FRIDAY 13TH, MARCH 2020

avatar

Friday the 13th. It is the start of the apocalypse, the end is nigh and the future we had collectively hoped for, is all but destroyed.... Yada, Yada...

My company is heading into the abyss of the Corona virus, with international travel bans and very restricted guidelines for internal movement, based on the decisions of the government. They haven't enacted martial law yet, but a global pandemic does open the gateway and that means that there would be the potential for things like curfews being imposed, as well as other restrictions on movement and options.

Whether hype or not - it is super annoying.

IMG_20200313_142703.jpg

I was speaking at distance with a colleague today who has had to cancel a few things and is hoping insurance covers it. I know the feeling. My wife bought me tickets to Ricky Gervais in Copenhagen for Christmas, and with only 4 weeks til we are meant to travel, it doesn't look good. It would have been our first trip and weekend away together in four years. Then there is the likelihood of crashing house prices, meaning we will struggle with the renovation loan portion, material shortages, food considerations - social restrictions...

It feels like the universe is conspiring against me. Me personally. Funny, isn't it?

None of this is personal and I understand that of course, but when affected directly, it is me who feels it. While everyone is in the same boat to varying degrees, I think that it is easy to feel that it is only me who is impacted and as a result, get the sense that it is a personal attack, that something is unfair about the situation. It is worse because I know that all in all, I am in a much better relative situation than many in the world and the worst in Finland wouldn't seem pretty good to someone living in a different country.

But, it relative is the operative concept, as we evaluate things from what we know and our experience, and it matters little what other people are going through. Should we feel bad about this, or is it just the way humans work, since we are the center of our own universes and everything is related to the central point of control, or lack thereof as the case may be.

I tend to lean toward it being a natural reaction, as we cannot feel what we do not know and cannot consider. I do however wish that those out there struggling relative to their own normal did not have to endure pain or suffering, but that is just not going to happen - at least any time soon.

Most of my complaints are first world problems, issues that many others would find insignificant in their own lives if living in my shoes with their experience. I know this, I know that I am spoiled for choice, spoiled healthcare, spoiled for security and stability of society in Finland. The drama over the hoarding of toilet paper in Australia must look ridiculous to those who have struggled for basic foods in their life. Perhaps it is a good thing to wake us up to just how good we have it, most of the time.

My father grew up in a little village that was occupied during World War Two and I wonder if the average response at that time would have been panic buying of what are essentially luxury items for many. He is turning 84 in a few months and has Alzheimer's, but I would assume that he would likely still exhibit more grit than most under adverse conditions. You know - suck it up.

Many of us have become soft, myself included. I think it is time to act on what I assume is an Australian expression and - Harden the fuck up.

Yep, people will die from this, people already have. While unpleasant to deal with, we are all going to end up in the same condition, it is just that we normally do not have to face the question of how we are going to be removed from existence. At least in this neck of the woods, at this particular point on the time line. Not too far back however, facing death was part of living life, as we were surrounded by it far more often as people had more children and the average life expectancy was significantly lower. We have been insulated from the face of death, removed from the consideration of our own - we all think we will live to a ripe old age - and beyond.

As I wrote in my last post, we have to accept what we can't control, act upon what we can. Each decision made or not made is an active choice that affects our future, and while mistakes can be made and life can go awry - we each do the best we can, with what we have.

What are the three most valuable resources you have available to you right now?

Mine:

  • my thoughts
  • my work ethic
  • my belief that the world can improve

I think I will keep working toward a better world.

This post rocks when read with a Morgan Freeman voice inside your head.

I agree. Reading this with a Morgan Freeman voice style inside your head sounds pretty rocking prophetic.

Now, what I find it much more intriguing is the fact that neither @.overall-servant, @.olaf123, @.bob77, @.florianopolis & the rest of @.hiroyamagishi's army of preachers hasn't come here to drop their holy comments and enlighten us further about th3 futur3 with one of their videos yet. :D

Well, that's pretty weird. I am always crystal clear in everything I'm trying to convey. Must be something related to a generational gap.

Do you think he would be willing to do voice-over work? Perhaps an SPS proposal.

I'm not sure about that. I could call and ask but he never answers anymore because too many people were calling just to hear his voice say something.

That's the best of you, I also live with same thoughts. And work ethic is definitely one of my biggest asset. But I am not a true believer of world can improve, because I think, day by day, the population is increasing, so there is a continuous fight for the same resources. And there will be consequences , its just that we don't know when. May be the current situation is one of the indicator.

