Architecture and Urbanism: In architecture, is the client always right? Yes... and No

Source

The famous phrase ‘the client is always right’ , in architecture is a two-edged sword. Although we work for a clients who hires us, that is not why we have to do everything they tells us, and I do not mean that architects get picky about what they want or not to do, but the fact that there are things that by law are not allowed or are not the most convenient for the project, for the environment or for the clients themselves, although they are sometimes not fully aware of it, and they do not have to be, that is why they hire an architect.

Part of the work of an architect is to guide his/her clients, always in favor of their interests, although this implies not infrequently, to be contrary to them. If he asks you for a huge window right where the sun sets in the afternoon, it would be irresponsible to put it just because the client asks for it, even knowing that in the afternoon the sun will turn that piece of the project into a small oven. If the client wants a building with avant-garde architecture but his property is in an area of historical value, it is not such a good idea, and just like these we could list many more examples.

In architecture, more than pleasing the client, we must help them realize their dreams in the best possible way, always taking into account their economy, their needs and their future plans, but also respecting the existing regulations, the site where the project will be built, and the impact that this may cause in its immediate context.

In conclusion, in architecture the client is not always right, because the responsibility of the architect is not only due to him/her, but also to the city and those who inhabit it, and will inhabit it in the future. But he/she, at the same time, does have it, because the client is entrusting us with his dreams and the savings of years of work to make them come true, and our obligation is to help him/her achieve that goal with the best of our abilities and knowledge.

I hope that this brief explanation has not been confusing, since the subject has many edges, but that is the beauty of a profession like architecture, a profession that more than a job, it is a vision of life.

I agree with this statement. Clients may have the right to dictate what the project entails, but design professional has the right and responsibility to make sound suggestion that adheres to standards and the law. Your presented arguments are valid and interesting to ponder. !PIZZA

As someone building a new house this post really resonated with me. Oh my! Trying to fit everything into our budget while working with our designers and architects. We just have driven them mad!

So many barriers at the moment but we're almost there at the start of our build!

All that madness is part of the process, do not worry hahaha, the important thing is that there is good chemistry between the client and the architect, so that things flow well, and the unavoidable unforeseen events can be faced in any project.

Congratulations, and I'm sure your home will be as you always dreamed of at the end!
