Fly away hair and drive-bys

avatar

Smallsteps went and got a haircut today for the second time in her life. We took her to the same salon but since the hairdresser who did it last time was booked for the next month, it ended up being the owner who cut it. Weirdly, I have spent a lot of time around hairdressers in my life and saw from the outset that this person really didn't care that much about what she was doing, and once we got home I had to clean up the back as it was uneven with a few chunks of longer hair there. I have been cutting my own hair for about 15 years as I had got tired of paying a premium to end up finishing it myself. I can screw up my hair for free!

As I said in the last post, my wife is looking for houses and when she "framed the idea" this morning, I already knew she had something in mind. While there was no showing until Monday evening, we went for a drive past it to see what the suburb is like and if there are services around. We could of course manage pretty much anywhere, but where we are is pretty ideal as Smallsteps' grandparents are only a 5 minute walk away, and that makes it very easy for them too. We also would have to change daycare for her and whie that is not a problem for the most part, where she has been has been relatively understanding and attentive of her dietary needs.

The suburb is old and a bit rundown in my opinion, but as it isn't too far out of the city, it is likely going to see some upgrades in the next decade. The house itself looks to be (from the outside and pictures) in good condition and the neighbouring houses are also. This is something to pay attention to when buying a house in my opinion as those people next door aren't likely to move anytime soon.

So, now that we are investigating the possibility, we have to make sure that we are able to get a suitable loan and that requires getting our current apartment evaluated so we have a ballpark on what we could expect to get for it in the area. We have some collateral in it, but there are factors that have changed in the area that will affect prices. We have a real estate agent coming tomorrow to have a look and provide some pricing.

I do not have a lot of faith in real estate agents in general as they have incentive to skew opinions early on to get the contract, and then incentive to sell for less as the difference to their commission doesn't change that much whether it is 5% more or less. But, that kind of difference does matter to the seller - and the buyer.

I think that we are more likely to sell the place ourselves though, because I do not really see the value of the agent in selling places that are relatively easy to sell anyway, but this depends on the market. These days however, most people do their own leg work as online buyers and then contact the agents directly. When I sold my last apartment, the commission for the agent was over 7000€ and she did two open houses and it sold in less than three weeks - She didn't even take the pictures - I did.

One of the things that I am excited about if we do move into a house is that I can have a space for an office and fingers crossed, a garage that has the possibility of a workshop. While not overly handy or good at it, I love playing around with random things and building stuff with my hands. I think this has some genetic component from both sides of the family tree. Creating things is great as it forces investment in and therefore, the value of something is higher, even if the quality isn't - much like the results of cutting my own hair.

Obviously, there are lots of roadblocks and risk considerations to evaluate before doing anything, but it is nice to have a different kind of project to think about for a change - Even if it ends up being a non-event.

Grandparents being close is a big plus. The area and its future prospects not seem bad at all. Lots of development.

Yeah, it is a bit of an issue as this is an up an coming area, but at the same time, we can't afford to get a house in this area now. I don't want a rivitalo as that has all the negatives of a house and an apartment combined. Depends of course what one is looking for :)

I have lived in kerros, rivi and omakoti talos. :)

In my opinion, in living a block flats (kerrostalo) the positives are: cost savings, not having to trouble oneself with the administration of the building (through the housing corporation that directly owns the property that all the homeowners are shareholders of) because there will always be people willing to do it, convenience because things like snow removal will be done by hired help at a low cost. The negatives include little influence over how the building or apartment complex is run, potential noise, no yard, less privacy.

A rivitalo (row house, a single building, not a row of adjacent but separate buildings like is common in many places in more densely populated countries) can be a good compromise as the cost of fixing any big problems is shared between all the homeowners, there exist private yards, lower costs than in a detached house, more privacy than in a kerrostalo. The downsides include potentially having to take part in managing the entire building or complex of buildings because of a lack of competent or willing people. Also, there is less privacy and decision making power than in a detached house.

A detached house combines decision making power and no support from anyone else. If something expensive breaks, the cost is on you entirely. You can hire people to do all the snow removal and all that but it's very expensive and rare for anyone to do so and there might not even be people available to do that kind of work. The costs tend to be slightly higher than in a rivitalo if you account for everything including the fact that there are no shared outer walls. But if you are good at doing stuff yourself, you can save money, but don't count on it. Leave things like plumbing and electrical to professionals.

