¿Qué es Soulseek?

Primero, un poco de historia

Soulseek es un programa de PC (totalmente gratis) y una red p2p creada allá por el año 1999 por Nir Arbel (ex programador de Napster).
Originalmente fue un punto de encuentro para seguidores de la música electrónica underground, pero con el tiempo se fueron integrando más personas, y con ellas, más generos musicales.

La red fue ganando una relativa fama dentro del círculo melómano, pues allí se reunían personas que sabían de música, y con las cuales se podía debatir, y recomendar o incluso intercambiar discos.

En definitiva, gente como uno.

What is Soulseek?

First, a little bit of history

Soulseek is a PC program (totally free) and a p2p network created back in 1999 by Nir Arbel (former Napster programmer).
Originally it was a meeting point for fans of underground electronic music, but over time more people joined, and with them, more musical genres.

The network was gaining a relative fame within the melomaniac circle, because people who knew about music met there, and with whom it was possible to discuss, recommend or even exchange records.

Y... ¿Cómo funciona?

Soulseek es similar a otros programas con red p2p. Para que se den una idea más exacta, su funcionamiento es bastante parecido a eMule.
Los usuarios tienen sus carpetas compartidas, a las cuales otros usuarios pueden acceder y descargar contenido. Aclaro que no solo se puede compartir audio, sino varios tipos de archivos, pero la enorme mayoría solo comparte y busca música.

• Hay que tener en cuenta que algunos usuarios no permiten que descargues de sus carpetas, si tú no estás compartiendo nada.
  Es lógico, el chiste es que todos compartamos lo que tengamos. Igualmente la mayoría no activa esta restricción.
  Otros ponen contraseña a su contenido, y esperan que tú les hables solicitando la misma. Estos usuarios también son la minoría.

Existen múltiples salas de chat de distintas temáticas (charlando con alguien puedes descubrir música increíble). 👌

And... How does it work?

Soulseek is similar to other p2p network programs. To give you a better idea, its operation is quite similar to eMule.
Users have their shared folders, which other users can access and download content. I clarify that not only audio can be shared, but also several types of files, but the vast majority only share and search for music.

• Keep in mind that some users do not allow you to download from their folders, if you are not sharing anything.
  It is logical, the idea is that we all share what we have. However, most of them do not activate this restriction.
  Others put a password to their content, and wait for you to talk to them asking for it. These users are also in the minority.

There are multiple chat rooms of different themes (chatting with someone you can discover amazing music). 👌

Ahh... ¿Y por qué está tan bueno?

Hay varias cosas que en mi opinión hacen genial a este programa:

• Las chances de descargar un malware, spyware, etc. son casi nulas (en lo personal nunca resulté infectado, y eso que lo uso hace años).
• El abanico de contenido que hay es MUY amplio y MUY extenso. Ese disco que piensas que no lo encontrarás nunca, seguramente esté ahí. (No se frustren inmediatamente si cuando buscan algo no lo encuentran, pues tal vez el/los usuarios que tienen ese tesoro no estén conectados en ese momento. Reintenten al día siguiente, y al siguiente, y al siguiente...).
• Es posible personalizar los colores de toda la interfaz, la cual por cierto es bastante user-friendly.
• Tiene buenas velocidades de descarga.

Pero principalmente:

La comunidad

Al haberse mantenido con bajo perfil durante toda su vida, Soulseek goza de usuarios que están interesados en lo que buscan. Gente con la cual se puede entablar una conversación. Gente que aprecia la música.

Ahh... And why is it so good?

There are several things that in my opinion make this program great:

• The chances of downloading malware, spyware, etc. are almost nil (personally I never got infected, and I've been using it for years).
• The range of content is VERY wide and VERY extensive. That album that you think you will never find, is probably there. (Don't get frustrated immediately if when you search for something you don't find it, because maybe the user(s) who have that treasure are not connected at that moment. Try again the next day, and the next, and the next...).
• It is possible to customize the colors of the whole interface, which by the way is quite user-friendly.
• It has good download speeds.

But mainly:

The community

Having kept a low profile throughout its life, Soulseek enjoys users who are interested in what they are looking for. People with whom you can strike up a conversation. People who appreciate music.

Actualidad

Arbel sigue desarrollando Soulseek cada cierto tiempo, siendo la última versión para Windows lanzada el 22/07/2019. Sin embargo las actualizaciones hacen retoques menores, pues el funcionamiento, las opciones y la interfaz son básicamente las mismas desde hace varios años.

Present

Arbel continues to develop Soulseek from time to time, with the latest version for Windows being released on 07/22/2019. However the updates make minor tweaks, as the operation, options and interface are basically the same for several years.
