I’ve been trying to work out the timeline, since I don’t recall exactly when my obsession with recordable discs—yes, plastic discs—began. I believe most of the ones I own are Verbatim CD-Rs; back then, they were sold in bulk at every store and street-corner stall for very low prices.

However, buying them with their covers and already filled with content was a different story; the cost really added up because I always wanted to buy more and more and more.

Clearly, I couldn't control my consumerist habits, and I ended up accumulating a huge number of discs.
It all started when I became obsessed with Korean series sold on CD-Rs—since there was no other way to watch them in the country at the time. People bought countless plastic discs to keep themselves entertained on weekends, right up until the era of flash drives, hard drives, Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video arrived; the lifespan of those discs was left hanging in the balance, preserved only by those of us who still hold onto a few remnants of them.

And although, as I said, the specific year wasn't the most important thing, I remember exactly which series delivered that initial, Neanderthal-style blow to the head that hooked me for good: You're Beautiful.

From then on, I couldn't stop buying disc after disc. I organized them by genre, lead actors, and season—sorting the oldest from the newest, the most popular, the ones people borrowed, and the ones I swapped with others—driven by a frenzy unlike anything seen before in that context... a true global phenomenon.

My husband started out making fun of me, but he ended up sitting right beside me, completely engrossed in the palace intrigues of the period dramas. He’s constantly asking me to put on Moon Embracing the Sun—a real imperial gem.

I can also make some recommendations in case you ever want to perform an initiation ritual into the world of K-dramas—there’s nothing better than starting off on a high note. Of course, it also depends on the genre you prefer; right now, for action, we have Agent Kim Reactivated and That’s How You’ll Learn; for romance, The Perfect Crown; and for fantasy, Dead for Love.

We were a club of girlfriends constantly calling each other to ask about specific series—whether they were currently airing, if the soundtrack was out yet, where to buy it, or which ones to recommend—especially those with happy endings, since real life already gave us enough heartache.

In short, it was a kind of obsessive following that only true fans could understand.

Surprisingly, we also began to pick up a bit of Hangul and learned to recognize the names of the lead actors. We learned about the Joseon Dynasty and foods like kimchi, bibimbap, tofu, and tteokbokki; we discovered the traditional Korean hanbok dress, their beauty products, and their inspiring ways of bettering themselves through hard, steady work...

We used to struggle to tell the difference between Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Korean faces... but now it’s easy; we’re Level One experts...😊

And so, for years, I became an avid consumer of Korean dramas. I had no time limits when it came to sitting in front of the screen, breathing, crying, and laughing along with their romances, their sorrows, and the humor that we eventually came to understand.

I still cherish those discs deeply, not only because they entertained me—perhaps too much—but also because they taught me that my philosophy of life needed to change through hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance, and that it is always possible to fight for our dreams.

I also learned to be more selective and to better manage my time between my obligations and the Korean series I still enjoy to this day.

And even though others might judge them as frivolous or silly, my collection of Korean series is the best of the best.

Y aunque insisto, el año no fue lo más importante, sí recuerdo exactamente cuál fue la primera serie que me dió el estacazo del Nenthertal en la cabeza para darme el puntillazo inicial: Tú eres bella.

A partir de ahí, no paraba de comprar discos y más discos.Los organizaba por géneros, por protagonistas, por temporadas, las más antiguas, las más recientes, las más populares, las que me pedían prestadas, los que intercambiaba con otras personas, porque había una furia nunca antes vista en ese contexto...y fue un fenómeno mundial.

Mi esposo comenzó burlándose de mí y terminó sentado a mi lado absorto en las intrigas palaciegas de las series de época.A cada rato me pide que le ponga : La luna que abraza al sol, una verdadera joyita imperial.

También te puedo hacer algunas recomendaciones por sí alguna vez quisieras hacer un ritual de iniciación en este mundo de los kdramas, nada mejor que comenzar por todo lo alto, claro también depende del género que prefieras, ahora mismo tenemos para el género de acción: Agente Kim reactivado y Así aprenderás, para el romance: La corona Perfecta, y para el género fantasía: Muertos de Amor.

Existía como un club de amigas que nos llamábamos continuamente por teléfono para preguntarnos por una serie específica, sí estaba en emisión, sí ya estaba el primer disco, en cuál lugar estaba en venta, las que recomendábamos, las que tenían final feliz porque para amarguras ya teníamos suficientes con la vida real.

Así es que por años me convertí en un consumidor inconsciente de dramas coreanos.No tenía límites horarios para estar frente a una pantalla respirando, llorando y riéndome con sus amores, con sus tristezas y con su humor que finalmente lográbamos entender.

Los discos aún los guardo con muchísimo cariño, porque no solo me entretuvieron -tal vez demasiado- , sino porque también me enseñaron que mi filosofía de vida tenía que cambiar a través del trabajo duro, del sacrificio, de la constancia, y de que siempre se puede luchar por nuestros sueños.

También aprendí a ser más selectiva y a planificar mejor el tiempo entre obligaciones y series coreanas que al día de hoy continúo disfrutando.

This is so cool. We never forget those kind of obsessions do we? I never got into K-drama until very recently, and released how bloody good they were and how funny they could be. Still, I haven't watched many.

And there's something about something in the hands, too, right? You can touch and feel it and look at it as a permanent object instead of something digital that seems - ephemeral and transient perhaps. Like we love records and display them on the wall. The artwork is so cool.

Honestly, for me, K-dramas remain the best way to tune out the noise of the world we live in. I can only compare it to the pleasure I used to get from reading a book I’d been chasing after for a long time.

I swear, my collection of series is like my own little children. I keep them in a cool, dry place so the humidity doesn't damage them. And whenever I come across them in their drawer, I feel the urge to watch them all over again, as if for the very first time.

Yes, they remain my little treasures, and I keep them with pride. And the passion with which I hunt them down is pure fandom-girl energy... 😅

I highly recommend them—though I always pick the best ones, since, well, it takes all kinds to make a world.

That's a lot of CDs! 😃 Back in the day, I also had many CD-R disks in the house, mostly the ones I wrote, with movies I wanted to have forever (probably none of those work anymore... 😃), and others with family photos and backups...
I can't remember recording or buying TV series on CD, but it looks like you were an expert in that... hehhehe... Didn't follow any K-series, but I suppose they had many episodes... Would they come more on one disk, or 1 episode = 1 CD-R?

Hmm, you’ve touched on something really interesting and important: the urge to collect these series was precisely about having them with me forever. I loved them so much that the pleasure of knowing they were safe in my hands was priceless.

And yes, the series would sometimes span two discs depending on the number of episodes, so most of the time I had to buy two. Even though it cost me double, I felt like I could enjoy them for longer... it’s crazy.

I think that even after more than 15 or 18 years, they all still work and are in perfect condition... I’m so happy about that.
