Pushed out of the average society

avatar

While we had a few hours to ourselves, we decided to head into the city for a salad, a slice of cake, a cup of tea and a walk around for a little while. I was meant to do some work today (even though I am on holiday), but I just wasn't in the mood and spending some time alone together is rare for us. We ended up looking for some little bits and pieces for the new bathroom space, like a bin - it is very close to completion, but we have to get the electrician back to connect up the mirror. I could probably do it myself, but I also don't want to screw it up.

I received the following image in a group chat with colleagues and found it pretty interesting. These people aren't exactly mainstream thinkers, but the general discontent with what is happening in the world is growing, as is the ridiculous nature of society in regards to social justice and taking things out of context.

IMG20200713WA0000.jpg

My reply to this was, "Luckily, in the next five to ten years, most of us will have been replaced by AI". I don't actually joke in regards to this and I think that the next image taken of a street art installation is probably a decent illustration of what is to happen in the future, with many of us being forced to "hang up our coats" as we are no longer required, no longer relevant.

A lot of people seem to think that Artificial Intelligence isn't going to replace us as it is never going to be perfect, but don't realize that it doesn't have to be perfect - it just has to be better than us. When we consider the average of society, that isn't very hard to be. On average, AI and automation will outperform us in many tasks and a lot of the jobs it will fill are "white-collar" positions and people in manual positions like my electrician, are safe for many years to come.

This shift in employment is going to have an enormous impact on society and culture as we will have to not only come to terms with the economic issues to find ways to feed and clothe us (or not), but also how we define, divide and organize ourselves. Like it or not, for a very long time we have tied much of our identity to our skills and what we offer the community, which is why many last names look something like this:

Archer, Baker, Brewer, Butcher, Carter, Clark, Cooper, Cook, Dyer, Farmer, Faulkner, Fisher, Fuller, Gardener, Glover, Head, Hunt, Hunter, Judge, Mason, Page, Parker, Potter, Sawyer, Slater, Smith, Taylor, Thatcher, Turner, Weaver, Woodman, and Wright source

IMG_20200713_123519.jpg

What this reorganization might mean is that the Twitter image above might not actually be relevant in that future for various reasons. Firstly, as the internet generations start to populate the workplace and public positions, it is going to be increasingly common that "leaks from the past" come out and I suspect it won't be too long before sex tapes from politicians and officials are passe, no longer outrageous, no longer newsworthy.

I would suspect that pretty much anyone under 30 who could be somewhat publicly notable in the next 15+ years is going to have digital content out there somewhere that would currently be considered a career killer. And more interestingly is that while it is currently hidden from view, a handful of data collection companies have it all at their disposal. What this means is that they will have even more ammunition to use to manipulate the public sentiment and course of action and as we should know by now, they aren't afraid to use the tools they have globally.

What this means is that unless we come to terms with the fact that everyone has a past and we can change over time, we will continually cut down candidate after candidate for any position of prominence based on the pictures, tweets or videos supplied us to eat, that has been fed to the media outlets from "unknown sources". No candidate for anything will ever be "clean", we would have all inhaled deeply and been in compromising positions of some sort. Those who think they are hidden are not. Luckily for most of us, no one cares who we are as we are probably irrelevant in the grand scheme of things - very few of will be considered important enough to publicly burn.

But on the current track where we encourage the burning of public figures and random internetters through our consumption (monetization of an industry) habits, we are going to continually destabilize the foundations of society that have been in place for a very long time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing of course, but it might be a rough ride, especially considering that more and more of us will slowly be pushed out of workplaces and increasingly struggle financially. Financial struggle doesn't make for a stable community, especially when there is a massive amount of disparity between the very few at the top, and the rest.

I think that it is one of those, "It's gonna get worse, before it gets better" scenarios and while we are currently developing tools that will be brought in to soften blows and perhaps redirect the course of society, there is a long and rough road ahead. Who we as a community are, from the global view down to the granular cell of the individual, is changing and we are going to have to let go of some of our ideals of the past in order to negotiate the conditions of the future.

The younger we are, the more normal the future will seem - for most of us however, it is going to be a new normal and one that might be far more sink or swim than what we have been used to. At least for a time, until we learn that much of what we have created thus far was already irrelevant and superfluous to building a better world. However, maybe it is what we have to go through to get there.

After all, we are probably average.

Is the twitter sign up thingy for real or photoshoped? If real, great marketing lol.

Don't think it is real :D

Yeah...thought so. We live in too much of a "flower powery" society for that to be something real for Twitter. I would have loved it if it was real though.

I think that it will be an issue on blockchains too, but we are going to have to change how society thinks and behaves in the coming few decades.

I still don't think AI will 'render us useless'. We've managed to adapt to the information age and I think we'll find a way to adapt with AI in a way that we'd always be relevant.

I agree with virtually all other points. One point that stands out though is perhaps anyone who wants to lead in the future should stay off internet

In the short term, mid-term we will struggle, long-term perhaps we will have found a better way to live than what we have done so far.

This is the problem Very few 15 year old kids are going to think that far ahead - those that do might not be suited for leadership. Narrow the pool enough, there isn't much of a pool to choose from, but many positions. I imagine it like an elite sporting team - if you have millions of kids playing the sport, you will have a decent adult team - if you only have a few kids playing...

This is the more reason why people should be more creative, more valuable and less dependent on their jobs.

