1984 is one of the most emblematic novels that came out in the 20th century and personally one of my favorites in social science fiction. We are facing a novel that perfectly defines the situation experienced by many countries with extreme repression, becoming a manual of totalitarianism, abuse, and brainwashing.

This is not a simple work that tries to tell us just a story. This novel is deliberately written to make us understand the processes that involve the submission and manipulation of a state towards its people, something that we can easily be observed in certain countries today.

1984 es una de las novelas más emblemáticas que salieron en el siglo XX y en lo personal una de mis favoritas en ciencia ficción social. Estamos ante una novela que define perfectamente la situación que vivieron muchos países con extrema represión convirtiéndose en un manual del totalitarismo, el abuso y el lavado de cerebro.

Esta no es una simple obra que nos intenta contar solo una historia. Esta novela esta premeditadamente escrita para hacernos entender los procesos que involucran el sometimiento y la manipulación de un estado hacia su pueblo, algo que podemos observar fácilmente en ciertos países en la actualidad.

Now Smith works changing historical data, faking documents but without being aware of it. Let us remember that the job of the State is to keep the citizens and specifically the proletariat under submission through all the ministries. Winston gradually realizes that something is not right with this whole system but he is terrified that just thinking about it could kill him. Ahora bien Smith trabaja cambiando datos históricos, falsificando documentos pero sin el tener consciencia de ello. Recordemos que el trabajo del Estado es mantener a los ciudadanos y en específico al proletariado bajo sumisión a través de todos los ministerios. Winston poco a poco se va dando cuenta de que algo no está bien con todo este sistema pero se encuentra aterrado porque solo el pensar en ello pudiera matarlo. En el Estado existen unos crímenes ficticios llamados crímenes de pensamiento, el solo en pensar en una traición o de que el Estado se equivoca de alguna manera pudiese ser motivo para encarcelamiento lo que per se es una falacia para mantener controlados a los ciudadanos.

Winston in turn meets Julia who also works at the Ministry of Truth and falls in love with her. As incredible as it may seem, the State prohibits any relationship of love and affection even in married couples for what both do is an act of rebellion. They are later caught and put in prison for disrespect of the law.

The amount of elements that this novel offers us is incredible. Apart from the ministries, we can observe things like Newspeak which is a language derived from English with certain forbidden words and other modified ones. The iconic character "Big Brother" is the ultimate symbol of power and the highest authority, however, we can never read about its existence and it is probably just an invention of those who are really in power to terrorize and manipulate the proletariat. His presence is omniscient, similar to that of a God, it can be found everywhere, from bills, coins, cigarettes, etc. but it has never been observed in reality.

Winston a su vez conoce a Julia quien trabaja también en el Ministerio de la Verdad y se enamora de ella. Por increíble que parezca el Estado prohíbe cualquier relación de amor y afecto incluso en parejas casadas por lo que ambos hacen es un acto de rebelión. Más tarde son pillados y puestos en prisión por desacato a la ley.

La cantidad de elementos que nos ofrece esta novela es increíble. Aparte de los ministerios podemos observar cosas como la neolengua que es un lenguaje derivado del inglés con ciertas palabras prohibidas y otras modificadas. El personaje icónico “El gran hermano” es el símbolo máximo del poder y la máxima autoridad sin embargo nunca podemos leer sobre su existencia y probablemente sea solo un invento de los que están realmente en el poder para aterrar y manipular al proletariado. Su presencia es omnisciente parecida a la de un Dios, se puede encontrar en todas partes, desde billetes, monedas, cigarrillos, etc pero jamás se ha podido observar en la realidad.

This aspect of reality is very important in the novel. The reality is what the State wants you to observe, there can be no more than that. If the state wants you to think that 2 + 2 equals 5, that will be your new reality. That's where the concept of doublethink comes from, an irony that makes people think that two contradictory ideas are the truth. An advanced manipulation and submission technique. Premeditated starvation is another heinous action these guys use to exert control.

The disintegration of the individual in favor of the fallacy and an autocratic idealism is one of the main concepts of the novel. The individual, freedom, and opinion are nonexistent and each person is just one part of a malevolent cog that destroys identity as a human being to feed a small group of people who exercise control.

Este aspecto de la realidad es muy importante en la novela. La realidad es la que el Estado quiere que observes, no puede haber más allá de eso. Si el estado desea que pienses que 2+2 es igual a 5, esa será tu nueva realidad. De allí viene el concepto doblepensar, una ironía que hace que las personas piensen en que dos ideas contradictorias son la verdad. Una técnica avanzada de manipulación y sumisión. La hambruna premeditada es otra acción atroz que estos sujetos usan para ejercer el control.

La desintegración del individuo en pro de la falacia y de un idealismo autocrático es uno de los principales conceptos de la novela. El individuo, la libertad y la opinión son inexistentes y cada persona es solo una parte de un engranaje malévolo que destruye la identidad como ser humano para alimentar a un reducido grupo de personas que ejerce el control.

Here we can see clear references to the Soviet Union, Nazism, and the Fascist dictatorship of Franco. That was the political climate of the time and this novel is a reflection of the darkness in which people lived in those times. For example, Nazi propaganda closely resembles the Ministry of Truth, and the famines that Stalin deliberately created in the Soviet Union resemble the ministry of abundance.

This is a visionary novel, a clear example of how to narrate the present and also create a manual for the future. Why do I say manual? Because most dictatorships do the same and George Orwell, the author of this novel, wrote almost with clairvoyance what would happen to other authoritarian states. These techniques have been used over and over again with impressive impudence, which is why it is said that one of humanity's greatest mistakes is forgetting history.

I consider this novel compulsory reading, as an act of rebellion for those who live in countries ruled by a dictatorship, to reflect and clarify our thinking and to never be bowed before any government that mistreats abuses, and tortures its citizens. It's been more than 10 years since I read this novel and it was a real blow to my mind, it opened my eyes with unprecedented shock. This is a fictional story but also a work that shows us reality and opens our eyes so that we try not to repeat history.

Aquí podemos ver claras referencias de la Unión Soviética, el Nazismo y la dictadura Fascista de Franco. Ese era el clima político de la época y esta novela es un reflejo de la oscuridad en que se vivía en esos tiempos. Por ejemplo la propaganda Nazi se asemeja mucho al Ministerio de la Verdad y las hambrunas que Stalin creo premeditadamente en la unión Soviética se parecen al ministerio de la abundancia.

Esta es una novela visionaria, un claro ejemplo de cómo narrar el presente y también crear un manual del futuro. ¿Por qué digo manual? Porque la mayoría de las dictaduras hacen lo mismo y George Orwell, el autor de esta novela, escribió casi con clarividencia lo que sucedería con otros estados autoritarios. Estas técnicas han sido usadas una y otra vez con un descaro impresionante, por eso se dice que uno de los mayores errores de la humanidad es olvidar la historia.

Considero esta novela de lectura obligatoria, como acto de rebelión para aquellos que viven en países gobernados por una dictadura, para reflexionar y aclarecer nuestro pensamiento y para nunca estar doblegados ante ningún gobierno que maltrate, abuse y torture a sus ciudadanos. Hace más de 10 años que leí esta novela y fue un auténtico golpe para mi mente, me abrió los ojos con una conmoción sin precedentes. Esta es una historia ficticia pero también una obra que nos muestra la realidad y nos abre los ojos para que intentemos no repetir la historia.
