Timeline by Michael Crichton | Review

My love for time traveler stories strangely does not start with movies, and although at the time I read the book I am going to talk about today I had already seen movies like "Back to the future" I had not internalized how much I loved the subject. Of course, I'm not here to tell you about a wonderful literary masterpiece, in fact, it's a pretty simple but entertaining book: TIMELINE.

Mi amor por las historias de viajeros del tiempo extrañamente no empiezan con el cine, y aunque en el momento en que me leí el libro del que vengo a hablarles hoy ya había visto películas como "Volver al futuro" no había interiorizado en lo mucho que me encantaba el tema. Claro,tampoco es que vengo a hablarles de una maravillosa obra maestra de la literatura, de hecho es un libro bastante sencillo pero bastante entretenido: Rescate en el tiempo.

The Plot:

A group of archaeologists and historians travel back in time to the south of France, in the Dordogne, in the town of Castlegar, in the middle ages, to rescue their mentor, who was already suspicious of the ITC time travel laboratory. They get involved in a time when the Hundred Years' War is in full swing, in a time when many of the characters go around even with large and heavy armor. The way they travel through time is through the multiverse proposal, this theory of quantum physics that many of us science fiction lovers have heard at some point. Then the ITC creates a machine in which travelers are reduced to microparticles and are sent through time as if it were a fax message.

Un grupo de arqueólogos e historiadores que viajan en el tiempo al sur de Francia, en Dordoña, en la ciudad de Castlegard, en plena edad media para rescatar a su mentor, quien sospechaba ya del laboratorio de viajes en el tiempo ITC. Estos se ven envueltos en una época en que está en pleno desarrollo la guerra delos cien años, en un tiempo en los que muchos de los personajes va por ahí incluso con grandes y pesadas armaduras. La maneraen que viajan en el tiempo es a través de la propuesta del multiverso, esta teoría de lafísica cuánticaque muchos de los amantes de la ciencia ficción hemos escuchado alguna vez. Entonces la ITC crea una máquina en la que los viajeros son reducidos a microparticulas y son enviados en el tiempo como si de un mensaje de fax se tratara.

The Characters

The Author:

The author is better known than you might imagine, he was a successful science fiction writer. He was a doctor born in Chicago Illinois in 1942, and although he passed away in 2008, his legacy is invaluable, and not only in the world of literature but also in the world of film and TV. He was the Creator, producer, and writer of big hits like E.R on TV, and is the creator of one of the most impressive movies we have ever seen: JURASICC PARK, and along with the book: Harassment, he had at the time, the most successful book, TV show and movie at the time simultaneously. He was also a screenwriter for films such as Twister, another smash hit, and the hit series Westworld is based on one of the films he wrote and directed in the 70s.

El autor es más conocido de lo que se podrían imaginar, fue un exitoso escritor de ciencia ficción. Fue un médico nacido en Chicago Illinois en 1942, y aunque falleció en el 2008, su legado es invaluable, y no solo en el mundo de la literatura, sino también en el mundo del cine y la TV. Fue Creador, productor y escritor de grandes éxitos com E.R en la televisión, y es el creador de una de las más impresionantes películas que hemos visto jamás: JURASICC PARK, y junto con el libro: Acoso, tuvo en ese momento, el libro, el show de TV y la películas más exitosos en su momento simultáneamente. Fue guionista, además de películas como Twister otro exitazo, y la exitosa serie Westworld está basada en una de las películas que escribió y dirigió en los años 70.

I remember when I read the book around the year 2000, it was very new, fresh out of the oven, as who would say, and it was my entertainment for several days during the first semester of college, at that time I had no television, so every time I traveled home I brought half a suitcase loaded with books, that was a time that although cell phones already existed, there were no social networks, no youtube, or any streaming company, and there was no other way to have fun than the movies, television, or as in my case, books. This is one of the reasons why I treasure this memory as one of the most beloved, and although it is not one of the most famous, or the best books, I could easily give it a 6.5/10, so if you are bored and you ever come across this book out there, you can give it a chance, I assure you that you won't get bored.

Recuerdo que cuando leí el libro por el año 2000, estaba muy nuevo, recién salido del horno, como quien diría, y fue mi entretenimiento durante varios días en el primer semestre de la universidad, en esa época no tenía televisión, así que cada vez que viajaba a mi casa me traía media maleta cargada de libros, esa era una época que aunque ya existían los teléfonos celulares, no existían las redes sociales, ni youtube, ni ninguna empresa de streaming, y no había otra manera de divertirse que no fuera el cine, la televisión, o como en mi caso, los libros. Esta es una de las razones porlas que atesoro este recuerdo como uno de los más queridos, y aunque no es uno de los más famosos, o de los mejores libros, podría darle fácilmente un 6.5/10, así que si están aburridos y se topan alguna vez con este libro por ahí, pueden darle una oportunidad, les aseguro que no se van a aburrir.

Something quite curious about this book is that it has a movie adaptation that although I was looking forward to it, did not end up being the success that the story deserves. The movie has the same name and was directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) and here the most curious thing: it starred Paul Walker and Gerald Buttler. It was quite amusing to realize now that it was about them when they were real unknowns. (Don't waste your time watching the movie, it's not worth it).

Algo bastante curioso acerca de este libro es que tiene una adaptación al cine que aunque esperaba con mucho ahínco no termino siendo el éxito que se merece la historia. La película lleva el mismo nombre y estuvo dirigida por Richard Donner (Arma Mortal) y aquí lo más curioso: estuvo protagonizada por Paul Walker y Gerald Buttler. Fue bastante divertido darme cuenta ahora que se trataba de ellos, cuando en esa época eran unos auténticos desconocidos. (No pierdan su tiempo viendo la película, no vale la pena.)
