Dystopian Fiction: A Pessimistic Future to Open Your Eyes | (ENG) (ESP)

My experience with 1984 was a serendipity. I would be in my 20s when I read this work and since then it has been one of my biggest influences when it's about writing. It tells us the misfortune of a society that lives under the total control of its government, erasing parts of the history that are not convenient, changing the language so that people can be manipulated just by speaking or writing since in the novel it exists a crime of thought or crime of idea, indicating that freedom of expression is completely null, giving absolute control to the government not only of the economy and infrastructure but also of the minds that make up this society.

However, most people act like automatons and don't realize these facts except for our main character who begins to question himself many things and the result of this fact is a complete state of paranoia.

The novel tells us quite closely modern totalitarian societies as if it were a prediction or a prophecy due to the fact that the author lived through warlike experiences which made him have a pessimistic attitude towards the future.

Mi experiencia con 1984 fue una autentica serendipia. Tendría alrededor de 20 años al momento de leer esta obra y desde entonces ha sido una de mis mayores influencias a la hora de escribir. Nos narra las peripecias de una sociedad que vive bajo el control total de su gobierno, borrando partes de la historia que no son convenientes, cambiando el lenguaje de manera que las personas puedan ser manipuladas tan solo al hablar o escribir ya que en la novela existe un crimen de pensamiento o crimen de idea, indicándonos que la libertad de expresión es completamente nula, dándole el control absoluto al gobierno no solo de la economía e infraestructura sino de las mentes que constituyen esta sociedad.

Sin embargo la mayoría de las personas actúan como autómatas y no se dan cuenta de estos hechos a excepción de nuestro personaje que empieza a cuestionarse muchas cosas y el resultado de este hecho es un completo estado de paranoia.

La novela nos narra de manera bastante cercana sociedades totalitarias modernas como si fuese una predicción o una profecía debido a que el autor vivió experiencias bélicas lo que le hizo tener una actitud pesimista hacia el futuro.

On the contrary, A Brave New World is a novel that shows us manipulation doesn't necessarily have to be sharp and aggressive. Citizens of a society can live happily without even thinking that there is something wrong with it.

A Brave New World tells us about a society made by classes of humans where eugenics is a fact and science carried out in a wrong way assumes control of every aspect of society making a kind of scientific or technological fascism.

Artificial reproduction is a fact and mental manipulation from birth as well, creating an artificial stratification not only economic but also of leadership. For example the alpha subjects are in charge of directing while the Epsilon are in charge of doing heavy work but in an unconscious way. Citizens who are depressed for any reason are given a drug called soma which prevents any depression or melancholic state.

As we have seen the difference with 1984 is remarkable since this novel focuses its attention on manipulation in a subtle way and the previous novel in a more radical way.

There are also many parallels with this novel and our societies where consumerism acts like a drug and manipulation through social media, television and the internet is palpable.

La novela nos narra de manera bastante cercana sociedades totalitarias modernas como si fuese una predicción o una profecía debido a que el autor vivió experiencias bélicas lo que le hizo tener una actitud pesimista hacia el futuro.

En contra parte Un mundo Feliz es una novela que nos muestra que la manipulación no necesariamente debe ser de manera tajante y agresiva. Los ciudadanos de una sociedad pueden vivir de una manera feliz sin tan siquiera pensar en que hay algo de malo en ello.
Un mundo feliz nos narra una sociedad hecha por clases de humanos en donde la eugenesia es un hecho y la ciencia llevada de una manera errónea asume el control de cada aspecto de la sociedad creando una especie de fascismo científico o tecnológico.

La reproducción artificial es un hecho y la manipulación mental desde el nacimiento también, creando una estratificación artificial no solo económica sino de liderazgo. Por ejemplo los sujetos alfa son encargados de dirigir mientras que los Epsilon son encargados de hacer trabajo pesado pero de una manera inconsciente. Los ciudadanos que por cualquier circunstancia se encuentren deprimidos se les proporcionan una droga llamada soma la cual evita cualquier depresión o estado melancólico.

Como hemos visto la diferencia con 1984 es notable ya que esta novela centra su atención en la manipulación de manera sutil y la anterior novela de una manera más radical.

También hay muchos paralelismos con esta novela y nuestras sociedades en donde el consumismo actúa como una droga y la manipulación a través de redes sociales, televisión e internet es palpable.

