What about plastic waste on the planet?

All the plastic that is produced and processed on the planet will sadly end up in the oceans, with consequences for marine life and the world's maritime ecosystem. However, the industries that produce plastics have tried to find a solution that seems difficult to find.

Producing plastic is very cheap compared to the costs of applying recycling technologies, so it is more profitable to produce virgin plastic from resin. With the consequences of low oil prices, it is estimated that the total mass of plastic production will rise increasingly.

To give us an idea of the magnitude of the problem, imagine all the plastic that can fit in a soccer stadium, well that amount is estimated to be arriving daily to our oceans.

It has been thought of generating other materials to replace plastic, but glass and metals generate other problems equal to or greater than those of plastic, so that is where the question comes in:

What is the solution to this problem?

There has been much talk about recycling, especially for the plastic found on beaches, however collecting all this plastic does not represent a high percentage of that which is already in the oceans, perhaps the solution lies in the manufacture of some containers and containers that are biodegradable, with this you can achieve a decrease in the problem, but it is impossible from my perspective a complete solution.

The worst thing is that with this problem of covid-19, oil prices have dropped so much that it is more profitable for the plastic producing industries to produce virgin plastic than to make it from recyclable material.

I hope that technology can ensure that this final disposal of plastic in the world's oceans can be stopped in considerable numbers, it is a difficult task as population growth intensifies, and that there are also countries coming out of poverty and industrializing, the latter worsening the problem, as this industrial development brings with it more plastic production.

Tell me in the comments: What do you think could be a solution to this problem?

Thank you for taking the time to read and provide solutions so that the environment and our planet can mean a place where life as we know it can continue to exist.

Good article, in my country that is the least of the problems the forest is literally contaminated by mercury and no ecologist is talking about that problem.

I know that there are awareness on this matter but government can still make more awareness to the people so that they will not throw waste plastic products in oceans.
Also if the plastic industry can produce more biodegradable plastic just like you mention in your post, this will also help and government can do well by putting that into law.

Hello friend, the truth is a sad and worrying situation, people don't care about taking care of the planet, but they are not interested in educating themselves about it. I think that if our education would emphasize this topic, our thoughts would be different!

The amount of plastic that is used today still reaches an alarming level. Technology should change that very soon... But more than that, the behavior of human beings needs to change urgently!

Great post, @sandracarrascal.

It is incredible the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans, it would be very good if state of the art technology could provide sustainable and economical solutions to this environmental problem. Greetings @sandracarrascal and thanks for sharing
