Nneka & Norah Jones [Music A to Z Challenge #N - Part One]

avatar

There are so many good bands out there that it is impossible to pick only two, so if you all don't mind, I'm going to do another double run for @psos new challenge: Music A to Z Challenge #N!

Today I'll present two artists that most people should enjoy and tomorrow I'll come back for the Metal version! 😁

  • 2 artists starting with the letter N:

1) Nneka

Style: Reggae / Soul / R&B
Country: Nigeria

This girl comes from a poor country in Africa, Nigeria, and her music reflects it. She writes a lot about the struggles of the people in African countries... Many of her songs are political, talking about the corruption which is rampant in her own country and in the neighbouring regions. She also puts a lot of her faith into the songs, with many of them making references to the bible and god.

She doesn't limit herself to a single style and despite talking a few languages, her songs are mostly in English, in order to be able to make her message reach a wider audience.

She was in Portugal a few times and I was lucky enough to see one of her concerts. It was a memorable experience, where she put all of her raw energy up on stage.

One of my personal favourites is the title Heartbeat, released in 2008 in her second full album: No Longer at Ease.

Another perfect song is the collaboration she did with Joss Stone, where the both of them performed in the streets of Lagos, Nigeria. This one is entitled Babylon:

2) Norah Jones

Style: Jazz / Soul
Country: USA

This is a name most of you should know... Norah Jones is a world acclaimed Jazz singer who happens to be the daughter of the also world famous Indian artist Ravi Shankar and the North American Sue Jones, a concert producer. She has two half sisters who are also musicians: Anoushka Shankar and Shubhendra Shankar. I guess we can say that music runs wild in this family's blood.

Norah Jones already toured the world a few times, her albums sold over 50 million copies worldwide and she has released 7 studio albums and 3 live DVDs so far.

Her song Sunrise was a huge success 11 years ago... and it still holds its charm today!

I hope you have liked these 2 artists. 😁

I feel weird about how you refer to Nigeria as a poor country in Africa. It's bad yeah but are we 'poor'? I wouldn't say that especially as there are other ways to describe Nigeria in the music context but you went with poor.
