That song! Completely forgot that that even exists. Didn't like the movie either that much.
It baffles me to this day what anyone saw in it and why it's called a classic
I guess it does represent that time period well. But I don't know if I would have been an adult or even a teenager at the time when it was made and showed at the movie theaters if I would have thought that it was a good film. But watching it 20 to 40 years later, the story isn't that special. And although many films that were special and novelties when they aired but aren't that anymore, still are really good, Saturday Night Fever in my opinion isn't one of them. But I sure do admire the dance moves of that time. What was cool then is just so weird today. But I get it. I get it although I'm just wondering that do disco dance moves deserve that much praise because there are other dance styles that have silly moves but still do not look that silly. Like Lindy Hop.
The movie is nothing compared to many silent films that are still excellent and captivating. My favorite actor from that time period is Buster Keaton. Although the storyline or the slapstick comedy may be old stuff now, but it's far more better done than the weary and old jokes and slapstick comedy made nowadays. Now it's mostly just pathetic. But it may be that I'm bias because I love silent movie era. And well done slapstick comedy or movies that have the same vibe like in slapstick movies. Talent, choreography, good timing and professionals showing what human body can do. Like Jackie Chan fighting.
...buuuuuut long story short, Travolta in that movie could be seen like the cocky version of disco dancing Jackie Chan. :D My deep analysis of the year.
It was made in 1977, so I'd have barely been walking! I think you're right, in that it was more representative of the time. However, I also think they storyline was as much about the lives of the poorer ethnic youth as the dancing, yet for many it's only the dancing that's really remembered. It was the rape scene with Annette that really unsettled me and there was plenty of other violence too. When you're expecting something like Footloose or Grease, it's rather unsettling.
I've seen very little of the silent movies, but wouldn't mind watching some Buster Keaton. I gather he was quite acrobatic in his slapstick. Jackie Chan is a favourite of mine. I loved his early ones with Sammo Hung, too. The Armour of God was probably my favourite from back then.
Talking of older movies which have aged well, we're currently watching the Terminator series with my youngest (who is 17, before you condemn us 😉). The first shows its age a little with the early CGI or animation part, but it's still good. The Alien movies are still excellent as well.

I can only imagine how it would be really unsettling to find out the movie wasn't just a light afternoon entertainment. It's so ironic that some do only remember it as a dance movie since it really seemed to picture the time well. (So they say in the movie reviews. People who know what it was like to live there back then.) Perhaps it was because of that that it got such good praises long after. So if people do not remember it being anything else than a dance movie, isn't it somewhat the movies fault that it's real message was forgotten? It wasn't good enough.
Personally I would have wanted the plot to be a little bit thicker. More. Better.
Thank goodness for YouTube, there's so much silent movies, short and long available nowadays, also Buster Keaton, that a good hour or two... days can be spent with them. :)
I love the first movies of Terminator and Alien. The next ones after that aren't as good, some are perhaps even bad or just boring, but the first ones are really good.
First and second Aliens were great! They got a bit weird after that. I'd say the same for the first and second terminators. Then they get a bit disjointed because the actors for the characters keep changing after that and they had to try and undo the conclusion for the second. I'm still enjoying the films, just not as much as the first two. I'm also curious about the 6th, because they bring Sarah back with the original actress.
