Answering uncomfortable questions

(Edited)

In the morning just before I headed to work, I saw a post by @acidyo asking the question, how much have you earned in the past month? well, he said "month this far", but since Steemworld.org looks at the last 30 days, it was easier to do it from that perspective. The reason he was asking was to provide an alternate way to onboard some users from other platforms, and while I do not think it is always wise to look at it from a money perspective A la Jerry Banfield, it can be useful for some people. Demonstrating this can help some potential users get a better understanding of the way things work on Steem.

In a comparison to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Reddit, Steem is very unique. Sure, the earning might not compare to top or even mid-range YouTube creators, but pretty much everyone has the ability to earn something. And for those willing to buy some STEEM and power it up to vote on others as they consume here, they all earn something relative to their stake. One of the main reasons this is possible is that the blockchain is not a corporate entity with staff and overheads in the traditional model, it takes no cut for anything. What it does do is allocate some of the inflation pool to witnesses to keep itself running.

The other interesting thing about Steem is that it breaks the stereotypical social conventions of not talking about earnings, something that as an "older person" is still a bit strange for me. I was not overly keen to put a comment on Acid's post, even though what I added is freely available for anyone to check for themselves, since there is a high degree of transparency on Steem earnings - something people coming in would have to get accustomed to also. But regardless of discomfort, I did add a comment giving my numbers for the last 30 days of earnings, available from https://steemworld.org/

While I do not know for sure, I am likely among the highest earning content creators on Steem, something that I am very grateful for. There are people who earn more in curation though, and that is something that has to be remembered when looking at these numbers because while I earned on my content, others earned on its consumption. That is awesome.

I am also probably one of the most consistent non-automated producers and have been this way for nigh on three years straight, and I do not think people would ever describe my posts as "brief".

  • On 288 days I have submitted 4 or more top level posts
  • 147 times I have submitted at least one on every day of the week
  • For 32 months I have submitted at least 1 post a day for the entire month

I have been on Steem for 155 weeks or 35 months, meaning that I haven't missed much here in 3 years.

Whether you are building a social network, a business or a skill, consistency is a key factor and for the most part, the networks, businesses and skills that generate the most valuable are the ones that take the most work. The reason is that if the barriers for accomplishment are very low, anyone can do it and just like inflation that dilutes value of a currency, the benefits are diluted.

But as said, pretty much anyone can earn on Steem and those who are willing to invest external resources into it are pretty much guaranteed to earn STEEM. I have taken a hybrid approach of earning through content offering, curation on content I consume and, investing external resources to enhance my experience and influence on the platform.

Everyone has their own path to take, this has been mine, and part of the reason is that while I might not have many competitive advantages, one I do have and can control is my content creation and consistency. It hasn't mattered whether STEEM is high or low, it hasn't mattered if bidbots controlled 40% of the pool and distributed to 3% of the users, it hasn't mattered if there is a curve or linear rewards, 25 or 50% curation, dead chain after hardforks, spikes in price or being 95% down from the highs or whether I am getting trolled or downvoted - I keep writing, I keep engaging, I keep positive.

As a result, I have been able to develop a little niche for myself and find an audience who engages and is willing to support me consistently, of which I am grateful and quite aware that it is a privilege, not a right. I am also quite sure that many of those who do support me also trust me in more ways than to deliver relatively decent content and also know, I trust them. While a blockchain is brilliant as a trustless network, trust is very important in social relationships and, this is a social platform.

Anyway, while I wasn't overly wanting to talk about my earnings, it is all on the blockcahin for anyone to see, and I am sure that quite a few have so, here are my last 30 days as stated in the comment I put on Acid's post.

Last 30 Days,

600 in curation
2000 in SP + 2000 in liquids (from posting and I had a couple large payouts this month)
This (if I had sold it) has a street value of ~$800

I do not know about Steem-Engine tokens, but I would predict it is a couple hundred STEEM worth. I take some out for powering up, I stake some and have my @babytarazkp account distribute them through @curangel. It votes with multiple tokens and significant value 100 times per day to about 400 accounts a week.

For the first time in about 2 years, I took a little STEEM to play the markets (about 1500) recently, but it will eventually come back with a bit more (if all goes to plan).

I have been buying and exchanging shitcoins like EOS over the last year and a half and have increased my SP by about 50,000 STEEM in that period. It is because of this that my curation returns are so high, (and because of the EIP of course).

While these post earning numbers are likely among the highest on the platform, I do think that my content brings value and will bring more in the future. My 28 day tweet impressions from my posts alone, are 60k. I also think that while not everyone is likely to be able to produce as consistently as me, over the last year, there are people like @blewitt, @slobberchops and @goblinknackers who have bought in similarly and are enjoying the benefits of compounding Steem Power through curation and posting. I urge everyone to post something, and as many as possible to bring their A-game and share it with the world.

