When you are overcommitted to strike and hit your opponent, it might do more harm than good. Sometimes we do something because of anger or emotions. When you get angry, you feel like you have some extra power. That's just a feeling.
The thing is, you might do something due to anger that you should not do. You cannot think clearly at that time. Maybe you become desperate to strike and hit the attacker. So you move forward and get close to the attacker without thinking anything. The attacker can take advantage of the situation when you cannot think clearly and attack you.
During the fight, the attacker punches or kicks you. And you get hurt. When you get hurt, you might become desperate to strike the attacker immediately. Again as soon as you become desperate to strike, you usually make some moves that can make you vulnerable.
The attacker can trick you and intentionally make you desperate to strike him. It would be easier for him to find your weakness and exploit that. Have patience although it seems hard sometimes. And if you fight for self-defense, please do not do something driving by ego and emotions.
You do not need to keep fighting until it is proved that you are the winner. You are fighting to survive, not to become a winner unless you fight in a fighting competition. Think about what would be best to protect yourself and get out of there. You will find a way to defend yourself.
