¡Bienvenidos una vez más a Play These Vibes!✨ Una sección donde comparto con ustedes un poquitito de mis gustos musicales, esto con la intención de dar a conocer artistas emergentes, abordar diversos géneros y que juntos disfrutemos del maravilloso regalo que es la música 🎧
Esta semana vengo con una lista de Jazz Fusión de los 70, esto motivado a que en el canal de Radio Buxo hicimos un especial sobre la década de los setenta y por mi parte quise aportar una selección relacionada al jazz 🎷

This week I come with a list of Jazz Fusion of the '70s, this motivated by the fact that in the Radio Buxo channel we did a special about the seventies and for my side, I wanted to contribute a selection related to jazz 🎷
Elegí el Jazz Fusión porque me parece que tiene un equilibrio que permite acercar el jazz a personas que no están acostumbradas a escucharlo 🤷🏻♀️, aunque también existen los artistas que experimentan mucho y por el contrario, se alejan de todo esquema creando música bastante peculiar, como Frank Zappa por ejemplo, mi intención con esta lista es que sea amena para personas que no suelen escuchar jazz, así que no incluí piezas muy rebuscadas 😉.
Como es costumbre en Play These Vibes voy a comentarles sobre mis cinco temas favoritos del playlist, acá debajo les dejo tanto el link para escucharlo en Spotify como en Youtube. Espero las escuchen con mente abierta y que lo disfruten. ¡Comencemos!.
I chose Jazz Fusion because I think it has a balance that allows bringing jazz closer to people who are not used to listen to it 🤷🏻♀️; although it also has its artists that experiment a lot and instead, they move away from any scheme creating quite peculiar music, like Frank Zappa for example, my intention with this playlist is to make it enjoyable for people who don't usually listen to jazz, so I didn't include too many tricky pieces 😉.
As usual in Play These Vibes I'm going to tell you about my five favorite songs of the playlist, here below I leave you the link to listen to it in Spotify and Youtube. I hope you listen to them with an open mind and you enjoy it. Let's start!

The Mahavishnu Orchestra - Meeting of Spirits
The Mahavishnu Orchestra fue una de las agrupaciones pioneras del jazz-fusión. Esta banda liderada por John McLaughlin nació en la ciudad de Nueva York en 1971 y obtuvo popularidad debido a la complejidad de su música y la fusión que hacían entre jazz y rock psicodélico; además, el nivel de ejecución de cada músico es impecable.
Personalmente no me puedo creer que sus canciones fueran de los setentas, opino que la música que hacían estaba adelantada para su época y me resulta súper envolvente y cargada de energía. En el playlist incluí los temas Dawn, You know you know y Meeting of Spirits (mi favorita), todas pertenecen a su primer álbum The Inner Mounting Flame.
The Mahavishnu Orchestra was one of the pioneering jazz-fusion groups. This band led by John McLaughlin was born in New York City in 1971 and gained popularity due to the complexity of their music and the fusion they made between jazz and psychedelic rock; besides, the level of execution of each musician is impeccable.
Personally, I can't believe that their songs were from the seventies. I think that the music they made was ahead of its time, I find it super involving and full of energy. In the playlist I included the songs Dawn, You know you know y Meeting of Spirits (my favorite), all of them belong to their first album The Inner Mounting Flame .
Robin Kenyatta - The Need to Smile
La intro de The Need to Smile me fascina; el ostinato del bajo acompañado del teclado con sonoridad de vibráfono, junto con la batería que redobla constantemente en los platillos crean una atmosfera de apertura y una sonoridad espacial muy atractiva, que hasta provoca samplear y crear un hip hop con ella 😅.
Este es un tema largo, bastante atmosférico y matizado, compuesto por el saxofonista Robin Kenyatta 🎷. Este hombre durante los años setenta fue toda una máquina de composición, en tan solo una década realizó 8 álbumes para su proyecto solista. The need to smile pertenece a su séptimo álbum de estudio Stompin' at the Savoy de 1974.
The intro of The Need to Smile is fascinating to me; the ostinato of the bass accompanied by the keyboard with a vibraphone sound, together with the drums that constantly roll on the cymbals create an atmosphere of openness and a very attractive spatial sound, which even provokes sampling and creating a hip hop with it 😅.
This is a long track, quite atmospheric and nuanced, composed by the saxophonist Robin Kenyatta 🎷. This man during the seventies was a composition machine in only one decade he made 8 albums for his solo project. The need to smile belongs to his seventh studio album Stompin' at the Savoy from 1974.

