Johann Sebastian Bach, first half of third movement, Triosonate nr 2 | Secrets of Organ Playing Contest, week 128

This is my entry for the Secrets of Organ Playing Contest, week 128. I play the third movement of Bach's second Triosonate in c minor, BWV 526. Well, I play about the first half of that third movement.

I fear this Triosonatas are actually a bit beyond my technical reach. However fun it is to play them, it takes me hours and hours of practise to master even one movement of them. My goal of learning all 6 of them may turn out to be a bit too ambitious. Nevertheless, for now I continue stubbornly, and who knows, I might succeed in the end.

This third movement is about the hards of the movements I've played so far. I started with the fifth triosonate, then went on to the first and now to the second. The first two movements are not easy, yet in time, I think I can play them well. I'not so sure about this third movement.

In the transcrption I made from the manuscript source it takes 6 pages. I can now play the first 4 of them in a rather slow tempo. The last two pages are going to take me another one or two weeks. And then I have to speed it up a bit, so it reaches concert tempo. Though I know of at least one performance where it is played during a concert in the same practice tempo I use in my performance today (see here:

After three weeks of hardly playing anything else, this is where I am now: four pages in slow tempo. As this contest is all about stimulating organists to practise, I think it is in line with that goal, to not only show 'finished products', but also works in progress.

The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Klapmeyer organ in the St. Nikolai church in Altenbruch (https://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/germany/klapmeyer-organ-altenbruch.html).

Very impressive. My brain has enough trouble dealing with 2 staves these days. Adding a third would be beyond me I think. Well done! 😊

You will learn this movement sooner than you think. I was surprised at myself too. I was very scared of this movement but my 10 step method helped me.
