Three stories of my tigers

Today we had a conversation at home in which a song and an old Venezuelan expression involving the tiger came up... This led me to remember three stories from my life linked to the same animal.

A Venezuelan tiger?

During the time I lived in Moscow, when I was very young, my best friend was a very cultured Peruvian, who knew a lot about history and geography, both Peruvian, Latin American and world.

Thanks to his vast knowledge (which forced me to study a lot to try to catch up with him) he often boasted about the deeds of the Peruvians, as well as the riches of his country, which sometimes made me feel the need to be able to boast about Venezuela. But I did not have enough information to do so.

For that reason, one day when I was telling the story of a tiger that stalked us on a trip to the interior of the country, he made fun of me saying that there couldn't be tigers in Venezuela. But the story I was telling was true to life and in my family there were many anecdotes with these animals. Faced with his incredulity, I checked with my dad, who confirmed the existence of these animals in Venezuela.

However, my friend never accepted it and that remained as a thorn in my side, which remained stuck in me for a long time.

Only many years later I could understand that we were both right. In Venezuela there are no tigers, as they are biologically defined. On the other hand, we do have jaguars and other felines, which are popularly called "tigers". Therefore, the stories in which we were threatened by tigers and so many stories and experiences with the tiger fauna, were real and dangerous, only they were not with the tiger species, but with one of its feline relatives.

For this same reason, two of the most popular characters of the Venezuelan popular culture, who in the tales of popular tradition represent two antagonistic positions that serve to express any situation are Uncle Tiger and Uncle Rabbit. The great writer Antonio Arráiz was able to capture part of these stories in his book of the same name.

An acclaimed tiger on this platform

Although this other tiger contains another story, it has already been told. With just a few days active on the platform, the old Steem, I wrote a post telling the story of What does it mean to "kill a tiger"?, in which I tell the story of one of the most popular expressions in Venezuela to refer to doing freelance work, or what today is called Freelance. If you haven't read it, I recommend it!

At that time one could publish a post in each language and the Spanish version received the vote of @Cervantes, which at that time was like winning the lottery in Spanish content.

And the English version, got the vote of none other than @ocd, although at that time the biggest economic contribution was made directly by @acidyo, but that already at that time represented a very high quality vote and a distinction.

At that time I had not been active ań even a month and it was like seeing the glory, because those were times when a post was hardly more than $ 0.10.

Those two votes I got with that tiger were a trigger for me to activate and commit more to this platform.

You want me to eat the tiger!

For this last part I saved what was the topic of conversation today. This phrase became very popular in Venezuela and Spanish-speaking countries in the late 1960s and responds to the popularity of a song by Colombian composer Eugenio García Cueto, entitled "Que me coma el tigre" (May the tiger eat me).

Eugenio, who worked as a cab driver, was inspired by the "dead-end" problems he constantly faced in his work with customers. The success, recorded by Duque Palomino's Combo, was such in Spanish-speaking countries that a number of versions of the same song soon appeared. In Spain it even inspired a movie called "El taxi de los conflictos" (The cab of conflicts), in which the Spanish star Lola Flores participated and sang the same song but with a flamenco rumba feel.

The expression "what you want is for the tiger to eat me" means that you leave me no alternative, that whatever option I propose, you will always find a counter.

The Colombian composer recreated that situation with the following lyrics:

What you want is for me to be eaten by the tiger
That the tiger eats me, that the tiger eats me
My brown meat

You want me to be eaten by the tiger
Let the tiger eat me, let the tiger eat me
My meat is good

What you want is for me to eat the tiger
Let the tiger eat me, let the tiger eat me

Tres historias de mis tigres

Hoy tuvimos una conversación en casa en la que salió a relucir una canción y una vieja expresión venezolana que incluye al tigre... Esto me llevó a recordar tres historias de mi vida vinculadas al mismo animal.

¿Un tigre venezolano?

Durante el tiempo que viví en Moscú, cuando era muy joven, mi mejor amigo era un peruano muy culto, que sabía muchísimo de historia y de geografía, tanto peruana, como latinoamericana y mundial.

