The Delta and HCMC (sort of)
3 years ago I was cycling Vietnam after 4 months in Cambodia having come from living in Thailand. I was enjoying the new culture and checking out places to live as well. However, I wasn't up for cycling in HCMC (Saigon) with a loaded bicycle. The countryside was suiting me perfectly and heading for the big city was not in my plans. So after cycling through the Delta stopping in Can Tho for a few days replacing my popping spoke nipples (Cambodian roads take their toll), having an awesome time crossing the Mekong, I was in no mood for the big city of HCMC.
Ferries are the best
So far I've had great luck finding ferries using google maps. Easy enough. I had seen one that looked like a great way to avoid the traffic in HCMC and get over towards Vung Tao and hopefully more quiet roads. Sniffing around I was able to find all of the ferries and successfully get to my destinations! I took a few picture you can see below.
No questions asked. Pay your ticket and ride the ride.
A glimpse of HCMC from the bridge on the way to the ferry.
The ferry saving me from the massive traffic jam they call HCMC.
The ferry across the Mekong in HCMC.
Now that's a bridge! Keeping above the chaos below.
HCMC is a massively spread out city.
The bridge over the Mekong Delta where the river splits and requires two ferries and a few bridges to cross.
Near to the end of the grand river of SE Asia. The Mekong.
Vietnamese wear masks even pre-Covid. Avoid sun and dust. The kid looks terrified haha.
Ready to ride off the ferry.
Thanks for reading and feel free to...

Awesome and informative fost @chrisinphuket. I've dealth with the traffic of HCMC when I got stranded there after arriving at the airport during Tết, not smart trip planning on my part, I must admit.
I skeedaddled outta there as soon as a bus to the Cambodian border was available.

I remember your taxi driver story you told me hehe. Would be a good experience to post... Actually later on I spent some time there and people were quite kind. Just that traffic. The 1st district is wonderful and the War Museum amazing.
Wearing mask pre COVID - how novel.
I've never been to South Vietnam - only the north.
Funny as its the opposite for me. Didn't make it much past Nha Trang. Perhaps another time. I've heard the regions are quite different. People in the south were quite relaxed outside of HCMC of course ;)
