Mi post de hoy es para hablarles de mi pueblo natal La Sabana; queda ubicado en la Costa del Estado Vargas, (hoy Estado La Guaira) me gusta llamarlo así Vargas, por costumbre, por cultura, por amor. Pertenece a la Parroquia Caruao forma parte de un grupo de pueblos que se encuentran localizados entre montañas y playas al final de Los Caracas, lugar que da inicio a la entrada de este Paraíso Natural. Quiero dedicar este post a mi colega @evev quien me sugirió compartiera con ustedes y en esta comunidad la cultura de mi pueblo. Con mucho amor lo hice espero lo disfruten tanto como yo, al escribirlo.

My post today is to tell you about my hometown La Sabana; it is located in the Coast of Vargas State, (today La Guaira State) I like to call it Vargas, because of habit, because of culture, because of love. It belongs to the Parroquia Caruao and is part of a group of towns that are located between mountains and beaches at the end of Los Caracas, a place that starts the entrance of this Natural Paradise. I want to dedicate this post to my colleague @evev who suggested me to share with you and in this community the culture of my people. With a lot of love I did it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I wrote it.

Comenzando a subir en carro la montaña hacia la Parroquia Caruao; (la Costa como la llaman los habitantes de La Guaira) queda relativamente cerca de Caracas, (aproximadamente dos (2) horas) ciudad capital de Venezuela; el primer pueblo se llama Quebrada Seca, luego le sigue Osma, seguidamente Oritapo, después Todasana, Urama y para ir hacia La Sabana hay que desviarse hacia la izquierda. Si sigues en la carretera en línea recta está el pueblo de Caruao y San Jorge, luego Chuspa. Todos ellos forman parte del Estado La Guaira; aunque entre Caruao y Chuspa está ubicado Guayabal y ese pueblo pertenece al Estado Miranda. La distancia entre pueblos es de unos 20 o 25 minutos, quizás menos.

Beginning to climb the mountain by car towards the Parroquia Caruao; (the Coast as the inhabitants of La Guaira call it) is relatively close to Caracas, (approximately two (2) hours) capital city of Venezuela; the first town is called Quebrada Seca, then Osma, then Oritapo, then Todasana, Urama and to go towards La Sabana you have to turn to the left. If you continue on the road in a straight line you will find the town of Caruao and San Jorge, then Chuspa. All of them are part of the State of La Guaira; although between Caruao and Chuspa is located Guayabal and that town belongs to the State of Miranda. The distance between towns is about 20 or 25 minutes, maybe less.

Subir a la Costa es todo un espectáculo visual, ya que, se puede apreciar lo maravilloso de la naturaleza; esa mezcla de mar y montaña hacen la dupla perfecta, se pueden mirar y admirar paisajes hermosos dignos de fotografiarse una y otra vez, en diferentes ángulos; el aire que se respira, la energía que se siente y la conexión con la naturaleza es una sensación indescriptible; digna de repetir con frecuencia, ya que se siente y se respira una paz inquebrantable.

Going up to the Coast is a visual spectacle, since, you can appreciate the marvelous of nature; that mixture of sea and mountain make the perfect couple, you can look and admire beautiful landscapes worthy of being photographed again and again, in different angles; the air that you breathe, the energy that you feel and the connection with nature is an indescribable sensation; worthy of repeating frequently, since you feel and breathe an unbreakable peace.

La Sabana es un pueblo relativamente pequeño, tiene cuatro calles, una escuela, un liceo, un hospital, una iglesia, cuatro (4) plazas; entre ellas está la Plaza Bolívar, como en todos los pueblos de Venezuela, un cementerio, un estadio, una biblioteca, y algunos comercios. Tiene una rica variedad de cultura, gastronomía, bailes, mitos y leyendas, y celebraciones religiosas.

La Sabana is a relatively small town, it has four streets, a school, a high school, a hospital, a church, four (4) plazas; among them is Plaza Bolivar, as in all towns in Venezuela, a cemetery, a stadium, a library, and some stores. It has a rich variety of culture, gastronomy, dances, myths and legends, and religious celebrations.

Comencemos por lo religioso, el patrón es San José, el 19 de marzo el sabanero (así se le dice cariñosamente al gentilicio nacido en La Sabana) está de fiesta, honra y respeta ese día y al Santo que lo representa, cree en él ciegamente y le pide favores de todos sus proyectos de vida y sobre todo si hay problemas de salud. En la mañana se celebra la misa en la iglesia, otras veces la han realizado en la plaza Andrés Eloy Blanco por la cantidad de personas; ya que, no se da abasto la iglesia, en la noche es la procesión por todas las calles del pueblo.

Let's start with the religious, the patron saint is San José, on March 19 the Sabanero (this is how the people born in La Sabana are affectionately called) is on holiday, he honors and respects that day and the Saint who represents him, he believes in him blindly and asks him for favors from all his life projects and especially if there are health problems. In the morning mass is celebrated in the church, other times it has been held in the Andrés Eloy Blanco square because of the number of people; since, the church is not full, at night it is the procession through all the streets of the town.