At the next full bull run, I think we need to find users across multiple disciplines and boost them to the moon and get their names out there as this will get traction. Then we have to have fantastic UIs and UXs for new users to enjoy and get value from, even if they don't earn from them. When it comes to online earnings, it requires a great deal of consistent work for most people to get something significant, and Steem is no different - but, pretty much everyone with a brain (many without) can earn something here, which can't be said about pretty much any other platform out there.

While the focus on earnings is not ideal for onboarding end users, if approaching people who really are looking to earn from their content, it can help to see that it is possible. What they would have to realize however that the best way to earn is a hybrid approach from content creation and investing, as this allows for relationship development and the ability to support others who are value generating for the platform.

The value of investing in STEEM POWER is it can be actively used to invest into people who support the generation of value in the STEEM held. It is an ecosystem after all, and results are going to vary across individuals due to a host of factors.

While I am not sure if I stated it well in the comment section of the post and I am sure that there will be many people who disagree with what is worth voting, what is the best way to onboard, what is quality, what is nonsense etc, I still believe that what is always valuable is, authenticity. It is because of that which I feel comfortable posting about earnings here and potentially having them broadcast on other platforms because, this has been me, this has been my journey and everything I put on Steem are parts and shades of my experience shared as openly as I can.

I think that everyone has a place on Steem if they choose, but if someone has expectations of specific outcomes, the actions need to be performed in order to achieve them. From early on Steem, I wanted to earn - but for all of my life I wanted to do something that I believe is valuable for us in our world. There are many ways to add value to society, I have chosen Steem, and I think that in time it will allow me and many others to spiral out much further and compound the benefits greatly for many on and off the platform.

Err, wow! That sounds very impressive.

With 'income' from the tribes and dec/cards over at Steemmonsters, it's tough to tally up what's been gained - I got 300 STEEM for a card last week and so would say something like 1800 STEEM/SP in total over the past 30.

I've bought more than that though :)

Buying is definitely recommended over the last 6 months at these prices :)

I wonder how many accounts in the last month have earned 50+ STEEM in some way? easy pull?

Excluding Cards and Tribe tokens, probably not too hard. I'll add it to the list ;)

Sure, the earning might not compare to top or even mid-range YouTube creators

Would that be the case when STEEM will be sitting at its ATH again? Because their earnings is the pegged dollar...and its value is going down...and will keep going down...

ATH? It doesn't even have to get that high to be one of the largest distributors in the media world. 26Million Steem out of the pool at the moment.

@ $1 That is 26M
@ $2 That is 52M
@ $5 That is 130M
@ $10 That is 260M

and that is just the value of the yearly pool :)
if we can build the ecosystem so in two years the floor price is above one, and in five years above 4, we are sitting very pretty.

What are the steps Steem needs to make to get there you think? I know communities are coming, that can only help, but are there other things I'm missing?

UX. A lot of the applications are similar to what Steem always was, what they need to do is find what people love and make the tokenization a native part of the experience, not a focus or an afterthought. This is a learning process though, and in time and as more developers get involved, innovation and wide use case will be added. If one doesn't like the experience of Steem, they are only here for the money - that'll never drive long-term adoption.

I see. Personally I'm waiting for communities before continuing on my own projects. That might be the same for many others. I think they'll enable a lot of possibilities of reaching people outside Steem and having them use it and not even being aware of it.

I am not in your league my friend, but I repeat the important paragraph yhay you wrote here, as I am doing exactly the same.

"Everyone has their own path to take, this has been mine, and part of the reason is that while I might not have many competitive advantages, one I do have and can control is my content creation and consistency. It hasn't mattered whether STEEM is high or low, it hasn't mattered if bidbots controlled 40% of the pool and distributed to 3% of the users, it hasn't mattered if there is a curve or linear rewards, 25 or 50% curation, dead chain after hardforks, spikes in price or being 95% down from the highs or whether I am getting trolled or downvoted - I keep writing, I keep engaging, I keep positive".

This is for sure the way to go!
Blessings!

I struggle to post once a day, I said before.. I don't know how you do it.

Mind you my content is more pictorial than you, images take time to add, edit, filter and authoring my stuff is bad on the go.

60,000 impressions.. that's almost 10 x more than me.

Since I am posting here daily, I am trying to keep it consistent on Twitter too.

I don't even have time to go out with the camera of late... hopefully soon.

That's a decent follower upgrade, I never bothered much with Twitter until recently.

I created this account at the end of November for posh. it is growing slowly and steadily. If one of the posts gets some traction, it is worth the effort.

Just take your phone, they do a decent job and fit in your pocket.

But there are only so many photos of my work desk that I can bear to take.

I will have to say I don't think I've ever once been envious of the reward you earn either as you consistently put in way more work on here than I can ever hope to achieve (at least currently).

I can't say that for some others on the platform that earns high rewards as they're posts aren't necessarily quality or long.

Sometimes I feel like Forrest Gump running across the US. Notice that jealousy is nearly always on result, not journey?

