Getting Creative & Self Sufficient During Inflation 🍔 #DashOutSunday
Ya'll are probably getting tired of reading about the financial crisis in Suriname, but like they say in Sranan Tongo "Wan Takru e Tyar' Wan Bun" (literally: with evil comes good), which translates to when bad things are happening, good things are following. People here usually say it to emphasize that you never know beforehand why something bad has happened or in this case that maybe because of the predicament we're in, we're starting to become more self sufficient and are coming up with solutions.
As is the case with fast-food restaurants here - they're supposedly the cheapest food in for example the USA - that have become somewhat of a "luxury" outing here. I can remember in my teenage and adolescent years a burger costing approximately SRD5,- and now it's around SRD40,- and the same goes for fries, pizzas and fried chicken.
Luckily for us, the designated chef @rarej gets creative and thinks of ways to make a chicken sandwich himself, which was the result of our hearty breakfast this morning. The only ingredients needed were a strip of chicken breast, flour, pepper, garlic and some love from our chef 😅. After mixing and battering up, the strips went into the frying pan. As his assistant, I put some bread to warm up in the electric oven and sliced some tomatoes and pickles. @rarej also made a delicious garlic sauce to go with it.
Seeing how easy and simple this recipe was, I'm wondering if we'll ever buy those items at fast food places again, knowing how much they charge. We probably will on days when we don't want to cook or are out for an entire day and have no time to prepare something, but not because we just want to. So, how about you? Any recipe you're thinking of trying out yourself?

A whole lot would have to happen. $10 seems more realistic at this point.
It's good to have some chefery skills in these times, things have gotten so expensive. Even though I wasn't born here, me and Pov talk about things like, "Remember two years ago when kouseband costs $2.50 SRD?" I just saw some today being sold for $12.50 SRD, and they were half-rotten.
That is so true... Prices have gone up exponentially in a small window of time. Every time people go to the store, they have to be mentally prepared of marked up prices. We don't drink soft drinks very often and just recently saw the increased price of SRD22,- for 1.5L, while we used to pay SRD5,- and even SRD3.50.

Sweet sodas is a serious thing here indeed. I know Surinamers love their Fernandes and Coca-Cola, so if things keep going this way we'll be looking back on the "Great Fernandes War of 2021."
Hahaha I like my Sprite; the 7-Up variant here 😅. Glad I drink a lot of water now, so don't miss it a lot and keeps me from spending too much on that luxury, because it's now considered luxury with SRD22,- for 1.5L 😞.