In Farenheit 451 we meet a protagonist who is a firefighter and is in charge of burning subversive books. Yes, here the subject is books and how they can influence ideas of freedom that are not suitable for a totalitarian government.

Ray Bradbury's love books is notable in this play and as most novels in this genre are based on reality or fact, the burning of forbidden books is something that has occurred repeatedly in history, a clear example is the burning of books in Nazi Germany.

Our character begins to question whether the books are really good or not and why burning them could improve society. This makes us think that in a totalitarian government it is of vital importance to keep society subjugated under complete ignorance in this way people are more easily manageable and manipulated. Subversion is a crime and our main character begins to walk on these paths.

En Farenheit 451 nos encontramos con un protagonista que es bombero y se encarga de la quema de libros subversivos. Si, aquí el tema son los libros y como pueden influenciar a ideas de libertad que no son convenientes para un gobierno totalitario.

El amor de Ray Bradbury por los libros es notable en esta obra y como la mayoría de las novelas de este género se basa en la realidad o en un hecho, la quema de libros prohibidos es algo que ha ocurrido repetidamente en la historia, un claro ejemplo es la quema de libros en la Alemania Nazi.

Nuestro personaje empieza a cuestionarse si los libros son realmente buenos o no y porque el hecho de quemarlos podría mejorar a la sociedad. Esto nos hace pensar que en un gobierno totalitario es de vital importancia mantener subyugada a la sociedad bajo una completa ignorancia de esta manera las personas son más fácilmente manejables y manipulables. La subversión es un delito y nuestro personaje empieza a caminar en estos senderos.

The road is another excellent title that I can recommend. Raw, visceral and painful. It tells us about the vicissitudes of a father and his son after an apparent nuclear catastrophe. Human misery and our darker side are notable in this book. Survival at the cost of anything is what only cares but in the most vile and cruel way you can imagine. I must note that on an emotional level this is one of the books that has affected me the most.

Another good play is Neuromancer. Thanks to this novel, cyberpunk established itself as a literary genre and has been a strong influence on the anime Ghost in the Shell and the film Matrix. Here we find a decadent future but surrounded by high technology. The characters can plunge into cyberspace but the reality is decadent and miserable.

In this genre there are many things to say and to analyze and I hope to create a second part of this post soon. I have left many novels out like Snow Crash, The Windup Girl or Metro 2034 because I would like to re-read them to refresh those stories. I commented on those that have had a strong impact on me and that have been unforgettable. I hope that my experience has been useful to you and you want to get into this pessimistic literary genre but with the power to make us see everything we are doing wrong, giving us the possibility of making a change.

Después de estos títulos mencionados quería saber más del género que es una prueba de como un libro puede ser una clara premonición de nuestro presente. Me dedique a leer más títulos como El cuento de la criada, en donde el hombre ejerce un completo control sobre la mujer la cual solo cumple un papel reproductivo y de cuidadora.

La carretera es otro excelente título que puedo recomendar. Crudo, visceral y doloroso. Nos narra las vicisitudes de un padre y su hijo tras una aparente catástrofe nuclear. La miseria humana y nuestro lado más oscuro son notables en este libro. La supervivencia a costa de cualquier cosa es el fin más preciado pero de la manera más vil y cruel que puedan imaginar. Debo acotar que a nivel emocional este es uno de los libros que más me ha afectado.

Otro buen título es Neuromante. Gracias a esta novela el cyberpunk se asentó como un género literario y ha sido una fuerte influencia para el anime Ghost in the Shell y la película Matrix. Aquí nos encontramos con un futuro decadente pero rodeado de una alta tecnología. Los personajes pueden sumergirse en un ciberespacio pero la realidad es decadente y miserable.

De este género hay muchas cosas que decir y que analizar y espero pronto crear una segunda parte de este post. He dejado muchas novelas por fuera como Snow Crash, La chica Mecanica o Metro 2034 porque me gustaría echarles una relectura para refrescar esas historias. Comente las que han tenido un fuerte impacto para mí y que han sido inolvidables. Espero que mi experiencia les haya sido útil y se adentren en este género literario pesimista pero con el poder de hacernos ver todo lo que estamos haciendo mal dándonos la posibilidad de hacer un cambio.