I am not much of a fan of realtors either. They serve a great purpose for those who do not have the time or ability to buy or sell on their own, but for those of us who do, I feel it is better to simply pay yourself with the cost of a commission. Regardless, best of luck in your potential transition. My family is working to fill our newly acquired storage unit as we unmoor and set off on an adventure south of the border 🌱

Yep, the 7k was definitely not worth it.

That sounds like you are on some adventure. How long are you planning on travelling for?

6 months to start, potentially indefinitely. We educate our kids at home, and our income is mobile, so we want to take this opportunity while the kids are young to learn about the world from exploring the world. It's a big risk, but hopeful for a big reward, much like you 🌱

Nothing is more annoying than a hair dresser that couldn't give a toss about what it is that you actually want.

As for the house...always an exciting venture to move to a new spot! It is like a clean canvas!! Hope you find precisely what you are looking for!

The worst is that she was the owner of the salon, and now we aren't planning on going back. The next haircut will be done at home by @galenkp's wife when they visit in the summer though anyway.

So far in Finland, I have only bought places knowing that I was going to move on from them in the not too distant future. I am hoping the next one is something I can spend more time making it home.

Sometimes the owners are more arrogant and disinterested than staff members which is shocking to say the least.

Been a few days... found anything interesting yet?

Perhaps some owners have become disillusioned and just see it as a job.

Seeing a second place tonight, as the first was out of our range ... come on Steem ;D

Ever since I moved out from my parents, at the age of 18 years I think it was, I have been living in apartments. I bought a house last year and I must say there are a lot of pros. Especially if you like to be creative and need some extra space. I’m trying to turn the entire basement into a mini factory which can give me some extra income, but with a full time job it is taking some time to be realized. But slowly it is moving ahead. Having a garage is pretty golden, and just having your own little space over all is quite important I think.

Of course I have given up a lot of convenience by getting a house. My house is a 20 minute drive from town and work place and I guess here it is considered being the country side. But after living in China, 20 minutes traveling is not a big deal for me. Do you live in Helsinki ?

I used to have space here until our daughter got a bit older and needed more of her own. My space is now a corner of the dining table. We are out if the city a bit so it doesn't change much and as an Australian, travel isn't really an issue.

I live a couple hundred km north of Helsinki in Tampere.

What kind of factory?

Well I got some machines for cutting wood. And then my dad, who lives close by, has a 3D printer and CNC machine. So trying to get some projects going. I used to study industrial design in China, and after graduating I haven’t really done so much designing. Hoping to get back in the game.

That sounds great and I am a bit jealous. I have always wanted to make custom furniture or lights, but have never had the time, space or money :)

Good luck!

These seem like big decisions going into them, but we're amazingly adaptable. I remember looking at our block before we built, and the only way in/out of the estate was this long, winding residential road. I remember thinking that would be annoying, taking that particular road every trip. That was ten years ago, and not once have I found myself annoyed by it like I thought I'd be.
Once you commit to it, it just becomes the new normal.

Just my thoughts here, We were the 2nd of 7 to purchase 10+ acre plots in our culdesac.

Had I known the 6th buyers would make the last 15 yrs a nightmare. Making Me dread being at my otherwise paradise. (home) Well.... Maybe We would have reconsidered?

I am gonna stowaway on a boat, go to Australia and live in a SWAG in @galenkp s ex swimming pool/garden.

Nahhhh.... We, @pooky-jax & I, love our Pookyville Cat Rescue Ranch.unqc51t986.jpg

But it is such a Gamble. The neighbors part, cuz they can change. And really be horrible. Out of 9 or so nearby houses. It is right around 50/50 on great neighbors and Cunts.

Haaaaa i knew I would get to use that word again..... Love it..!!

She's cute...Just a little more so than uncle G-dog!

Buy the house...You got some Aussies coming in July.

I do not have a lot of faith in real estate agents

I know a good one, but most are clueless.

I hope it works out because it would be good to avoid the complications we spoke of yesterday and for you guys to have a little bit of back yard. About time you had to get out and mow the lawn!

Hopefully the appointment went well and the wheels are turning. Who knows, maybe crypto pays for some.

We used an agent who also happened to be a friend of mine so I think he took some extra care on top of being scrupuluos anyway XD And he also did all the photography work.

And then didn't end up selling thus didn't end up buying because one needed to happen to enable the other

Good luck with coming to a decision :D

We were in a 6 house chain of sell/buy to get our place sold and to buy the next. It is silly.

I know a real estate agent or two, knowing makes a difference.
