Welles was worried by the ratings. He knew that CBS would ditch his show if he did not find a big sponsor. And he would not get a sponsor if he did not gain more listeners. On the night before the play went on the air, the 3 men listened to tape of their work so far. They were not happy with it. Welles then said" Our only chance is to make it as realistic as possible"

The play began undramatically at 8pm. Listeners heard " The Columbia Broadcasting System and affiliated stations oresent Orson and his Mercury Theatre of the air in ' The War of the Worlds' by H G Wells....
