Boooooooy, I knew I wanted to read this immediately I saw the title. No, I am not a loony, xd, but there's something that comes with queer people. I think there weird, "mad" people are actually the interesting ones, the ones that change the world. I like to think of myself same, not a crazy fella, :). I mean a weird person, erratic, yet upright. Also being the fact that its a diary makes it even more interesting. There is a beauty in peoples thought, what and how they think. A book is like living in an authors mind, but a diary is even better, delving even deeper into the bicker as well as concurrence in the writers life.
In this generation of constant activity and struggles, one might actually find it meaningful to keep a diary. Helps you look back at your old stuff and realize how much you've grown. Who knows, it might become a bestseller. Nikolai, the Russian short story writer actually pulled off quite the story with this one. At first, I actually thought this was a diary of the author, as I already had a premonition of what it would be about, but it turns out it is a world of fiction. Not that it mad it any less interesting.

Plot
The story circles around a low ranking civil servant as the protagonist, who leads us through his eyes through is typical daily level. Struggles cutting across every sphere of his life, from work, to home, to love life, and every single part of him. It rather seems that at each passing moment of the story, tje protagonist seems to be loosing is mind, and sometimes you just think to yourself, "this truly is a diary of a madman".
Setting
You never now if he is truly living in there or just hallucinating but, we can attribute majority of the activities to modern Russia.
Characters
There are fairly a lot of characters in the book, but the main ones are; Aksenty Ivanovich the protagonist, a titular councilor, who walks through his outlandish adventures and thoughts. The director who is his boss, and Sophie who is the daughter of his boss who he (Atkensy Ivanovich) fancies.
Purpose
Well, in my own opinion, I don't think there's much to this, but there are some underlining lessons to pick out from it. For one thing, its that one should learn to manage work and life. Juggling that balance is pertinent to ones sanity.
Fairly interesting, with a large bit of humor. I got lost in certain aspects of reading it, trying to make meaning of it, but I think thats what its a diary of a madman. Getting to the end, its actually quite sad and thought-provoking. There was part were he was in severe torture that he calls at his mum, heart-breaking. Should you read this? I think its leisure worthy.