También se celebra la Procesión del Nazareno, el Miércoles Santo es muy emblemática, ya que, simultáneamente salen dos procesiones al mismo tiempo, en una se lleva la imagen de la Virgen María y San Juan detrás de ella, van por una calle y por la otra llevan la imagen del Nazareno, por lo general en ésta siempre hay más personas porque pagan promesas y van vestidas igual al Santo. Cuando se encuentran en frente de la plaza hacen una danza con los santos y hay un redoblar de tambores que todos los asistentes gritan de emoción y miedo a la vez porque piensan que se van a caer los santos, pero no se caen. Nunca se han caído, desde niña siempre lo he visto y siento la misma emoción año tras año. Hay que verlo, para vivirlo.

The Procession of the Nazarene is also celebrated, on Holy Wednesday it is very emblematic, since, simultaneously two processions go out at the same time, in one the image of the Virgin Mary and San Juan are taken behind her, they go by a street and by the other they take the image of the Nazarene, generally in this one there are always more people because they pay promises and they go dressed equal to the Saint. When they find themselves in front of the square they do a dance with the saints and there is a drum roll that all those present shout with emotion and fear at the same time because they think the saints are going to fall, but they do not fall. They have never fallen, since I was a child I have always seen it and I feel the same emotion year after year. You have to see it, to live it.

El 24 de junio es el día de San Juan el Bautista, comienza la celebración el 23 en la noche, se prende una fogata para calentar los tambores, para ablandar el cuero y mejorar la acústica del sonido que emiten, toda la noche tocan; el día de San Juan hacen la misa la cual inicia entre las 10:00 y las 11:00 de la mañana, a las 12:00 una vez finalizada la misa es el primer toque del día como tal. En la puerta de la iglesia.

On June 24 is the day of San Juan el Bautista, begins the celebration on 23 at night, a fire is lit to heat the drums, to soften the leather and improve the acoustics of the sound they emit, all night long they play; on the day of San Juan they make the mass which begins between 10:00 and 11:00 in the morning, at 12:00 once the mass is over is the first touch of the day as such. Es una fiesta de mucho color, alegría, bailes y cantos. Cuando suenan esos tambores y especialmente el acompañamiento que le hace La Guarura (es el caparazón de un caracol grande, que quién lo sabe soplar; saca de él un agradable sonido), es mágico y parece que nos hipnotiza y se nos mete en la sangre y en el cuerpo y todos queremos bailar en la rueda, se hace una rueda donde solo bailan dos personas, un hombre y una mujer.

It is a party of much color, joy, dancing and singing. When those drums sound and especially the accompaniment that La Guarura makes (it is the shell of a big snail, who knows how to blow it; it makes a nice sound), it is magical and it seems to hypnotize us and gets into our blood and body and we all want to dance on the wheel, a wheel is made where only two people dance, a man and a woman.

Hay dos toques propios de La Sabana; el macizón y la perra. Todos coreamos en una sola voz: macizón dale, macizón dale, macizón dale... acompañado de un movimiento corporal lateral todos al mismo tiempo y en la misma dirección. Es un precalentamiento para el toque de la perra, que viene luego del macizón.

There are two typical touches of La Sabana; the massif and the dog. We all chant in one voice: macizón dale, macizón dale, macizón dale... accompanied by a lateral body movement all at the same time and in the same direction. It is a warm-up for the dog's touch, which comes after the chubby one.

Se celebra también la fiesta de la Virgen del Valle patrona de los pescadores, el 8 de septiembre. La noche anterior se le hace un velorio a la Virgen, donde se cantan décimas en su honor durante toda la noche hasta las 5:30 am; luego sale la calenda, es una especie de procesión pero con música de viento acompañada de trompetas y otros instrumentos, una vez había hasta piano, la gente baila y grita de emoción y alegría porque la música te atrapa; todas las personas que amanecieron en el velorio y otras que llegan especialmente a ese evento, vamos al compás de la música bailando por las calles del pueblo.

The feast of the Virgin of the Valley, patron saint of fishermen, is also celebrated on September 8. The night before, a wake is held for the Virgin, where tenths are sung in her honor throughout the night until 5:30 am; then the "calenda" (lit. "fireworks") comes out, it is a kind of procession but with wind music accompanied by trumpets and other instruments, once there was even a piano, people dance and shout with emotion and joy because the music catches you; all the people who dawned at the wake and others who come especially to that event, go to the beat of the music dancing through the streets of the town.

El baile termina en la playa donde esperan las lanchas decoradas con flores y palmas para pasear a la Virgen del Valle a los pueblos cercanos (Caruao y Chuspa). Durante el día se le hace una fiesta para los niños. En la noche a las 7:00 pm se hace la misa y luego la procesión.

The dance ends on the beach where the boats decorated with flowers and palms wait to take the Virgin of the Valley to the nearby towns (Caruao and Chuspa). During the day there is a party for the children. In the evening at 7:00 pm mass is held and then the procession.