AI is already replacing some things in Nigeria as I am writing to you. It even became more evident in this pandemic

The AI will probably fake being more creative than the average person through sheer volume of information and simulation it can handle. But, at least we could learn to have some fun, rather than slave to a wage doing what an AI can do better.

Well in my days we had switchboard operators, no TVs and nothing much else compared to today. The banker, mayor and undertaker were the most important people in townn.
So yeah, we have seen many changes and yet we have always survived.

What's happening in the banks recently are scary, as most of them are closing down branches and going "online". Thousands have lost their jobs.
Airlines are "slimming" down their staff counts and machines will handle the bookings and arrivals. All under the banners of "cost savings" and "progress"
Pilots will also soon be a thing of the past.
I think that this is just a forerunner of what we can expect in the future. Technology erasing the need for manual workers.

This Covid thing has also taught millions that they can work from home. So soon it will be a goodbye to offices, expected rentals, and a host of other services.
We are slowly being herded into a technical and automated era.

A cold water fish doesn't like warm waters, but in case of a change it will adapt.

Just so can we, but you are right, as it will be painful, especially with the job losses and the demands will be great.

Technology erasing the need for manual workers.

For skilled workers where there is codeable routines. Real manual workers will be the last to go as building an AI and robot to crawl under the sink to unclog an S-bend won't be the first area of focus.

We are slowly being herded into a technical and automated era.

Yes. And we seem to be more than willing to shoot down the run. Convenience.

Just so can we, but you are right, as it will be painful, especially with the job losses and the demands will be great.

We definitely can adapt and survive, it just means that the way of life we have organised, including how the economy works and distributes will change. Even now, a lot of the drive of wealth to the top has come about through automation and AI - with the most lucrative companies having no products, but AI that collects, categorizes and distributes data.

I see a time coming that there will be no more S traps my friend.

Convenience. The less said the better.

Exactly and the problem lies in the little that will be distributed to the masses.
So it is unlikely for that to change soon. Unless of course some good brains can plot alternatives.

What I meant regarding S traps, is that they have developed a new tubular, stainless steel trap for water drainages. Very advanced, as it has an end screw off cap and a round filter inside.
In case of blockages one simply has to unscrew the end cap by hand and clean the filter.

After all, we are probably average.

A common error for the 'rich and famous' that got that way by being above average at one thing is that they believe they above average at everything. That often exposes the truth that we are all average.

I am certain that there will be a huge upheaval in society over the course of the next 40 or 50 years, but I have no idea what that will be. Will there be a huge redeployment of wealth? I wouldn't hold my breath for that one. Will there be famine and death and war? With global warming and it's consequences I think you can count on that.

Our best hope, no, make that your best hope is to choose enlightened and dedicated leaders.

Narrow greatness - average averageness :)

Will there be a huge redeployment of wealth?

Yes - but it probably won't be pleasant - because of:

Will there be famine and death and war? With global warming and it's consequences I think you can count on that.

this.

Our best hope, no, make that your best hope is to choose enlightened and dedicated leaders.

My plan is to raise one. If she chooses to lead, that is up to her, but I hope she will have the skills necessary if she must. If she chooses not to, those skills will help her survive.

I don't know why people care so deeply and take it so personally when someone famous is doing a thing they wouldn't care if their neighbours did XD

The younger we are, the more normal the future will seem

Isn't this normal :)

I don't really understand why people care about celebrities at all - but I am not a very good fan of anything ever. If music is good, I like the music - don't care what the band gets up to.

Yes it is normal - but something people seem to forget. I see it in the workplace where an old employee will complain heavily about small changes to their routines in some way, while a new employee accepts them, and a new hire learns them without questioning the change - it is just the process that is.

Unless it involves back in my day people seem to have the long term memory span of one election cycle.

I lie ideas and concepts and can appreciate (or criticise) people for what they do, but I find it weird when people celebrate celebrity - especially those who are only social personas - I saw that Kim Kardashian is a billionaire... why?

people seem to have the long term memory span of one election cycle

Exactly the problem with politics :D

AI will replace humans in many jobs. That will leave people wonder about their calling in life. Many saw their calling in a job, maybe missing to pursue what they were really destined for. Tough pill to swallow after a certain age? Absolutely! Hard to navigate and find your place in the new society! That's a no brainer!

We as humans will have to level up. Our thinking, our goals, our path in life. Our ways of making money. AI is not just sci fi as some might think, it is going to be a reality.

On a different perspective, it can open new roads for people who would not have thought walking on them unless this would happen. Progress is necessary. Sometimes, and most of the times, it hurts and it is not comfortable. Neither is success.

We shall see, this will be interesting.

AI already controls much of what we do, but it isn't visible. All those social algorithms and suggestions are guiding our decisions now.

Making us all irrelevant might be the best thing that happens to us as a society. Then we can find out who we are when we don't have to earn for a living.

Then we can find out who we are when we don't have to earn for a living.

I wonder why don't we replace then with now. Why do we have to wait? Why people don't ask themselves this vital question now? Because all we have is... Now..then...is just a future concept.. Why?

We don't have to wait, but the problem is that we still (mostly) have obligations and wants - money is generally needed for both :)

Dirty dirty money.Reminds me of that song dirty cash haha. We all need money, but the way we organise our lives around this desire will dictate whether we are going to get them in the amounts we want them or not

Yes. We must try. We must not wait for opportunities, we must strive to create them. That is why I always admire those who try try try. It does not matter if you fail, but trying puts you ahead of all of those who sit comfortably and complain, waiting for old age to die of pure boredom. Sounds harsh, but that's a reality.