Some of the things I have seen here over the years are depressing. Plenty of inspiring stuff too to balance it though.

That is one thing that grinding on Steem has taught me.

Some people are just abusing the system and that frustrates me, but after putting in some serious grind, burning out, running out of things to talk about, and having to refocus my goals and times to other aspects of my life sometimes that brings in more money now.

I've noticed most content creators have put in the grind for years making barely minimum wage to make the money their making now and most of the time, instead of relaxing when they make it, they usually continue to work just as much or more.

Success doesn't come from luck, it comes from hard work. You've definitely been putting in the work.

Wow! A good passive income and upon reading your post it made me more interesting to go on. Some friends of mine stopped on steeming because of the value. I told them, it's wrong. What matters for me is finding new life in steemit with awesome community members. But I never knew, I earned a lot of sp compared last year.
I would like to say thank you to you for sometime @curangel dropped by my post and gave me a good curation.
Steem on!

"At the next full bull run, I think we need to find users across multiple disciplines and boost them to the moon and get their names out there as this will get traction"

100% this, I'm so glad to hear you say it. We need those with high amount of Steem power and following to cultivate upcoming authors and make them stick rather than just try to boost themselves. We need ton more great authors to attract readers, the word to spread and so on. It's about time Steem Power holders start acting like shareholders of a company that they are rather than just greedy cut throat capitalists in dog eats dog world, we have something unique here that people might be willing to support IF the shareholders show they can be trusted with that power.

You missed the days of 12k for makeup videos or even better 12k for parody of that same makeup video... Imagine how that looked for any serious investor. We all need to play our part and you're leading the attitudes to the right direction, in my opinion. A serious bullrun might be starting now, let's see if we can make the best out of it.

Yeah, I am glad i missed those days... BTW, where is she now? ;D

In time i believe that the real investors here will increase their supportive function. Currently, many think that having Steem power and using it to maximize personal gain is all they need do, but that'll change.

Long gone after the bull run busted if I remember right.

Makes only sense to start thinking of ways of increasing the passive income from the shares one owns.

I guess maximizing personal gains made sense before, Steem really wasn't ready for mainstream, but slowly we're getting there and should change the behavior along with it. But picking those right authors will be hard, but rewarding nonetheless. Good luck with that :)

Yep, if I remember she came back for a while but was chased off after some scamming?

Passive income from consumption sounds pretty good to me as a consumer. While I am lucky to earn what I have, I also think that is pretty incredible to think that there are many people earning from it too - hopefully while they enjoy it.

I don't think much will change from the process of other platforms in the way of earning, but what will change is the ownership of the platform itrself, and the distribution of total earnings. It is revolutionary and also very traditional, much like a co-op.

Can't remember but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the truth.

All true, originally I liked the idea for all the good it could do. After that I obviously had to face some hard truths about how the world works. But that original vision still isn't totally gone. I guess we just need time for SP to flow to the right places.

I am creating and posting original content on a daily basis, too. I power up everything. cannot invest dollars in SP, tho. I'd say my results quite differ. typical post (if getting no fat curation attention) is about 0.6-1 steem.

Of course it is going to differ greatly, as it shold. Consistency is one thing, topic and content another, building relationships and engagement another again. There are many factors that go into it, including luck. Considering you joined in April 2019, you are doing pretty well :)

This doesn't seem right, but, I pulled it right of Steem World. What the heck am I still doing here sporting such dismal numbers?

I wish I had better news, but, the truth is, I keep posting, and enjoy it here, and although I get a fair amount of interaction, I do spend a fair amount buying tipu. My upvote is so weak that I felt I needed to supplement a tip, at the very least.

I am consistent in my posting, good times and bad.

I must congratulate you on your standing. I knew it was up there, but, I am stunned how much you can really earn. However, I also know it does not come easy and you work hard or it, so it is well deserved.

Thanks for making me think. Have a great day!

Those numbers aren't bad at all! I think that my volume of work makes a big difference.

I have to say, I started following you a few weeks ago and am impressed by the market friday traction, and what they are earning. Good job. I see the resteems and try to add some value and potential @curangel to some of them as I can :)

In the last 7 days it is about 120 STEEM. At waht price do you think it would reflect the value of your time? 1 dollar, 2? If it went to 5 or 10? Just think how much value you would have generated for others as well in the time from now until then.

I knew I had a friend somewhere in @curangel. Thank you for that! I don't make enough to worry about the value of my time. Right now, it is all about learning, having fun and if something is made, I'm happy. I was fine on FB for years, I am not about to complain about the positive experience here.

The funny thing about my posts is they sometimes have to simmer and always generate some interaction, many times days after they are written. Even My #MarketFriday. They are still dropping their links in on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. :) We have begun to call it MarketWeekend.

Thanks for the feedback and yes, you don't need the baby tip, but, somehow, it feels good giving you a little something. You give so much to others.
