Technology in mechanical systems (Part II)

We continue in the search of the importance that represents the use of the damping in any type of simple to complex mechanical system, and where, the technology plays an important role by means of the generation of new materials and with it components that manage to absorb the impact of any movement carried out in a certain task like the one observed in the gif at the beginning of this article.

Around us we can observe any form of mobility, both natural and artificial, and the same following different trajectories such as circular, parabolic, elliptical, among many others, on this occasion we will relate to the wonderful forced harmonic movement cushioned, this with the firm intention of being able to show the usefulness of artificial type cushioning.

When referring to the previous mobility we must express that to develop this movement we must inject some type of force or energy to a certain mechanical system and with it we are forcing this system to carry out the movement, and if we adapt cushioning components we will be consolidating the complex movement that we have described as forced-dampened.

In the previous article we related with a complex system of cushioning as the one adapted to a rustic vehicle, but this characteristic we can find it in any other type of vehicle, when we refer to the cushioning we are linking with that capacity that offers a certain natural environment or artificial component to diminish or to absorb the impact in a certain activity as it is observed in the gif.

If we relate to an example of natural damping, we could place as an example the oscillatory movement carried out when we swing and if we do not continue to apply force or energy to it we will gradually become paralyzed, that is, our movement is damped due to the natural friction found in our environment (such as air and gravitational action), Such natural conditions allow the movement described above to be slowed down little by little by ceasing to inject energy into it, thus losing its kinetic energy over time. We call this type of event naturally damped harmonic movement.

All types of harmonic mobility, whether forced or not, as its energy is dissipated, will behave according to the following curves, as shown in figure 1.

Figure 1. Harmonic and damped paths
Figure_1.png

In the previous figure 1, we could relate to an important graph which represents the behavior of a certain physical system, where, if we force it by injecting a constant energy it will describe the first curve, and if we stop applying force or energy it will describe the second and third curve described above, taking into consideration the types of friction present that make the system stop.

Conclusion

We continue to see that the action or influence of technology can be found in any type of activity developed by man, and every day that passes this influence becomes stronger due to the constant evolution of new technologies, this time we continue to highlight the importance of artificial cushioning components to reduce the impact of certain movements in certain activities.

We are related to the wonderful forced harmonic movement that is cushioned, and with this we could say that any physical or mechanical system in order to perform the mobility described above must be subjected to the continuous action of a force and to the action of components or shock absorbers, in order to seek the balance of the external forces involved and thus avoid a possible collapse of certain mechanical system.

There are many examples of the application of this type of cushioning technology, and each of us can see it in any aspect of our lives, all with the purpose of having a balanced mechanical system with a higher degree of efficiency, as observed at the beginning of this publication.

Until another opportunity my dear and appreciated readers.

@rbalzan79 I confess, I have a lot of fun observing and reading your well-crafted contributions with the incorporation of moving images in GIF format. Like the rest of your entries, this one is about the damping explanation, it was also excellent.

Good article, that technology is in constant evolution and it is something interesting to see I am not an expert but you explain it very well.
