I almost deleted Facebook ....

avatar

I know you all want me to. I know how cool it is to stick it to the man. I know how uncool it is to be where everyone else is, especially when it’s already out of fashion. I know how much of a souless Android the CEO is and how much the algorithms control everything.

But I didn’t delete Facebook.

There are two main reasons why. The first is that I have a lot of friends I want to be able to message easily and many are not on telegram or wherever else. Facebook is the easiest way to have a contact list with all of them. I’ll probably make a contact list of my own one day just in case though.

The other reason is to try and connect the people from my past with the people in my present, Hive with the rest of my life. The vast majority of people I know are not on Hive and I like having a way to possibly pull them over.

So if I can bring 3 friends over to Hive, it’ll be worth it.

But my account was fucked by the algorithms after years of inactivity and a few posts from RT, who ironically I don’t read anymore even if they are here on Hive.

So I decided to start a new account there for the people who really support and enjoy me. The old account will be a buffer for all the people I meet, and the best of the best will be added by my second account. I will probably try to keep it down below 100 people, and people who want to interact....

People who want to interact are probably going to enjoy Hive, and so I will be posting some of my favorite Hive articles over there....not too many and not too fast. I don’t wanna push anyone.

Once I identify potentially hivesters and slowly start bringing them over, I’ll become less and less active. The fact is, I’m barely active as it is.

I know, I know. you quit years ago or you never had Facebook. You are awesome. But I like having a ton of people in my life and being able to choose what flavor I want to interact with. Hive is enough for that but I like having some of them from my real life too, which is why I won’t quit just yet.

I want to keep an open channel to everyone without being bogged down by stuff that distracts me from my purpose. I want to stay in touch and catch up and not get lost in the algorithms. I have a whole lot to offer so I am doing what I can to offer it. If it doesn’t work out, that’s just how it is. I’m done stressing about it.

I’m no longer afraid of he spotlight.... for the first time ever, and also trying to steer that attention towards productive and fun shit and not let it leak into political banter.

The future will be bottom up so we have to build it! No more deferring to people above us. No need to do it through any means we don’t feel comfortable with. We can do it through whatever means we like. I like Hive and Natural medicine and the hive family 😃. I like letting things flow and putting them out as many places as I can manage, then using that to introduce people to other people so that things can occur beyond my own personal intentions.

Yeah.

Loll... Welcome Back To Facebook although it's more like sneaking back in and starting afresh.

I'm sure that you will get the spotlight there very quickly and on the long run, your influence over there will attract more people to hive. Facebook have always been a nice place for publicity if you can escape being teased by their algorithm.

Heheh... This probably means that you won't be active here for some time.

No way, Hive is always priority as far as interacting online. Always!

Damn! Could have added the Leofinance tag to this post.
As for me I Only have Facebook to keep up with my previous interactions of friends who I don't want too close but a little close to me.

Why Leo? Are they open to random blog posts?

Yeah that’s exactly why I think Facebook is still worth having even if I put no energy into it.

Well if seem like an indirect finance content to me since it's Facebook related. It's not random I believe it qualifies as a finance content.

We still need other social media to connect our stuff with the normies. I haven't abandoned it even when I have little use for it. Facebook has just been a few minute site visit for social updates just to see what else everyone is doing within my circle. Then realize how much of an antisocial I can be to not even bother with their drama. I just use this to connect to co-workers and other social gathering meetups but nothing along the lines of sharing my thoughts and etc.

Yeah the algorithms and feed are really terrible but messenger is really useful too. I hope we have better alternatives that are widely used to the point where we can delete fb one day but as long as so many acquaintances are gathered there, might as well have an account.

Thanks for your interesting post.

  • I totally understand your arguments, emotions and decision.
  • I left Facebook 3 years ago after some months of thinking about it, mostly because I wasn‘t interested in status games anymore and for the contact with my friends I don‘t need Facebook.
  • On Twitter there‘s the saying „Facebook is a network with people of your past and twitter with people of your future.“ I think the same applies to Hive.

Past and future...sums up the two platforms really well though I don’t like a future where I have to please algorithms all the time. Fb is my past, hive is my future and Twitter is where I gather people to come build the future

I never really gave up on Facebook... in the sense that I "needed" it to stay connected to certain business-related communities. I did almost get my account shut down once, because I was posting news updates from Al-Jazeera English.

At this point, I'm grateful I didn't erase Facebook as it will prove useful in our efforts to tell the world about the Natural Medicine community. I belong to (and am admin of) several mental health/wellness groups with a reach of more than 50,000. Of course, that also means I need to "get active" again over there, so people will take my recommendations seriously.

Doooo it! I’ll delegate as much lotus to you as you want if you can bring some of those people over and help them find their niche. I think it’ll be much easier to bring them over by introducing them not only to hive but to NM. Hive is a free for all. NM is a place to build the same kind of communities as Facebook but also an economy around it.

I had no idea you were so famous 😛

You don't have to justify your decisions to anyone ;D

If it feels right at the time it's probably right for the time :)

I feel pretty good about most of the decisions that I make, still like explaining them to people 😆

It's different if you just like doing it for yourself as well as everyone else, as long as you don't feel obliged I guess XD

For a bridge builder like you FB is a necessary evil. Keep up the good work. We and the world in general need people like you.

Big hug!

I wouldn’t cal it necessary or evil. It’s more like a useful blah

If it wasn't for practically all of my friends and family being on it, I would have no reason to be there. Facebook has become for me, basically a place where I send private messages to loved ones. I haven' t had time to post on FB in ages, and I honestly don't care too because my real-life family and friends are too judgmental.

Hive is a safe place, and I'm not sure if I want my friends and family here or not, at least not all of them.

It’s been a tricky thing determining who is on the same page as me. I found a tribe in 2013 but then I evolved and between that, the long distance and the language barrier, we barely interact online.

Hive is becoming a second tribe but aside from NM I don’t think my other tribe would and hive would jive.

Then there are hometown and University people who always surprise me. They all seemed to have started empathizing with the way I see the world, but it doesn’t mean they have time or energy for it.

Ah, oh well. It’s all a game
