Cada cultura va desarrollando sus propias formas de analizarse, de comprenderse, un mecanismo normal surgido de la misma necesidad de reconocimiento e identidad. Siempre habrá aspectos en los que cada grupo se podrá reconocer, son los relacionados con las raíces más profundas de la vida social.

Pero hay otros aspectos que también pretenden asignar características comunes a los integrantes de un grupo humano, muchas veces surgidos de visiones prejuiciadas, ese es el origen de los estereotipos, conclusiones que pueden coincidir o no con la forma real de ser de la gente. Les comento algunos de los que se siguen mencionando en mi cultura.

Un país de flojos

Este estereotipo se remonta a la época de la colonia, los conquistadores vieron que los indígenas tenían un ritmo de vida más lento, se ocupaban de otras actividades, con otra concepción del tiempo. Al no entender que eran gente diferente, inmediatamente los etiquetaron de flojos, y esa idea ha sido repetida hasta el cansancio por todas las élites que nos han dirigido.

Pero si uno observa la realidad de la gente no podría llegar a esa conclusión. En nuestro país lo normal es encontrarse con gente muy trabajadora, acostumbrada a ganarse la vida con su esfuerzo. Son los que producen los alimentos que llegan a nuestra mesa y los que todos los días salen a librar una dura batalla contra la hiperinflación. En HIVE tenemos una buena representación de esa gente trabajadora. En el mundo hispano son muchísimas las publicaciones de excelente calidad producidas por nuestros compatriotas.

A country of lazy people

Not understanding that they were different people, they immediately labeled them as lazy, and that idea has been repeated ad nauseam by all the elites who have led us.

But if one observes the reality of the people one could not come to that conclusion. In our country it is normal to find hard-working people, accustomed to earning a living with their efforts. They are the ones who produce the food that reaches our table and who every day go out to fight a hard battle against hyperinflation. At HIVE we have a good representation of these hard-working people. In the Hispanic world there are many publications of excellent quality produced by our compatriots.

Un país de vivos

Está relacionado con el anterior y básicamente tiene el mismo origen. Se dice que somos expertos en inventar trampas para no cumplir las tareas que se nos asignan. Hay un cuento muy famoso que alimenta el imaginario del vivismo criollo, el de Tío Tigre y Tío Conejo. En el cuento el conejo tiene la habilidad de engañar al tigre para que no se lo coma, es un ejemplo de cómo el pobre se puede salir con las suyas ante el poderoso. Creo que en cualquier sociedad que ha conocido grandes desigualdades sociales, como la nuestra, se van a crear este tipo de historias, donde el pobre sobrevive a fuerza de ingenio. Es verdad que podemos encontrar gente maliciosa y deshonesta, pero eso lo hay en todas las sociedades. Si todos fueran vivos y perversos, pues no se podría vivir. La realidad es que podemos vivir porque en la mayoría de nuestra gente habita la bondad.

A country of the living

I believe that in any society that has known great social inequalities, such as ours, this type of stories will be created, where the poor survive by dint of ingenuity. It is true that we can find malicious and dishonest people, but there are such people in all societies. If everyone were alive and perverse, we would not be able to live. The reality is that we can live because goodness dwells in most of our people.

Un país de gente cariñosa

Somos una nación que no ha conocido enfrentamientos internos, no hemos tenido guerras donde se enfrenten hermanos contra hermanos. Si hemos conocido revueltas políticas en las que algunos grupos han llegado a la violencia, pero son episodios que no involucran al grueso de la población. Nuestra sociedad ha sido muy tolerante. Hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XX en nuestra tierra se asentaron numerosas personas provenientes de diferentes partes del mundo, principalmente europeos, asiáticos y latinoamericanos, contra ellos nunca hubo discriminación, lo normal es que se aceptaran como unos compañeros más. El venezolano se hace amigo de cualquiera, solo le basta conocer a una persona para ponerse a conversar con él/ella como si lo conociera de toda la vida. Nuestra gente es muy amable y hospitalaria, le gusta hacer sentir bien al otro.

A country of loving people

We are not a nation that has known internal confrontations, we have not had wars where brothers are pitted against brothers. We have known political revolts in which some groups have become violent, but these are episodes that do not involve the bulk of the population. Our society has been very tolerant. Until the second half of the 20th century, many people from different parts of the world settled in our country, mainly Europeans, Asians and Latin Americans, there was never any discrimination against them, it is normal that they were accepted as fellow citizens. Venezuelans make friends with anyone, they only need to know a person to start talking to him/her as if they had known him/her all their lives. Our people are very friendly and hospitable, they like to make others feel good.

Un país de mujeres hermosas.

Desde el año 1979 Venezuela ha ganado seis veces el certamen de Miss Universo. Para ser un país pequeño eso ha significado un gran logro, de allí que hayamos tenido tanta notoriedad en ese aspecto. Pero no solo es el Miss Universo, también los otros certámenes internacionales como el Miss Mundo han sido ganados muchas veces por nuestras compatriotas. Eso nos ha dado una merecida fama de ser considerado un país de mujeres muy hermosas, de acuerdo con ciertos estándares, claro está.

Durante mi niñez había estereotipos que hablaban de las diferentes zonas del país. A los centrales nos tenían por gente presumida y ostentosa. A los Occidentales, sobre todo los de las áreas andinas, los tenían por gente lenta y de difícil comprensión. A los Orientales por gente echadora de broma y belicosa. Con el correr del tiempo, a medida que el país se fue integrando, estos estereotipos fueron perdiendo peso. En la actualidad es probable que las nuevas generaciones no hayan oído hablar de eso. Las culturas evolucionan, se integran y los prejuicios pasos a paso tienden a desaparecer.

Regional stereotypes

During my childhood there were stereotypes that talked about the different areas of the country. Those of us from the central part of the country were considered conceited and ostentatious. Westerners, especially those from the Andean areas, were considered slow and difficult to understand. The Easterners were thought of as joking and bellicose people. Over time, as the country became more integrated, these stereotypes lost weight. Nowadays, it is likely that the new generations have not heard about it.
