Cloning Tomato plants

We got two Tomato plants about a month or so ago. And one of them already needs staking. I gave it a support using a stick in the ground and some wire. But now its continuing to grow so I'll take cuttings to start new plants. And by doing that I'll slow down the growth of this one I planted.

I used some old mason jars and cut the long stems where flowers have not formed yet. So not to lose any tomatoes that way.

They will soak in water for the next few weeks as roots form in the jars. Then I can plant them in the ground and get more Tomato plants. This technique is also known as cloning.

There were about five cuttings I managed to make. I left the other stems as they had tomatoes and or flowers already forming.

I think the warm soil has really kicked this plant into its growing cycle. Finding new flowers every few days.

We got two Tomatoes almost ready. If we wanted to do fried green tomatoes they are just about there. Otherwise we will wait for them to ripen and turn red to harvest.

Glad I took some cuttings otherwise i would need to cage this plant. So it does not fall over and break the stems.

So far the caterpillars and bugs have not gotten to them yet. So the plant is real strong. Hoping the cuttings will form roots and do well. I'll post updates as they come.

I have never heard of this before. My tomatoes grew so big that I had to cut the top (appx 2 meters), as I saw no other option... But, maybe I will try this, sounds like a great option :)

Yup, many plants clone easily. Like mint, pepper, tomato, rosemary and others. Heres a link to a bunch more.

Hah yup next time you can do that now you know.

Man, thanks for the link :) Even before you sent it, I have already done my first test cloning some tomatoes... three glasses standing in the window next to me, hoping for some roots to develop within shortly. Do you use any rooting hormones, or maybe use honey or something to quicken the process? Or do you just do it the natural way?

Oh nice! Hope they work out for ya. I did not use any rooting hormone. But if they do root I'll probably try some in the water. But this time I will see if it roots without hormone.
