Notes during a Corona Pandemic #3 | Friends and Virtual Concerts

(Edited)

I just signed off from a virtual concert - some colleagues of my boyfriend are true music nerds, so their company has its own band - performing at after work drinks or during the yearly New Years Drinks.

Every Friday the company has a half hour where someone holds a presentation - about something work related, or something personal, or better yet, a combination of the two.

This Friday, with social distancing in mind, they decided to replace that half hour with a 'concert'. There were 5 performances, someone recited a poem, someone played the piano, and there was even an ensemble between two households which had some technical (lag) issues but true nerds as they are they had solved those pretty well - I won't bore you with the technical details, but it was quite advanced and involved using multiple streams, turning on and off specific microphones and headsets, all to play live for all of us.

81 cameras were turned on for the concert, and since each cam had multiple eyes on them, maybe 150 people were 'present' - pretty spectacular for a virtual concert don't you think?

I love these innovations and initiatives. As I'm home a lot due to physical limitations, I can't help but thinking: how many of these innovations will stay after social distancing isn't necessary anymore? I would love to keep a few, virtual meetings and yoga lessons and and and and... They would really make a difference for me as often it's the traveling that prevents me from going to meetings or classes.

And I know I'm not the only one.

Can we solve the puzzle of social isolation because we're forced now to think about how we can stay connected during this pandemic?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Another spectacular thing: one of my dearest friend went on her (electric, but still) bike today to cycle 1,25 hours to my city from hers, to visit me, bring me presents, share a glass of water in the sun, and cycle the same 1,25 hours back to her city.

She didn't need to take public transport this way, we stayed 1,5 meters apart (and believe me, I would've loved hugging her!), and still had this opportunity to share a moment and laugh together.

I feel blessed.

These times are horrible and at the same time they bring us moments that can be truly special - maybe the impact of tiny gestures and moments of shared experience is just bigger right now.

Enjoy them. Make them happen. Set up a video call with a group of people this weekend and open a bottle of wine (yes, one bottle each :D). You won't regret it.

I always wonder what would happen if there is no internet, no phones or no laptop at this time! Life would be hell inside four walls. Now we are connected more than normal times.

Yes, I'm afraid this pandemic will be more isolating in countries where a constant internet is not a given... Some are now claiming 'access to internet' should be a government job, as it's clear it's as important in these times as having access to water, but not every country has a decent government, so yeah - not sure what the right decision is here.

That is the only string - unbroken!

Imagine if it happens for real:

I thought US is far better than my country, India, in internet connectivity. Now after reading that article I have changed my mind. Government must ensure data connectivity, free of cost, like in India.

Hahah!

Same here.

I guess We Indians tend to think that way!

Everything is better than ours? 😅

I guess virtual concerts will pickup this entire year.

I really found it fascinating that one of the biggest event (WWE Wrestlemania) will not let audience into the arena anymore...

And instead, people should watch from home.

Crazy times definitely brings newer opportunities!

Set up a video call with a group of people this weekend and open a bottle of wine (yes, one bottle each :D).

Hehe! Looks like it is time! :)

Oh, I hadn't heard about WWE, that's very interesting, as they audience at these matches really are influential for the whole experience! All the cheering and clapping... Way different from a concert where the audience is supposed to be quiet for most of it.

Interesting to witness for sure :-) I also saw an opera that premiered online instead of in a concert hall. We might get some pretty decent content to watch from the couch the next few months :-)

Cheers!

I see.

And yes, WWE is shocking.

I can only imagine the business "impact" - millions of dollars lost.

And yes, watching Opera and other musical activities from home is going to be an ongoing experience - and one that will stay with many.

Personally, home time has helped me Hive more. And I love it.

i am not sure would i understand any of that but it would be interesting to see how they did it

They explained the problem, which was latency: 300 milliseconds or something if they would play on the same 'live stream' but were in different homes, and they solved it by playing through multiple streams while using a metronome?

As I have no knowledge about music this is the best I can re-tell it :D It did work though, they actually played 'together' and the music between them had no lag :-)

for my knowledge this sounds like a great achievement :D

What a great thing. Bravo to the band AND the watchers.

We do get some 'perks' of isolation. Bob Dylan's latest was released this morning and the whole world can listen. 17 minutes about the death of President Kennedy.

I almost never do video but did have a longish conversation with a friend about a friend's car. I'm the 'go to' mechanic for a few people. Even if it's by phone.

I'm really glad your friend visited. A 'special' time in a special time.

We are going to have a virtual dinner with some friends tonight. I might have to put the laptop on a swivel so that we can turn it to whoever is speaking :)

There's a first time for everything - let's hope it doesn't become the norm!

How was the virtual dinner @jdkennedy? Sounds lovely! And such a great way to keep up with your friendships <3

I do hope it doesn't become the norm indeed, but as long as we have to I hope we find very creative ways to stay connected :-)

The dinner went well, and we only had half of the dishes to clean later ;). Our friend had a list of questions for us to answer to keep the conversation lively (What quality do you bring to improve live while confined to your home?, for example).
One of our kids and his wife signed the papers for their first house yesterday and told us over FaceTime. We did a virtual tour using the online realtor listing’s photos. So far, everyone is well here, so it’s easier to make the best of it.

@porters here on behalf of @NaturalMedicine – I love the inventiveness! We had a virtual party in the Natural Medicine discord channel and it was so good to be able to socialize with folks from around the world! Actually we're making it a weekly thing - Fri 7 pm UTC

Virtual concerts sound cool....we are probably going to do that for the kids at the music school where I teach.
