Khmer music in Surin, Thailand
This is a video I made while cycling near Surin, Thailand. Surin is close to the Cambodian border and has a large population of Cambodian (Khmer) speaking people. They are Thai citizens but speak Khmer as their first language. These people's ancestors were part of the Angkor Wat Empire which extended well into what is known as Thailand today and previously as Siam. Siam came into power as Angkor's power was declining. Apparently though they can't understand the modern Khmer language in Cambodia but the Cambodians can understand their dialect.
I went cycling to meet a new friend outside of the town where I was staying but she didn't show up. After waiting for a while I decided to cycle back stopping for a cool drink under the tree from some local people. I heard some eerie music sounding like a violin. Luckily I caught a boy playing the traditional Khmer instrument under the tree without him noticing until near the end of the video. Its so wonderful to see kids keeping the culture alive!
Hope you enjoy the video and the lovely Khmer music!