I think it can improve, but I didn't say it would be easy, nor cost something. The population growth isn't a problem yet, but if we simultaneously keep consuming as we do, it definitely will be. I wonder what the world would look like with clean and free energy though - better?

What are the three most valuable resources you have available to you right now?

Looking at the reality of the situation as I see it.

1. 2017 Flue deaths quick search on google worldwide total:

Flu Kills 646,000 People Worldwide Each Year: Studywww.medicinenet.com › script › main › art
Seasonal flu kills 291,000 to 646,000 people worldwide each year, according to a new estimate that's higher than the previous one of 250,000 to 500,000 deaths a year. The new figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other groups were published Dec. 13 in The Lancet medical journal.

2. number of worldwide coronavirus deaths

Global coronavirus death toll tops 5,000 - New York Postnypost.com › 2020/03/13 › global-coronavirus-death-toll-tops-5000
5 hours ago - The global death toll of the coronavirus pandemic has jumped to 5,043, according to a tally by Agence France-Presse based on official sources.

3. Common sense, take precautions, but really no need to panic. I am in the high risk category for odds on dying from the coronavirus, I have had lung cancer, have had part of a lung removed, and have copd and scarring on my remaining lungs from cases of pneumonia. Precautions taken, no dining out since the beginning of the outbreak, not hospital visits for normal follow-up health scans, shopping once a week verse three or four times a week, After getting back in the car from shopping using rubbing alcohol to wipe my hands down.

In 2017 did people run around like chickens with their heads cut-off?

  • Problem: Governments losing control of the people
  • Reaction: Scare the crap out of them
  • Solution: We the government are here to save the day.

4. Standard Flu Season:

1982-1983 through 2017-2018. When is the flu season in the United States? In the United States, flu season occurs in the fall and winter. While influenza viruses circulate year-round, most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February, but activity can last as late as May.

Were you a smoker?

I am in a high risk group also, as the treatment I have for my stomach issues reduces my immune response enormously. I can't even get the treatment if I have a normal flu. Oh well! :D

Yes I was a smoker, right up to the departure day to go to the hospital. The best thing I ever found for stomach issues was the Grolsh beer with the pop tops, the charcoal flavor or aging process or something when just sipped on over a two hour period did wonders on decreasing stomach nausea from IBS and seemed to help settle the acids. I tried a lot of other beers but that was the only one that worked, and it is not easy to get up here anymore.

The president here just had a news thing and talked a lot about the Corona Virus, I still think it is mostly bull. People keep throwing Italy in the mix now because of all the deaths, I do not buy it because if you look at it the virus is not acting like a real virus, Containment efforts did not start until the first deaths, people kept going on about their everyday lives in Italy, that would include travel to other towns and cities and provinces, yet over 90% of the deaths in Italy are in one province. That does not to me seem to be a normal viral outbreak. Clustering of deaths in mobile societies makes one wonder about how it is really spread.

I quit about 10 years ago after about 12 years a smoker. Glad I did, though I sometimes still feel like one with a cup of coffee. Rarely though.

I can't drink beer really, it all is bad for me :)

I don't know enough about the spread of viruses to comment, but so far at least, it hasn't been worth the panic. Which is a good thing.

Three most valuable resources... These might vary on some days. But today...

  • Time remaining- to change (for the better). I find it surreal- how many friends have passed away in recent years.

  • Perspectives that others share generously. My own gain clarity as as a result.

  • A realization, that my / our tight grip on inividuality.. is not altogether "natural". Not to this extent. This illusion is a burden and a source of pain.

Just the other day I was talking with someone about how few funerals I have been to, but I have a feeling that it is going to see an increase.

The grip on individuality we have has disconnected us in many ways from each other in a "divide and conquer" process. It does drive consumer products though....

Yeah. Suck it up buttercup we are fortunate to may out there. I was reading yesterday the ones who are royally screwed are the communities without running water. In South Africa which is supposed to be better off than most African countries you start to wonder how bad it really is. Something like 6 out of 10 are living with Aids and not all of them are on the special drugs so the death toll when the Corona hits will be real in this part of the world.
I think most of us are fortunate even though we don't see how well off we really are. The situation sucks as I believe this virus was made either for culling the population or to crash the markets. It looks like it will do a bit of both.
