gribbles record collection listening chain #5

(Edited)

My record collection listening chain is a series of occasional posts working through my 7" single collection (and maybe other records as well). The general idea is that I started by posting about the first record in my collection, then asked readers to reply, choosing a number from 1 to 100. I would then choose someone at random, and count on from the last record posted about by the number they have chosen and post about that record. Then we'll rinse and repeat until we get bored! I reward the lucky winner by delegating 100 HP. I'm going to aim to do these fortnightly from here on in, so that's 100HP for two weeks (minimum). If these get more popular, then I may up that, but we'll see... Also, for a limited time, if the winner is a Rising Star player, then I'll chuck 'em an instrument card as well...

So, it was @cookaiss who was chosen this week, and they had replied with the number 32. So the 32nd single on from People are People by Depeche Mode moves us well into the 'F's. We scooted past John Foxx, but stopped just short of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Which puts us at The Frank Chickens with a double A side. Fujiyama Mama as the A side, and We Are Ninja on the AA.

Oh boy - if you've not come across these ladies before you are in for a treat.

I had to have a bit of a think where I came across this first. I know it came out in 1984, and I think I remember someone bringing it into the 6th form common room. that would have been the Upper 6th (as it was then, Year 13 now). But the timing would have been tight.

I also remember John Peel playing Frank Chickens, and they just seemed to pop up here and there. Late night video shows. But again I think that was later on. It's weird, this is one of those records that I seem to have always had. And I know I used to delight in introducing folk to it and just watching the expression on their face!

I do also remember a strange celebrity Karaoke that they hosted on TV, but that was definitaly later on. Late 80s, maybe. But at a time when weird or quirky stuff used to appear later on in the schedule, this was actually early evening.

Anyway, as far as we were concerned it was all about 'We Are Ninja'. A beautifully scatty, slice of Anglo/Japanese fun. Frank Chickens were as much a performance piece as a career band, and 'ninja' shows that. But, by crikey, it has a catchy chorus. Earworm material.

See what you think...

Isn't it just glorious? 😄

So, there y'go. It's been a right mix so far hasn't it? Who knows what may come up next? Help us find out by replying and choose a number from 1 to 100. You could turn up a cracker of a record and win 100 delegated HP for a couple of weeks and a Rising Star instrument card.

If you don't already play Rising Star, I heartily recommend it. It's loads of fun and the community around it is great! Here's a handy link to join with --> https://www.risingstargame.com?referrer=gribbles

I remember the name from back in the day. I was not a big John Peel listener, but maybe I caught them on his show.

I was thinking that maybe we need a vinyl community. Got a few people posting about it. There are some old ones that are inactive.

Ah - never though of looking. Good call.

I'll have a dig and probably start cross-posting...

A new community may be better as whoever makes it can take the rewards. I have created others. I think ones like Music are too generic to get real engagement.

That's an interesting one. 80s disco instrumentals are not that much different to what I know. The singing part becomes already a little out of the ordinary for someone from Europe like I. The video: Looks almost one created a decade earlier when the first music videos were being produced. All in all an enjoyable track :)

Basically, folk reply to my post with a number between 1 and 100. Every couple of weeks (or so), I choose one at random, then count on in my collection by that amount and write about that record. Rinse & repeat until we all get bored 🙃

As an incentive for folk to reply, I also delegate 100 Hive Power (HP) to the winner for a couple of weeks. This means that that person earns a bit more from upvoting posts while that HP delegation is in place.

Due to do the next blog this coming Monday...

I had a good chuckle at these guys now. Haven't heard the track before or of these crazy chickens. With 250k views in 14 years I'd say they a well kept secret. I can see why it would be popular in the era it was released.

My favourite was the gozilla lurking in the background. Now these guys are ninjas.

Also, my number will be 48!

I have 25 years old and this isn't the style of music I usually listen to. But I have to recognize that it sounds bizarre and amazing.

My number will be 17

It's very different isn't it? I think it's always good to step outside what you normally listen to now and again... :)

Thanks for replying and for the number. Good luck!