Gracias a sus amplios conocimientos (que me obligaron a mí a estudiar muchísimo para intentar nivelarme con él) en muchas ocasiones presumía de las gestas de los peruanos, así como de las riquezas de su país, lo cual a veces me hacía sentir la necesidad de poder presumir de Venezuela. Pero no contaba yo con la suficiente información para lograrlo.

Por esa razón, un día que contaba yo la historia de un tigre que nos acechó en un viaje al interior del país, se burló de mí diciendo que en Venezuela no podían haber tigres. Pero la historia que yo contaba era vivencial y en mi familia habían muchas anécdotas con estos animales. Ante su incredulidad, verifiqué con mi papá, quien me confirmó la existencia de estos animales en Venezuela.

Sin embargo, mi amigo nunca la aceptó y eso quedó como una espina en mí, que siguió clavada mucho tiempo.

Solo muchos años más tarde pude entender que ambos teníamos razón. En Venezuela no existen tigres, tal como se les define desde el punto de vista biológico. En cambio sí tenemos jaguares y otros felinos, que popularmente son llamados "tigres". Por lo tanto, las historias en que nos vimos amenazados por tigres y tantos cuentos y vivencias con la fauna tigrera, eran reales y peligrosas, solo que no eran con la especie tigre, sino de uno de sus familiares felinos.

Por esa misma razón, dos de los personajes más populares de la cultura popular venezolana, quienes en los cuentos de tradición popular representan dos posturas antagónicas que sirven para expresar cualquier situación son Tío Tigre y Tío Conejo. El gran escritor Antonio Arráiz supo plasmar parte de esas historias en su libro homónimo.

Un tigre premiado en esta plataforma

Aunque este otro tigre encierra en sí otra historia, la misma ya fue contada. Con apenas unos días activo en la plataforma, la antigua Steem, escribí un post contando la historia de ¿Qué es eso de "matar un tigre"?, en el cuál cuento la historia de una de las expresiones más populares en Venezuela para referirse a hacer un trabajo por cuenta propia, o lo que hoy en día se denomina Freelance.

En esa época uno podía publicar un post en cada idioma y la versión en español recibió el voto de @Cervantes, que en aquella época era como ganarse la lotería en contenido en español.

Y la versión en inglés, obtuvo el voto nada más y nada menos que de @ocd, aunque para ese momento el mayor aporte económico lo hacía @acidyo directamente, pero que ya en ese entonces representaba un voto de muchísima calidad y una distinción.

Para ese momento no había cumplido yo aún ni un mes activo y fue como ver la gloria, pues esos eran tiempo en que un post difícilmente pasaban de $ 0.10.

Esos dos votos que conseguí con ese tigre fueron un disparador para yo activarme y comprometerme más con esta plataforma.

¡Tú lo que quieres es que me coma el tigre!

Para esta última parte guardé lo que fue el tema de conversación hoy. Esta frase se hizo muy popular en Venezuela y en los países de habla hispana a finales de los años 60 y responde a la popularidad de una canción del compositor colombiano Eugenio García Cueto, que llevaba por título "Que me coma el tigre".

Eugenio, quien trabajaba de taxista, se inspiró en los problemas "sin salida" que tenía que afrontar permanentemente en su trabajo con los clientes. El éxito, grabado por el Combo de Duque Palomino, fue tal en los países de habla hispana que pronto surgieron cantidad de versiones de la misma canción. En España llegó incluso a inspirar una película llamada "El taxi de los conflictos", en la cual participó la estrella española Lola Flores y cantó la misma canción pero con aire de rumba flamenca.

La expresión de "tú lo que quieres es que me coma el tigre" lo que significa es que no me dejas ninguna alternativa, que ante cualquier opción que yo plantee, siempre encontrarás una contra.

El compositor colombiano recreó esa situación con la siguiente letra:

Tú lo que quieres es que me coma el tigre

Mi carne morena
