Hoy les dejaré una breve reseña histórica de uno de los ambientes culturales icónicos de Caracas, se trata del Teatro Nacional. Espero sea de su agrado y desde ya les doy las gracias por su lectura, comentario y el apoyo que siempre han dado a mis publicaciones. Today I bring you a brief historical review of one of the iconic cultural environments of Caracas, it is the National Theater. La semana pasada, exactamente el día viernes 23 de julio de este año 2021, mi esposa y yo fuimos a pasear por el casco central de nuestra ciudad capital, Caracas y aprovechamos para visitar algunos sitios de interés histórico y de gran valor arquitectónico, iconos de la Venezuela del ayer que permanecen imponentes mientras pasa el tiempo y se presentan las vicisitudes propias de la vida. Al salir de la Basílica Santa Teresa caminamos una cuadra mas abajo y al estar entre las esquinas de Miracielos y Cipreses en la Avenida Lecuna de la Parroquia Santa Teresa, en el centro mismo de la ciudad de Caracas nos encontramos con esta joya arquitectónica llamada Teatro Nacional de Caracas el cual, y por disposición del entonces presidente de Venezuela General Cipriano Castro, comenzaron a construir el 23 de junio de 1904.

Last week, exactly on Friday, July 23 of this year 2021, my wife and I went for a walk through the central area of our capital city, Caracas and took the opportunity to visit some places of historical interest and of great architectural value, icons of the Venezuela of yesterday that remains imposing as time passes and the vicissitudes of life appear. When leaving the Basilica Santa Teresa we walked one block below and being between the corners of Miraíritu and Cipreses on Avenida Lecuna de la Parroquia Santa Teresa, in the very center of the city of Caracas we find this architectural jewel called National Theater of Caracas which and by order of the then president of Venezuela General Cipriano Castro began to build on June 23, 1904.
[ENG] Note that on the capitals there are giant masks that represent the tragedy and comedy performed by the maestro Miguel Ángel Cabré.

La obra fue encomendada al arquitecto venezolano Alejandro Chataing quien trabajó junto a su colega, el arquitecto Jesús María Rosales Bosques quienes, por cierto, un año antes habían sido los ganadores del Concurso abierto por el Ministerio de Obras Públicas el 4 de julio de 1903. Esta obra que fue entregada en menos de un año desde que se ordenó su construcción estuvo a cargo de los ingenieros E. Ocanto y Rafael S. Sordo. El responsable de la ornamentación del teatro fue el maestro Jiménez, notable ebanista de la época. El modelaje de la boca de escena con sus figuras alegóricas, es obra del artista Musbú Jacquin. El pintor Antonio Herrera Toro realizó la decoración pictórica del plafón, donde están representadas cuatro musas: Terpsícore (danza), Euterpe (música), Melpómene (tragedia) y Talía (comedia) Estos profesionales hicieron un trabajo extraordinario y en menos de un año entregaron la obra. El Teatro Nacional abrió sus puertas el 11 de junio de 1905 poniendo en escena la zarzuela “El Relámpago.“ Fue declarado Monumento Nacional según Gaceta Oficial nº 31.678 del 16 de febrero de 1979.

The work was entrusted to the Venezuelan architect Alejandro Chataing who worked together with his colleague, the architect Jesús María Rosales Bosques who, by the way, a year earlier had been the winners of the Contest opened by the Ministry of Public Works on July 4, 1903. This work that was delivered in less than a year since its construction was ordered, it was in charge of the engineers E. Ocanto and Rafael S. Sordo. The person in charge of the ornamentation of the theater was the teacher Jiménez, a notable cabinetmaker of the time. The modeling of the stage mouth with its allegorical figures is the work of the artist Musbú Jacquin. The painter Antonio Herrera Toro made the pictorial decoration of the ceiling, where four muses are represented: Terpsícore (dance), Euterpe (music), Melpómene (tragedy) and Talía (comedy) These professionals did an extraordinary job and in less than a year they delivered the work. The National Theater opened its doors on June 11, 1905, staging the zarzuela "El Relámpago." It was declared a National Monument according to Official Gazette No. 31,678 of February 16, 1979.

Una sola vez en mi vida he entrado al Teatro Nacional, y esta vez que fui lo encontré cerrado producto de la suspensión temporal de actividades por causa del Covid 19. Mi esposa y yo vamos a estar pendiente de su apertura para venir a disfrutar de algunos de los espectáculos culturales que se efectúan en ese maravilloso espacio. Lo poco que conozco el interior del teatro se que, como mencioné anteriormente su planta es rectangular y de tres niveles. El primer nivel cuenta con tres ambientes bien definidos por el vestíbulo, en el cual recientemente se descubrió la existencia de pinturas murales hechas por Herrera Toro que se han recuperado, según reciente información. Es un espacio cómodo y con muy buena acústica, de verdad muy acogedor.El patio o platea es de forma de herradura, y está destinado al área de sofá, balcón, galería y foso de orquesta. En el espacio de área escénica se encuentra el escenario; éste cuenta con su correspondiente tramoya, dos niveles de camerinos, y las escaleras internas metálicas en forma de caracol, también de reciente factura. En el segundo nivel están los corredores y la silletería; en el tercero se ubica la galería.

Only once in my life have I entered the National Theater, and this time I went I found it closed as a result of the temporary suspension of activities due to Covid 19. My wife and I are going to be awaiting its opening to come and enjoy some of the cultural shows that take place in this wonderful space. What little I know of the interior of the theater is that, as I mentioned earlier, its floor plan is rectangular and with three levels. The first level has three environments well defined by the lobby, in which the existence of mural paintings made by Herrera Toro that have been recovered was recently discovered, according to recent information. It is a comfortable space with very good acoustics, really very cozy.The patio or stalls is in the shape of a horseshoe, and is intended for the sofa area, balcony, gallery and orchestra pit. In the space of the scenic area is the stage; it has its corresponding section, two levels of dressing rooms, and internal spiral-shaped metallic stairs, also recently made. On the second level are the corridors and the seating; in the third the gallery is located.
