gribbles record collection listening chain #2

(Edited)

My record collection listening chain is a series of occasional posts working through my 7" single collection (and maybe other records as well). The general idea is that I started by posting about the first record in my collection, then asked readers to reply with a random number from 1 to 100. I would then choose someone at random, and count on from the last record posted about by the number they have chosen and post about that record. Then we'll rinse and repeat until we get bored! Oh, and I also chuck in a 5 Hive SBI reward to the chosen poster as a 'thank you for playing'!

So, without further ado, thanks to @quinnertonics today we're looking at the 33rd record in my collection after Abba's Take A Chance on Me - and it's...

The Beautiful South with Old Red Eyes Is Back (with Fleet St B.C. on the b-side)

Released in 1991, it got to number 22 in the UK charts

I always enjoy a bit of the The Beautiful South - always been a fan of Paul Heaton from Housemartins days, through to the recent stuff with Jacqui Abbot. Awesome lyricist and a lovely voice to boot.

I've seen him live a couple of times. Once with The Beautiful South at Glastonbury in 1999, and more recently at a forest gig at Sherwood Pines with Jacqui. Both great - loads of fun.

If you get the chance to see Paul & Jacqui when things finally start to crank up again, I'd strongly recommend it. There's such a rich back catalogue of songs that you'll not only be surprised at how many you remember, but also how many you will sing along to as well!

A little bonus to this one (possibly). I have been known to pick up a guitar and bash it about a bit, as long as the chords don't get too fancy. This is one of the songs I have played in the past and can just about sing. I'll give it a go and if it's not too much of a disaster (I'll be super rusty!), I might treat you to a video of me screeching over the top of a 12-string. You lucky people.

So there you go. If you want to have the chance of choosing the next in the series (and also winning 5 Hive SBI), then reply to this post with your supremely flattering compliments and a number from 1 to 100. I'll choose a random reply to inform the next post in a few days...

a forest gig at Sherwood Pines

WOOHOO.... you've been to a concert in the woods! Must have been great.
I do like out of the ordinary festivals and heard good stories about Glastonbury, but never made it. Have the feeling its to commercial these days.

A little bonus to this one (possibly)

Do It! But I also understand you want t o reserve the right not to share your attempts.

a number from 1 to 100

42

supremely flattering compliments

Am not very good at that; Need some auto AI powered generator for that. Didn't find one yet. You know any? :)

Yeah - the forest gig was really cool. Lovely setting for a night of good music.

And I think you're right about Glasto - it was OK, but having done it once, I didn't feel the urge to do it again. I've much preferred the smaller boutique festivals that started to pop up.

Thanks for submitting a number - hopefully we'll get a few more folk joining in...

Oh, and the guitar thing has happened. It is uploading as I type. Be afraid 🤣

Be afraid 🤣

🤣🤣🤣 but don't, I wasn't!

guitar thing has happened

Noticed it, watched it, and gave you some extra motivation.... I hope at least :)
You got one of the most active HIVE users to check your guitar work (steevc), so thats perfect!

Owwww I do so much as well. Though even the big festivals can have its nice corners. A few years ago someone told me he had a great time at Glastonbury, but he mentioned: One needs to search a bit and go away from the main areas. In dance music land we have this massive festival 'Mysterland' near Amsterdam. Just another of those festivals where really cool corners are found, with tiny stages, art and all. Been visiting that one for years, always avoiding all the more 'commercial' and mainstream/mass stuff, but having great fun at places the mass didn't detect.

Indeed.

Someone once said to me "Mainstream is about the spectacle, indie is about the people"

Feels right.

Okay I'll start with the random Number 73.
I'm glad you picked the guitar up and performed Ole red eyes. I only have two of their CD's, but I do enjoy them and their music. I don't think I have ever heard the Perfect 10 song, so that was a nice bonus.