Weather Report – Havona
En Havona la esencia jazz se siente por doquier; al principio tenemos unos sintetizadores un poco futuristas y espaciales, casi como si estuviésemos por escuchar un vaporwave, pero en su lugar la atmosfera cambia con la entrada del swing en la batería que nos lleva a una pieza de jazz fusión donde el bajo y el saxofón juegan un papel predominante.
Havona forma parte del álbum Heavy Weather, que por cierto, en la alineación de este álbum se encuentra el maestro del bajo: Jaco Pastorius.
In Havona the essence of jazz is felt everywhere; at first, we have some futuristic and spacey synths, almost as if we were about to listen to a vaporwave, but instead, the atmosphere changes with the entrance of the swing on the drums, getting into a piece of jazz fusion where the bass and the saxophone play a predominant role.

Havona is part of the album Heavy Weather, which by the way, in the line up of this album is the master of the bass: Jaco Pastorius.

Bruford - The Abingdon Chasp
Bill Bruford es un baterista, productor y compositor inglés que consiguió tener mucho reconocimiento por haber sido baterista no de una, sino de tres bandas importantes del rock progresivo: Yes, King Crimson y Génesis 🥁. Luego de pasar por ellas formó su proyecto Bruford.
En One of a Kind, el segundo álbum de su proyecto como líder, encontré el tema The Abingdon Chasp, una composición con cambios muy variados; la primera sección lleva la melodía principal en el bajo, luego esta pasa al teclado mientras un groove de batería ¡que me encanta! le acompaña; más adelante encontramos una sonoridad alegre con aires latinos, pasando a un solo de guitarra en un ambiente de rock progresivo. Una canción con atmosferas muy diferentes, pero por algo esto es llamado fusión 😅.
Bill Bruford is an English drummer, producer, and songwriter who got a lot of recognition for being the drummer of not one, but three important progressive rock bands: Yes, King Crimson and Genesis 🥁. After passing through them he formed his project Bruford.
In One of a Kind, the second album of his project as a leader, I found the song The Abingdon Chasp, a composition with very varied changes; the first section has the main melody on the bass, then it goes to the keyboard while a drum groove, which I love! accompanies it; later on, we find a happy sound with Latin airs, moving to a guitar solo in a progressive rock atmosphere. A song with very different atmospheres, but that's why it's called fusion 😅.

Herbie Hancock - It thought it was you
La primera vez que escuché It thought it was you inmediatamente pensé en Daft Punk; puede sonar un poco raro si no has escuchado la canción aun pero si la reproduces vas a comprender esta correlación 😉
El tema de Herbie Hancock esta constituido de una base disco, una melodía pegajosa y armonías jazz, además posee un efecto muy particular en la voz hecho con un Sennheiser Vocoder VSM201, tanto Herbie como Daft Punk han utilizado este Vocoder, pero existen menos de 100 ejemplares de este modelo 😮.
It thought it was you forma parte de Sunlight, un excelente álbum que recomiendo escuchar completo.
Bonus Track: Watermelon Man del álbum Head Hunter, un clásico de Herbie.
The first time I heard It thought it was you I immediately thought of Daft Punk; it may sound a little strange if you haven't heard the song yet but if you play it you will understand this correlation 😉

Herbie's song is made up of a disco base, a catchy melody, and jazz harmonies, it also has a very particular effect on the voice made with a Sennheiser VSM201 Vocoder, Herbie and Daft Punk have used this Vocoder, but there are less than 100 units of that model 😮
It thought it was you is part of Sunlight, an excellent album that I recommend listening to in full.

¡Que increíble esta música y que increíble tu post! Mis temas favoritos fueron de The Mahavishnu Orchestra y Herbie Hancock. Tienes razón, The Mahavishnu Orchestra suenan adelantados para su época, no pareciera posible poder hacer algo así en esa época y más con esa calidad de sonido, impresionante. Y sobre el tema de Herbie, me llama la atención lo mucho que pudo haber influenciado a la música de hoy, hay muchos elementos que se siguen escuchando en hits en la actualidad. El playlist hace honor al titulo, no soy jazzista ni escucho ese genero musical en mi día a día, pero me gustó mucho lo que compartes aquí. Gracias por compartir todo esto.

Que interesante lo que me dices sobre los elementos que siguen presentes hoy en día en los hits, yo solo noté algunas cositas como el sonido del Vocoder porque apenas lo escuché pensé en Daft Punk, y bueno al investigar mi intuición tuvo razón en que era el mismo sonido 😅 pero imagino que a nivel de producción debe de haber muchos mas elementos.

Sin duda alguna a esta publicación, como a las otras que has publicado y he tenido el honor de leer, le has dedicado mucho tiempo y atención, y debo decir que la excelencia es algo raro en estos días. Y sí, me gusta el jazz, me parece un género muy bello y completo (también amo al rock), y no tiene nada que ver con la cosa extraña que hoy día se oye, llamada reguetón, que ni melodía, ni letras, ni calidad vocal tiene. Voy a oír el play list y luego te doy mi opinión. Saludos.
